Jezebel (1938) starring Bette Davis & Henry Fonda

Every time I watch it, I think "This would've been so much better in Technicolor." Too bad La Davis didn't photograph well in Technicolor. But it's still a stunning film. William Wyler truly brought out the best in Bette Davis.

• I disagree about the Technicolor, especially at Warner Brothers in 1938. It would not have looked good at all. GONE WITH THE WIND was the first of the three strip Techniclor films that didn't have that garish look to it.

• I love Bette Davis, but I have to admit I've always found her costume dramas to be rather boring. I much prefer her films where she was playing a contemporary woman.

• you should check it out again, R3. Its a wonderfully realized performance that is also pretty modern. She does a take during one of her early scenes with Fonda that I swear Alicia Silverstone used in CLUELESS. The skirts were bigger and longer, but she's just as spoiled and greedy as any young TV Reality star except Julie is redeemed.

• R3, she did a good job playing ME.

• Bette,herself, said she was offered the chance to screen test for Gone With the Wind but she was in the midst of a battle with Jack Warner over her scripts (and lord knows whatever else since she ALWAYS seemed to be in a battle over something) and, not realizing what it really WAS, she supposedly said "I bet it's a pip!" and flounced out of the room. No matter, she had her day playing a southern belle. And quite well, too.

• She was great in Little Foxes playing a southerner in a period drama.

• But R1, you can't even tell that her dress is supposed to be red in the Olympus Ball scene! Bugs the shit out of me every single time.

• It's not a great film by any means, the only reason to watch is it to see a young Bette Davis coming into her own.

That's because it's mentioned at least once in the film before she attends the dance. Back then, people didn't need as many visual clues since they were smarter and listened.

• I love the scene where she leads the darkies in song!
