Murdoch Eyes Chicago Tribune and LA Times

The gutting of our national media continues: [quote]News Corp Chairman and CEO Rupert Murdoch is looking to buy the Los Angeles Times, one of the country's largest newspapers, from struggling media conglomerate Tribune Co, a source familiar with his plans told Reuters on Friday. [quote]Rupert Murdoch is also eyeing the Chicago Tribune, whose publisher Tribune Co is now trying to exit bankruptcy. News Corp executives are in early talks with Tribune Co debtholders, including hedge fund Oaktree Capital. The company wants to secure footholds in Los Angeles and Chicago, according to the Los Angeles Times, which first reported the news.

• I don't know but I think it would be pretty near the end for The Chicago Tribune...if Murdoch can get Chicagoans to buy his paper, I'll be surprised.

• The link says that's not true and NewsCorp says it's not true though, but I am willing to bet that RM wants them.

• He wants to take what newspapers are left in this country and turn them into The New York Post.

• Murdoch tried Chicago once before. He bought the Sun-Times back in the early 80's, changed it into a version of the Post, and only sold it because he was forced to get rid of it so he could buy a Chicago television station to get the Fox Network off the ground.

• Grasping at straws. Newspapers are over, and he's never been able to get a toehold in new media (viz. MySpace.) His empire in the UK is crumbling and the board of directors at News Corp. want him gone.

• Rupert will change the liberal editorial policy of the L.A. Times.

• Serious question - what percentage of Americans do you think know who Rupert Murdoch is? Not at a superficial "i know that name" way, but what he stands for, etc.

• Someone needs to take Murdoch out of the game. He is one of the biggest threats to American Democracy on the planet.
