If some of these fools leave, it might turn blue a lot faster.
Keep dreaming R1.
Mitt got 57.2 percent of the Texas vote to Obama's 41.4.
I will gladly sign to see those redneck egomaniacs start their own little facist country.
Who gets to vote?
I wonder why there are so many signatures from other states? Do they plan to move there?
Most of the signers are from outside Texas.
14 other states voted for Mitt Romney at a higher percentage than Texas. Texas is not the "reddest state in America" by FAR.
Rhetoric like this only serves to undercut the work we Texan democrats do every day to help make Texas a better place to live. There are truly more democrats than republicans here, but the myth that "democratic votes don't count in Texas" keep a good many people home away from the polls.
Generations of Texas democrats have been disenfranchised by this very powerful narrative that Texas can't change. Tell that to Ann Richards. It's time, and we're going to flip Texas.
Gladly. Don't let the door hit you in the Wranglers.
I have no problem with Texas leaving. Right after the rest of us steal it's oil.
With Latino/a growth, TX will become a blue state.
I wouldn't mind living in hill country. Not sure how long I would be able to handle it, but there are some nice things about it, mostly all those German smokehouses. Seriously good food.
Texas is not the "reddest state in America" by FAR.
No one here said it was.
Rhetoric like this only serves to undercut the work we Texan democrats do every day to help make Texas a better place to live.
How nice for you and your hard work.
There are truly more democrats than republicans here
Mitt = 57.2 percent, Obama = 41.4.
As a Native Texan Democrat I was very proud of the way we turned out at the polls, I doubt any election has garnered this percentage of Democratic voters since carter or maybe LBJ..
Before all you Marys go pushing Texas out of the country just remember: Kirker's going to have to live somewhere.
So what [italic] is [/italic] the "reddest state in America?? Anyone know? I'm betting it's down south or in the west/midwest. In other words, far away from the population centers that live in the real world.
Well, [italic]all[/italic] of the counties in Oklahoma, Utah, and Alaska voted for Romney. So the largest margin will be in one of these.
You're precisely correct, R20. Nate Silver mentioned those three states as the most Republican on 538 just the other day.
R20, don't forget West Virginia -- solidly red.
Wow. They're becoming America's renegade province of Quebec!
They don't speak English in Texas?
Can we let them go, then go in and conquer them since they won't have a military?
"While President Obama lost the state of Texas badly, he outpaced Gov. Mitt Romney in the state's four largest cities. "
r25, everyone in Texas owns guns. Texas is already a militia state.
Wow, there's a lot of blue in that electoral map. Yep, Texas is gonna be a blue state soon for sure.
Well Texas can return to its roots. Many people forget Texas was an independent nation for 10 years after Mexico lost it and before the USA got a hold of it.
I certainly won't miss the idiots there. btw no offense but haven't seen any hot southern white gays...southern black gays yes though.
Yeah, every county in Texas has exactly the same amount of people, R28.
R28 = Epic Moron
The nation would be better without red states
Good luck selling that to the over half of the state that is black or Latino.
R32 - I'm pretty sure that they'll do what they can to send the Latinos back to Mexico and kill off the blacks ir send them to Africa like they've always wanted to once they do try and secede. Don't they still drag black people by trucks in parts of Texas when they get all "uppity"? I found a lot of the native blacks in the Dallas area to be very slave-like in their thinking due to the right-wing culture there.
The jobs created from building a giant fence around Texas will be a boon for the economy!
Most of the signers are from outside Texas.
ROFFL!!! Clearly, we all want Texas and Texans gone! Nothing but useless trash, weeds, and oppressive heat in that garbage heap of a state.
Louisiana wants to secede as well
HA! Please do! In fact, take Alaska, the entire South (except Virginia), Utah, North & South Dakota, Kansas, Nebraska, ESPECIALLY Oklahoma, Indiana, DEFINITELY Arizona, Idaho, Montana, and your little dog too! Fucking disgusting trash states.
This country would have been so much better off had Lincoln just let the South break off, and they would have turned into a fucking Banana Republic for sure!
Small minded stupid people - like those in red states - need to be taught a hard lesson in evolution. They need to learn that people need to move FORWARD and progress, not be stuck in their small-minded mentality.
