11:28 PM, Oct 24, 2012 Indiana voters wondering who to vote for in the U.S. Senate race should have no doubts after Tuesday’s spectacular implosion on the abortion issue by Republican candidate Richard Mourdock. It is clear that the only rational choice for voters in this election is Democrat Joe Donnelly, U.S. representative from Indiana’s 2nd District. Richard Mourdock, the tea party extremist who ousted longtime U.S. Sen. Richard Lugar in the primary, exceeded extreme Tuesday when he offered the jaw-dropping statement in a debate that he opposes abortion even in the case of rape because “life is that gift from God.” In his words: “I think, even when life begins in that horrible situation of rape, that it is something God intended to happen.” (See the video of the comment.) Really? God intended that a woman be raped and become pregnant? Voters of Indiana, wake up! Especially women voters! Polls show the race to be a dead heat and people who support Mr. Mourdock need to understand exactly who they would be sending to Washington. Mr. Donnelly, a Roman Catholic, is no fan of abortion. But he appeared dumbfounded by Mr. Mourdock’s statement, saying after the debate his God would not do that and calling the comment “shocking.” Mr. Mourdock’s comments come in the wake of the now-infamous “legitimate rape” statement of GOP Senate candidate Todd Akin in Missouri that women somehow biologically avoid becoming pregnant by rape. These are the kinds of candidates people especially women do not need in the U.S. Senate. Their words speak for themselves.
