Not at all fucked. He still has the powerful job he had before, and the Republican right won't blame him for the loss. He'll be running in 2016 for sure.

He is in line to run again and will probably think the nomination is his due. But all the bullshit he laid down over the last few months will come back and bite him in his pale lily white ass.

It will be interesting to see if he carries on the same partisan way as before in his role as a congressman. I believe he will as long as the GOP continues to think it doesn't have to change its spots at all, which is what some hard-core conservatives are arguing. But if that changes, so will he if he wants to run again in 2016. And his hard-core fans won't like that.
Boy, he sure ditched Mitt, didn't he? He's a cold bastard and R8 is right, he's said some crazy shit. Didn't he just go all 'Obama 2nd term means the end of days!' at some recent fundie rally? Yeah, he's all about the fiscal issues.
If the Dems can find a way to take back the House during midterms, he'll lose a lot of his clout.

It's actually lucky for him that Romney kept him muzzled throughout the campaign, thereby leaving open the possibility that, had he been freer to express his views, the ticket might have prevailed. (This possibility seems to me remote as a matter of fact, but nonetheless one that Fox might pick up in coming weeks.)

He was exposed for the real douche/ tea partier he is. As Rachel commented, before the election, he was being primed for big things. Now he's a loser, and seems small - people got to see the real Ryan. Still think he's cute though- but in a dumb yell king kind of way.
I think he's really fucked. He'll remain a darling of the far right, but the far right is not enough anymore. The general public at large found him to be a joke after the Biden debate and his policies were already viewed as insane and nonsensical before that. What this election proved is the country's had enough. Even if it votes a Republican in again someday it will not be THESE Republicans. Paul Ryan is the furthest thing from the center imaginable, and comes off like an idiot child when asked to talk any real policy - clueless and scared. Americans don't vote in a scared wimp. He will remain adored by right wingers. But nationally? No, he's done.
Since he ran for his Congressional seat, it seems that he really didn't have faith in the Romney/Ryan ticket.
At the beginning of the primary season when possible running mates were being discussed, Ryan was dismissed by the msnbc pundits as being "unelectable" due to his extremely conservative views. Romney would have known that had he ever watched msnbc.
I think he comes off as quite unlikeable. People will remember him as also being paired with the unlikeable Romney. And he did not wash the dishes.
I hope he does run in 2016 we need another extremist right wing candidate. The WSJ today basically said they think he shot his load.

He's the Republican Party's idea of a Jersey Shore castmember. In 2016 Paul Ryan is as over as the Jersey Show is. The Republican Party will step up its game and present a PR media worthy (= fake and plastic) candidate who will avoid most of the mistakes Romney/Paul made by being briefed and prepped up by an excellent campaign staff which got handpicked by Rove and friends. That candidate will look and act appealing to the masses and [bold]not ruffle any feathers [/bold](like pissing off the women by publically trying to dismiss or diminish their rights - a stench that will follow Paul for the rest of his career) in public. The image will be carefully crafted and every threat that could tarnish that very image (like secret recordings) will be dealt with swiftly. By not offending the minorities while yet reaching out the base with Christian family friendly rethoric - always positive and never negative - none of the opposing groups will be able to manage to rile up the masses to vote against the Republican candidate. The voter fraud fix will take care of the rest.

r37, I don't think Rove had any say in who gets to deal with Romney/Paul on a day to day basis during the campaign. I think that was the main reason why the Republican Party lost in the first place. They went for a high profile businessman who wasn't going to take any marching orders from Rove and instead surrounds himself with brown nosed minions who say yes to everything Romney demands while being completly incompetent for the job. That's why I think the next candidate will be a nobody who will let Rove tell him what to do and say.
He's very young, by the standards of GOP nominees. With the exception of W, all of the modern GOP nominees have been either over 55, VP or previous VP, or both.
Thanks, R36. : ) I think I remember that now. But it's interesting that one has to go back almost 100 years to 1920 to find an example. So the fact remains that in MODERN history, being a losing V.P. nominee has been fatal. That's why I don't rate Ryan's chances as being very good.

I agree with the invaluable Poll Troll; Jack Kemp (rumored to have been bi and Ryan's patron) was a very electable seeming VP candidate for Bob Dole but got nowhere, for example. I remember the assholes on CNN talking of Palin as a viable presidential candidate into the fall of 2011, and she seemed to be flirting with trying. But now she's an embarrassing asterisk on the ass of the pig party. Dan Quayle even tried to run and got nowhere, though he had been part of a winning team for one term. People thought Lloyd Benson was very presidential but any ambitions he had evaporated quickly. However time is on Ryan's side; he's 42, and no one can know what will happen in twenty years if he stays in politics and erases this loss -- as a governor for example (as FDR did).
One note about Lloyd Bentsen though: even though he and Dukakis lost in 1988, when Bill Clinton won in 1992, he appointed Bentsen to his cabinet as a reward for winning the 1988 V.P. debate against Dan Quayle. And when it comes to Ryan, FDR may have gone on to become President after losing the Vice-Presidency, but as Lloyd Bentsen would say, Paul Ryan is no FDR.

He's OVAH! He was so toxic the campaign couldn't utilise him at all and he didn't even deliver his home state! Plus, he lost his debate to Biden! He brought nothing. No one will even win an Emmy for playing him in an HBO film! I think what you mean is, he's still a pretender to the throne, but in this game of thrones his capital has been spent. He's the PROBLEM with the GOP not the SOLUTION. The GOP is going to build up some shallow brown-skinned puppet like Rubio and still lose. It's going to take them a while to realise it's not about surfaces but core, foundational beliefs.
Sorry, he had his chance and he blew it. He never made that magical connection with the American Public that was necessary to turn him into a rock star, and the stakes are too high to give him a second shot. He can keep his seat forever and wind up Speaker of the House, although Cantor has the edge there, but that's as high as he goes.
Dan Quayle was nice but dim. Paul Ryan is ambitious, narcissistic, venal, cruel BUT DIM.