The year is 2012 - not 1812 - stupid fuckers. Catch up to the rest of us, or shut the fuck up and get left behind. That should be the Democratic Party platform for 2016. We should be way beyond the ridiculous arguments that the conservative right is keeping us locked in.
They are dead weight, and need to be treated as such.
I feel liberated and envigorated by Obama's victory.
In 2008, I was happy, but worried. Was it a fluke? What kind of President will he be?
This year, I feel like our country has taken a giant leap FORWARD, in reaffirming our commitment to Civil Rights, with all the gay marriage victories, and the Akin and Mourdoch defeats.
I feel like we are 2012, where we SHOULD be, and not 1940, where Republicans WANT us to be.
We have a two-term African American President, legalized gay marriage in four states, legalized marijuana in two states, and people just seem to be opening their minds.
I fucking love it!
Can you just imagine the progress we could make in this country if we got rid of the red states? If only...
How will I get my bike?
Oh please. Texas will not leave the US. And there are plenty of democrats in my state which is becoming younger and bluer every day.
R4, you're letting your bias get in the way of demographic trending fact. Texas already has Democratic majorities in its five largest cities (Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, Austin, El Paso) and the Hispanic population's growth outpaces all others. The only city without a huge African American population is Austin, and Austin has a long history of being far left of the rest of the South, and left of most of the USA. If the national Democratic poobahs were paying attention, they'd focus some effort on Texas immediately.
"Small minded stupid people"
Your thoughtful rant clearly sets you off from the states you attack, R39. All smart people know that those states are 100% Republican. Why can't they be more like 100% Democratic New York or gay marriage legalizing California?
Houston has a lesbian mayor, it's the third biggest art market in the US (after LA and NY of course) and it has my family. Texas isn't all bad!
This country would have been so much better off had Lincoln just let the South break off,
Right, R39, so they could keep all the blacks in slavery and so they won't move into your lily white neighborhood. Your racism is showing my friend.
(after LA and NY of course)
actually, I believe that that is Chicago
More than ten years ago Staten Islanders unanimously voted to secede from New York City. They're still waiting for their wishes to come true.
Where would they go, R48?
WE don't want them.
The State of New jersey
The vast majority of Texans don't want to secede. You have nutters everywhere - the Son of Sam and Paul Bernardo come to mind with New York and Canada, respectively.
I think the reddest state is Mississippi.
What can we do to help Texas become blue? I want its electoral votes.
"15 States including Texas have filed a petition to secede from the United States"
The more the merrier
Texas wants to secede so it can lobby for foreign aid.
Good riddance to bad rubbish. I hope they succeed and if they do, every last goddamn federal job in Texas should be eliminated. Let those assholes have their beloved private sector build their economy from scratch :P
The Texans are crapping themselves - they've called against a democratically elected president and demanded secession...
And all the wealthy states have finally turned round and said "Up yours. Bye-bye"
Arizona and Oklahoma next??
It would be really fun to watch Texas secede and become its own little Jesusltopia and watch them put immigration caps on redneck refugees from the rest of the country trying to get in.
Look at the county map of Texas and see how they voted. Every major city in Texas went to Obama. The whole border with Mexico went to Obama. Romney won the rest of the state by wider margins.
Over 18k signatures now. Only 6 thousand left.
Texas will make the 25k for sure.
[take] the entire South (except Virginia)
What about us?
Mississippi is not the reddest state, not by a long shot.
Of all all the deep south slave states, the GOP-DEM percentages were closest together in Mississippi.
According to KKKarl Rove, Mississippi was only one of two states that INCREASED its DEM tally in the election last week.
Not by much, but still, this is Mississippi we're discussing.
Go Mississippi! Go one witcha bad seff.
The idiot Governor of our state, Perry, is a open secessionist.
Give it back to Mexico!!
What does the 25,000 signatures do? Even if all the signatories were from Texas- which they're not- that's only 0.1% of the population of Texas. That's hardly a majority opinion. What, do they get it on the ballot next election?
The Supreme Court deemed unilateral succession unconstitutional after the Civil War anyway, so all this does is further prove these idiots have no idea how the government actually works.
Texas can stay! What about Dallas LGBT people? What about the Austin liberals? I don't want to need a passport to get to SXSW!
Crime would drop. Teenage pregnancies would drop. The welfare state would be gone. Let all the red states secede. Why didn't Lincoln just let them go?
