I don't know OP, I don't get it. I have a cousin like that. He's in his fifties but barely worked a day in his life, never married, never left home. He's had two girlfriends that anyone knows of, and one of those relationships ended with a restraining order against him. If anyone asks what he does he says war historian, and all that means is he can find a way to compare being treated badly by a waiter to the Tet Offensive or one of Napoleon's battles. In vino veritas. Get him drunk enough and he becomes a nazi. His late father, a WWII navy vet, would be mortified.
It's funny b/c before I knew this type existed I knew these guys who were practically soldier groupies. Running up to buy guys in uniforms beer or thank them for their service. They had patches and hats that were military themed. Play war games like Call of Duty and use jargon like "Say again." I just assumed they'd served. Nope, real military guys barely ever mention it. Unless they're douches.

War is meant to purge the country of the underclasses.
This is one of the defining characteristics of the republ party. They basically turn their own weaknesses into their strengths and perform the opposite on their opponents. (Remember 2004 when Bush, the deserter, was able to use Kerry's honorable military service against him.) It seems that the reason why they're able to continue to exist in the 21st century is that there are enough idiots who will vote for them in spite of what they are. It's like idiots voting for republs because of the economy. Like hiring Charles Manson as a babysitter because of what an affable guy he is.
r7 that reminds me of the great Homicide: LOTS episode where the detectives were in a bar, recounting their weird cases. Two guys got into a vicious fight about Vietnam, each insisting the other was a liar about being in active service. One ended up stabbing and killing the other guy. As they investigated the case, it turned out neither one was ever even there.

They are often closet gays. Usually they are also very poorly educated,or maybe have a TECHNICAL education, at least the ones I have met. They are fearful of a new society where they have little or no status, but people from other countries, often of other races, have more education, money and the upper middle class lifestyle they, the military wanna-bes, really want.They are backward looking, thinking the USA should be the way it was in the 1950s.
Those guys identify with the derring-do of the military in the same way sports fans wear the jerseys of the players at the top of the game. There is a lot more to the story, but they don't want to hear it -- they just want to identify with the "strong" and "talented."

Oh god, R25, that story is in my family. An ancestor named Sookie Feathers who was supposedly a Cherokee "princess". We aren't military nuts though. Supposedly related to William the Conqueror too. I don't believe any of it btw. Sookie was just an ordinary Indian woman who happened to marry guy dressed in a kilt and so many Americans lay claim to European royalty. I find it funny myself.

I believe, r26, that there are actually websites/blogs that deal with the "Cherokee princess syndrome"--I think one of the main reasons is to try and deflect some attention away from the the fact that she thinks of herself and thinks that others perceive her as being just another lowlife, trailor-trash bee-otch. This is what she thinks will make people go wide-eyed and will impress them. I think even the Cherokee Nation's website has something on it to refute these silly claims and outlines the forms of traditional Cherokee government to explain how and why they never had a royalist form of government in the European sense. I think it is also a misconception that Pocahontas was a "princess" of some sort as well but the English colonists seemed to think of her as such. People who make these claims are just soooo full of shit....

I once worked with one of these types who was way too young to have been in the army during the Vietnam War but who tried to pass himself off as a 'Nam vet. Others who heard his deranged bullshit agreed that the army must have been taking volunteers as young as 5 if he was being truthful.
