Anyway, I found this picture from Out and I'd offer it up as part of the reason I didn't know he was openly gay. He's pictured with Nick Denton (who's openly gay) and Jim Nelson (who's openly gay), but the Out 100 usually includes straight allies. They made it seem like Nate Silver was included because he had done a lot of work tracking the polling on gay marriage a few years ago.

- Nate is another well known person for whom it's a surprise to a lot of people to learn he hadn't been known to be gay before. Of course he's not labeled as gay just as straight people aren't labeled as such, and he didn't need to be. It's just an obvious trait, as is a person's gender or race, with the exception that some cases are inconclusive from observation.
