I kinda suspected when I was volunteering for the 2008 Obama campaign.... When I was in the district office one day, total happenstance, Nate Silver was in town and stopped by the office with his "photographer," a really cute artsy blond twink.
Things that made me go hmmm
Love him. Love his nerdy brain.
I think he's a great role model for young gay guys. And yes, he and Mo Rocca would make a cute couple.
I don't know. That article says he's openly gay, but Nate has yet to confirm or deny his sexuality. Plus, he's not referred to under the subcategory of LGBT Journalists or anything on Wikipedia.
Just stop, R6.
Fuck you, R7. Only 1 single source refers to Nate Silver as being openly gay....even though he has yet to acknowledge in a public setting. I've been following the guy since 2008 so it's not like I'd miss him acknowledging the fact that he's gay (something that's been debated on DL for years). A free weekly paper is hardly a reputable source.
Andrew Sullivan "outed" him the other day.
He's too nellie for Mo - I know from personal experience that Mo Rocca likes muscle boys.
And before you ask - no, I've never fucked Mo - he's too nellie for me. But he's a friend of a friend and we've socialized together - he's brought his "dates" along and they are always Chelsea muscle boy types.
Go eat your mother's withered cunt, R8. Silver has been out for years, so stop your Republican denial bullshit. Do some research, fool, and read past issues of "Out" magazine. You'll see the admission when he was profiled there.
He was delightful on the Jon Stewart program (available online), but I didn't get a vibe - straight or gay.
He bounced in his seat
He used complete sentences
He began using stats on politics because lawmakers made online poker illegal
He wore a cheap gray suit
He allowed them to film him in profile -not a good look for him
No, fuck you, R8. Why are you trying to take Nate out of our ranks? He's gay, end of story. Do you think he would have allowed that to be printed in his interview if it weren't actually true?
The Village Voice has won 15 major journalistic awards since 1960. You wish you were as reputable as the Village Voice, dear.
He allowed them to film him in profile -not a good look for him
It most certainly is. He was positively adorable.
I'm no sartorial wonder,[R12], but he does dress very badly!
Fine. Nate Silver is openly gay even though he never, ever, ever, ever acknowledges it. I think he's cute and I respect his analysis, so I welcome him to "our ranks."
Anyway, I found this picture from Out and I'd offer it up as part of the reason I didn't know he was openly gay. He's pictured with Nick Denton (who's openly gay) and Jim Nelson (who's openly gay), but the Out 100 usually includes straight allies. They made it seem like Nate Silver was included because he had done a lot of work tracking the polling on gay marriage a few years ago.
Love Nate and the work he does but he should be mentioning the big wildcard in tracking votes: electronic machines. Counting votes accurately is the first proviso for legitimating his work, and we simply do not have standardized verifiable vote counting in the USA.
There's another manley hunky pollster out there who's good with numbers!
Is there anything more disgusting than Frank Lutz and his hair piece? Drown it!!
[R16] -- Rachel Maddow seems to go out of her way to avoid ever actually mentioning that she, herself, is gay; I suppose it's a "journalistic integrity" thing, but when the WA state resukts come in late on election night, I want to see her high-five with Steve Kornacki, and the rest of the gang give some sort of congrats.
Mo Rocca is disgusting looking.
Fuck you, R8.
Gay doesn't equal integrity, R20? Do Jewish journalists have the same problem? Black journalists? Is "gay" somehow different?
How does Nate make a living during non-election years? It seems like he'd only find work every 2 years.
I should've said "objectivity" instead.
Rachel Maddow seems to go out of her way to avoid ever actually mentioning that she, herself, is gay
Rachel mentions that she's gay as much as any other program host mentions that he or she is straight.
And Rachel actually does mention her partner's name, Susan, from time to time and that they live in western Massachusetts.
Once in a while, they'll have Jeff Zeleny of the New York Times on "Washington Week" as a panelist - the guy gets my 'Dar beeping pretty loud. (Gwen Ifill does, too, actually).
R20 is full of crap. Rachel Maddow ALWAYS mentions her partner. I couldn't pick the woman out of a lineup, but based on numerous mentions on Rachel's show, I know the partner is an artist named Susan.
I watch it often enough, and haven't heard her mention her private life much (except that she likes to watch football), although I suppose she must. Unlike Sharpton and racial stuff, she seems to go out of her way to avoid indicating anything "gay" as personal I guess is more my point.
J o P
No, r20 is right. I don't watch Rachel, but when I see her as I'm switching channels I haven't heard her mention her orientation.
Nate is another well known person for whom it's a surprise to a lot of people to learn he hadn't been known to be gay before. Of course he's not labeled as gay just as straight people aren't labeled as such, and he didn't need to be. It's just an obvious trait, as is a person's gender or race, with the exception that some cases are inconclusive from observation.
I'd suck his dick and swallow the gravy. I just wouldn't brag about it afterward.
Any shots of his feets?
I am sure Nate has a warm, moist, calculating anus
r16 you're on crack. Maddow has said "gay" in reference to herself more than any other anchor.