It's not a red state-blue state thing; it's an urban-rural thing.
I would never vote or sign a petition for Texas to be allowed to secede. I like Texas and most of the people there too. It's a beautiful place with few real negatives. Yes the rethugs are in control of politics, but Texas will be a blue state in less than 5 years.
Texas deserves better from us at Datalounge.
R73 is right.
with few real negatives
That's an understatement
With such a large Latino population we can turn Texas blue. That should be what we focus on.
If Texas secedes, we won't have to send money to their military bases, we can tax their oil as imports, we can even save on social security (where they are net takers). Yes, it makes fiscal sense to let Texas go, as long as we deprive them of all nuclear arms first.
Texas is a big state and there is a lot of good democrats there, so no OP I'm not going to sign a petition for them to secede. Let the right wing scum put up with becoming a blue state, again, or they can find some fascist country they can bless with their presence.
Molly Ivins, Ann Richards, Janis Joplin and Joan Crawford are the only good things to ever come out of Texas.
And don't forget Mississippi actually voted down the "Personhood Amendment" last November. Go Mississippi indeed!
I wish all of the red states would secede. We'd all be a lot happier as two countries instead of one.
The entire notion is asinine. Plenty of dems live in red states, and conservatives in blue states. Are we supposed to start playing fruit basket turnover with the states we live in?
We don't want to kick out the idiots, we want to keep them so we can ridicule them forever.
Yes dems start moving out of red states.
Plenty of dems live in red states, and conservatives in blue states. Are we supposed to start playing fruit basket turnover with the states we live in?
Dems in red states are truly delusional. Blue states usually don't hinder the freedoms and choices of either dems or repubs. But red states have or try to have policies which hinder the freedoms and choices of both dems and repubs.
Your good hearts and intentions won't change the phobes living around you.
Dems in red states, wake up!!!
Since we go through this 'separation' issue every few years here in Canada we've got a few things to ponder for Texans or those who might like to secede from the USA.
What percentage of the US national debt will you as a new nation be responsible for? You don't just get to wander off without assuming your part of the debt.
What will you use for currency? It certainly won't be the US $.
What other countries do you think will recognize the new Texas or Mississippi or whatever?
What if the first nations and urban citizens refuse to leave with you?
Aboriginals have their own treaties with the government not with you.
They may put up a fight and kick your ass.
What about passports? You will definitely not be using the US one.
How long do you think it would take to have your new nation recognised to enable able one to travel or work inside or outside the now 49 United States with your Texas passport and assuming you could get a work visa or even a job?
Without the entire tax base of the USA supporting you do you expect a decrease or increase in taxation?
What compensation will you as a Texas taxpayer be willing to pay to companies that have assets in the New Texas and cannot move them out but demand restitution?
What incentives will you come up with to encourage multinationals and other foreign companies (which will now also include the good ol' USA) to keep their head offices and operations in your new country and where will you get the $$$$ they will demand.
The USA will of course also demand free access through Texas via the highway system, railways flight paths- they certainly aren't going to go around your borders. After all generations of Federal taxpayers paid for it. You don't just get to keep the infrastructure without paying for it.
... and the list goes on and on... lots of interesting things to think about.
I'm a flag-waving patriot until I dont get my way.
Have long wished for it.
A better idea, OP, is to help Texas turn Blue.
It wasn't that long ago that Texas WAS blue... at least it had a Democratic governor in Ann Richards (fabulous dame that she was).
Almost all the major cities went for Obama this year, along with most of the southern and border counties.
It's forecast that in 10-20 years, Texas will go blue anyway... but if we work at it, I'm sure we can get it to turn faster.
Best of all, all my cousins in Waco think getting a passport is for hippies and socialists. Win!
I agree with R1.
Good God, why not?
Good God, why not?
The differences between the states has become a major issue.
Some states want to allow people to openly carry guns, while some want to ban them completely.
Some states want to allow gay marriage (and all the Federal benefits) while some don't.
Some states want medical marijuana, or restrict abortion, or refuse to comply with the ACA.
Why not let each state just do what it wants, and if people want to move then we can see which states are better or worse?
Please sign the petition-
They don't want to be under the control of you any more than you want to be under the control of them.
Why can't we just split the country into smaller sections and get along?
