• Sally Field isn't even on the Oscar pundits' radar. She's actually the only member of the cast who's not even on the shortlist. It's nice she has a gay son, but it certainly doesn't make her a good actress (proven by the fact that he was born decades after her best work). Maybe if HRC didn't have so many benefits they wouldn't have to scrape the bottom of the barrel and find spokeswomen to honor.

• The 1992 Oscar protest was misguided anyway. Hollywood was pretty good to the gays. Basic Instict and Silence of the Lambs hardly merited the outrage some people had for them.

• I went to college with her son Peter. I actually went to dinner with her..she took a large group of his friends out. She was very nice and interested in what all of Peter's friends were into. Obviously this was long before Sam was born. Peter is not gay...nice, normal guy...but not gay.

• Not if they had been balanced by positive portrayals, r40. Both Stone and Douglas agreed the complaint was valid in that context, while still defending the movie. Minorities have always been vilified by Hollywood, before they gained mainstream acceptance. Sally should've expressed some understanding of that instead of just dismissing the protests. But no one's perfect. I don't think she was ever homophobic.

• Not sure if Sally will really be an Oscar contender but it is hard to picture the Les Mis girls winning. Those roles are pretty slight and their songs are so cliched and overdone nowadays. If anybody shines in Les Miz it will probably Jackman or Crowe.