RIght out of college, she was featured in a lesbian magazine- in a shaved head with purple died hair, wearing a leather jacket as THE first openly gay American to win a Rhodes scholarship.
She mentions her partner Susan regularly on the air.
She talks about being gay and OUT in regularly interviews both in print and on air.
You're either being intentionally belligerent or you're dumb-fuck ignorant straight person who needs to sit down and STFU .
r37 was responding to r20. Sorry.
In any event this has nothing to with Nate Silver.
Rachel Maddow seems to go out of her way to avoid ever actually mentioning that she, herself, is gay
Uh, she's about as out as any gay person ever was. Always totally open about her sexual identity in interviews and whenever it's appropriate to mention.
What do you expect? That she'll begin every nightly broadcast with "Hello, America. I am a lesbian" ???!!?!?
I don't understand the mentality of R31, is Rachel supposed to go on and on about how she is gay while she is reporting the news?
She is openly gay, she mentions her partner when appropriate, what else is she supposed to say?
And they did do a segment with her and Steve Kornacki talking about the gay marriage votes and how this could be the first time that gay rights passes at the ballot box. They didn't emphasize their own sexuality, there is no need to they are both out, just thought it awesome to see two intelligent gay journalists discuss this.
Thanks for mentioning her discussion with Steve - exactly what I'd been hoping would have happened. Incredibly sorry I missed it.
If Rachel were any more out she'd have to begin every single sentence with, "As a lesbian..."
R40, I think R31 was making a joke aimed at R20.
I saw Nate on Bill Maher (sp!) and I didn't get a gay vibe, but I did get an autistic (if highly functioning) vibe. Nice to know he's family.
Rachel's discussed being a "gold-star lesbian" with Howard Stern, for fuck's sake.
If only Chris Hayes were gay!
Oh, no, Nate's computers are down. He's reportedly unable to calculate due to Sandy.
There are elections every year, and not just the even-numbered (presidential and midterms) ones. With odd-numbered years, there are gubernatorials in select states. For those preceding a leap year, Kentucky and Louisiana are applicable. For those following a leap year, they are applicable in New Jersey and Virginia.
The right's current attack on Nate Silver should tell you all you need to know about the TRUTH of which party's candidate is headed for a victory at the polls....
If only Chris Hayes were gay!
Well, we do have Steve Kornacki who is hotter, IMO. :)
They are REALLY going after Nate now.
Nate Silver is the ONE man who is screwing up the GOP's plan to confuse the polls and fix the game.
The more press he gets the more people realize that Gallup and Rasmussen are NOT the Authorities and in fact far from it.
The GOP can fix the votes if the can't make the Polls looks close ahead of time and Silver is the man who calls out the bullshit.
I would be seriously worried for my life if I were him.
Does he have bodyguards?
Toure' is married to woman.
Toure does not ping. You need an adjustment.
It's really odd that Steve Kornacki never raised my gaydar barometer, and he's openly gay, yet Toure, presumably straight and married, is more flamboyant and campy than Kornacki.
Toure does not ping. You need an adjustment.
This is a joke, right?
Kornacki I believe isn't particularly "stereotypical" in his interets; I got the impression he's a bit of a jock? I like Toure' as a person, but attractive, not to me. Not sure what I think of Mizz Cupp (as a host).
I mentioned Chris Hayes as he pings my weak 'Dar. So does that Ari Melman fellow who appears on the Ed Show with Krystal.
Then again, my heart goes pit-a-pat whenever the sexy John Heilemann is a guest on MSNBC.
I think John Heilemann is sexy too. Straight?
John is straight.
I know he is! But, he's my idea of H-O-T!
It's really odd that Steve Kornacki never raised my gaydar barometer, and he's openly gay, yet Toure, presumably straight and married, is more flamboyant and campy than Kornacki.
Not every gay dude "pings" and there are plenty of straight guys who have flamboyant mannerisms. We as gay people should know better.
"there are plenty of straight guys who have flamboyant mannerisms"
My ex and I used to refer to them as "F.S." (faggy straights)
Ari Melman never has make up on his neck, just his face. It's very distracting. He's such a cute Jewish boy, but straight I believe. The REAL crazy hottie is Mike Sachs on HuffPo Live. Adorable. I hope he is gay, even though at 49, I'm too old for him!
Nate's star is starting to fade. Even Politico is noting it.
I'm amazed I'm not the only one glued to these talking head shows!
Oh yeah, Mike Sacks is soooo hot...not. His herpes sore or wart or whatever that is needs to come off already.
That's like saying "even Drudge" moronic r66.
I'm shocked by the comment section at that Politico article. I was expecting a wave of wingnuts ranting about how Nate Silver (ideologically, he's a centrist like Obama; back in 2008 he had a spat with David Sirota because he felt Sirota was too hard on Obama failing to push a more progressive agenda) is a Marxist-Socialist-Commie-Fag that can't be trusted. But surprisingly there's some smart people posting there and the few wingnuts are getting knocked around a bit by the majority of the commentators.
First time I've ever seen that at Politico.
LOL Nate Silver will be VERY sad on election day with his bogus prediction
Will he, r71?
Or will it be you.
Only time will tell.
He's not fading. He's fighting the bullshit that the GOP desperately want to pass off as "Ro-momentum".
Thus he must be discredited, so sayeth Karl Rove.
Actually Nate Silver predicts a Mitt Romney win, indeed that happens in 27.1% of his current simulations.
Silver produces a statistical model and just tells people what the results of the model show, it isn't his "predictions" it is just math. Math based on intelligent modeling that has been very accurate in the past.
At least understand the first thing about what Silver and people like him (who have similar results, most of which are actually more favorable to Obama, do).
r74, might I inquire as to what you are smoking?
Obama will lose!!
Keep dreaming R76. Don't forget to come back here sniveling and whining when Obama wins.
And you know this.....how, r76......?
R74 is exactly right, R75. Nate Silver isn't making predictions - it's statistics. According to his model, Romney has a 27% chance of winning and Obama has a 73% chance of winning.
The writer at Politico doesn't get it at all.
Regarding pundits and predictions, a new study shows:
liberals were more likely than conservatives to predict correctly.
"Come to think of it, a lot of the odder critiques of Silver have been coming out of Politico. But that makes a kind of sense. Silver’s work poses a threat to more traditional — and, in particular, to more excitable — forms of political punditry and horse-race journalism."
R86, I too worry for him.
There are too many assholes willing to do whatever they deem necessary to ensure a more perfect republican dysfunctional union.
He's a threat to the polling dynasties
How is he a threat to them? He relies totally on their work. His model is based in large part on polls.
He definitely is a threat to pundits, though. Fine with me.
Did you know that Obama's national press secretary, Ben LaBolt, is gay?
Ben is very cute. I've had a crush on him for some time.
The thing is Nate's synapsis are so hopelessly autistic it can't occur to him that he is being hunted.
I've just read through this thread and am amazed. Nate is totally out (which isn't the same thing as wearing lots of rhinestones and dangly earrings). Andrew Sullivan has mentioned that the wolves are out for Nate partly because of his being gay.
He's one of those people who is hot in some pics and plain in others. But I'd SO do him. Now that he's moved to Brooklyn, I may invite him over for a drink, in fact.
He seems like the type of guy who's into Asian twinks.
As of last night the odds are 91% that he is gay.
2012 Poll Troll have you met Nate Silver or know his socially?
I'm a gay geek just like Nate. I have a bachelors and a masters in Math.
Any guys with a geek fetish out there?
Nate is cute. Autistic geeks are the best people!
So is Nate a top or a bottom?
So is Nate a top or a bottom?
I'm thinking oral-only.
[R99] -- Geeks/dorks/dweebs/nerds are a HUGE turn-on!!!
Nate seems to be weathering the right's 'outing' just fine.
Nate was on the talkshow following Jimmy Fallon last night and was just adorable. His clueless aspergers reactions to flattery added to the illusion that he doesn't wear strange hipster glasses anymore.
Yeah, r16. Maddow NEVER talks about being gay. Never.
Describing her Halloween costume on air last night, she said [italic]"Once again I'm a middle-aged lesbian pundit in a cheap jacket."[/italic] She was also wearing baggy ass jeans and Adidas with that cheap jacket. From the waist down she was pure downtown Butch.
The NY Times is giving Nate a hard time and the readers are rushing to his defense! (And none of them even mention his being a gay.)
R115 That "letter from Emma Gertlowitz" that Paul Rudnick wrote in the New Yorker is too good not to share:
See, I think that because you predicted the election with near-100% accuracy Matt Bomer is way more likely to go out with you than with Dick Morris, who predicted a Romney landslide, or with Karl Rove, who kept predicting that Ohio was still in play a week after the election was over. In fact, right now I bet that you could get anyone to go out with you just by saying something like “I predicted Florida, North Carolina, and Illinois, and now I’m predicting that you’ll have dinner with me.” I know that you can also predict the careers of baseball players and that you made a ton of money playing online poker, all of which makes you really cool because you can gamble and do sports without leaving your room; you’re like James Bond in saggy sweatpants whose pockets are filled with wadded-up Kleenex.
I know that you’re too old for me and that if we actually met you’d probably be really nice and say something like “I predict that someday you’ll meet a boy who’s 100% right for you,” and then I would tell you my secret, that I was totally crushing on this geeky anorexic goth boy but he turned out to be Ann Coulter. So maybe I should just keep fantasizing about you, because statisticians are the new sexy vampires, only even more pasty. I just hope that tonight I can dream that the next time you’re on “Rachel Maddow” you’ll look right into the camera and say, “I can predict that Hillary will win Nevada in 2016, and that Emma Gertlowitz will at least get wait-listed for Brown.”
How does Nate make a living during non-election years
Are you fucking kidding me? Google "Nate Silver baseball."
He also made a shitload of money playing online poker.
He also wrote a book which was like 1 or 2 on Amazon. He's a former KPMG analyst who decided to leave the corporate life. Can't say I blame him.
He also leases the FiveThirtyEight brand to NYT. It's been a huge driver of their web traffic during this election cycle, and the lease is up next year, and Nate's in a strong bargaining position at the moment. The guy is doing well for himself.
