• R51, Harper is not being given the option to allow anything. He is being told now. Abortion, Stem Cell and Gay Equality are all being discussed this year, whether Harper likes it or not. As anti-gay as Harper is, he is still a moderate compared to the rest of his party.

• All the fear-mongering that Canada is moving farthur to the right is from Americans who are clueless about the Canadian political system. The majority of Canada is not conservative, despite the Conservative Party winning the government with a majority. We have a parliamentary democracy with many political parties, the parties who win do not reflect the entire or even majority makeup of the country. There are currently 3 major left-leaning parties in Canada. The Liberal Party, The New Democrat Party(NDP) and the Green Party.(i'm leaving the Bloq-Quebecois out right now, even though technically they are left-leaning/moderate). So the left vote in Canada is split between 3 parties. Conversally, there is only 1 major right-leaning party in the country, so their vote isn't split. That is the only reason the Conservative won, and that they won a majority. If you were to look at the overall demographics of the percentage of Canadians voting for which type of parties, you would see that most Canadians are left-leaning. There isn't a giant right-wing faction in Canada, no matter what you want to believe. Most Canadians don't want to touch abortion rights, and gay rights.

• The population of Canada, largely due to massive immigration, is becoming far more socially conservative. Many of the school boards fighting against the "it gets better" campaign (from Surrey, to Durham, Ontario and Turro, Nova Scotia) are filled with immigrant parents. The New Conservative voter is more likely to be a recent immigrant from Asia or India.

• The factions fighting the It Gets Better campaign and the gsa alliances are actually a coalition of religious conservatives who are from many religions. Conservative Christians, conservative Muslims, conservative Jews. Look into it. In Ontario, they are also campaigning for the right to remove their children from classrooms when certain lessons come up (anything about gay rights/history, sex ed). And in particular in Ontario, it was the Christians who were leading the march to ban gsa's. So please don't start with this immigrant bullshit, religious crazies from all sides were involved in that push.

• The Burnaby Parents Voice leads the fight to overturn GSAs in BC. They are largely formed of recent Asian immigrants (see link), as were the 4 bus loads of campaigners against equal marriage, sent to Ottawa in 2006 (CTV News even mentioned the Chinese concentration among these anti-gay protestors). Political correctness is not something to hide behind and make excuses for, which is what you are doing.

• R102, he's not an intellectual powerhouse or Constitutional Law Professor like his father was, but yes, he is smart in many different ways. He has a B.A. in History, and a B. Ed., and was a teacher for many years. Then he became an M.P. 4 years ago. He is fluent in both English and French.

The media like him because he's photogenic and the name doesn't hurt. Whenever I've seen him interviewed, he's never been tested on hard, realpolitik questions that other MPs get. The interesting development today is McGuinty's resignation. Anyone have any ideas why? I had a fleeting thought of him running federally, but AFAIK, he's English only.

• No, McGuinty speaks French too (although obviously not as well as someone like Trudeau). I think McGuinity's departure as Ontario Premier is just coincidental. It's possible he could run for the Federal leadership, but I think he just realized it was time to move on since he had been elected 3 times and is down in the polls provincially. The Ontario Liberals need a new leader without all the baggage.

• Provincially I think Andrea Horwarth of the NDP is ahead in Ontario. People don't like the Tim Hudak Conservatives. As for Justin Trudeau, of course this resumé is thinner than his father's. His father was a Constitutional Law Professor and Minister of Justice. But he is very smart in other ways and very good at connecting with voters. And if he can inspire the type of enthusiasm that Pierre Trudeau did, or that Barack Obama and Jack Layton did, he can win.

They hated him and saw him as a traitor and was portrayed in cartoons as a rat. I could not believe they chose him as leader. And in the rest of Canada, he had too heavy an accent and no one could understand him. Harper will attack Justin as a lightweight with no experience. Our best hope is with Muclair.

• A cat or a hamster would be in second place in Quebec. They hate Harper. The point is - he is not in first place. Quebec support is needed to defeat Harper.

• Ontario support is needed to defeat Harper - it's the biggest province. And Justin is leading there.

• Ontario can't even be counted to vote Liberal. They voted 73 Conservatives in, 22 NDP, 11 Liberal in the last election. They should not pick someone that will "win" in Ontario, when they are really going to vote for Harper. All they will have is ANOTHER losing Candidate, and another election to Harper. We have to support the leader and party that will win in Quebec - Mulcair and the NDP.

• It's not as simple as that. Quebec had virtually no clout in the last election. Harper was able to get a Majority without Quebec, regardless of the fact that it voted mainly NDP. So if the Liberals can be first in Ontario, 2nd in Quebec, and competitive in the Maritimes, with a few in Western Canada, that's what's important. Remember also that no one with a beard has been elected Prime Minister in 100 years.

• Ontario is going to vote for Harper, so it is a waste to pick someone that will hypothetically "win" there - and lose in Quebec. Trudeau looks like a kid, and Harper will destroy him the way he destroyed Ignatieff - before even the election is called. The NDP was never official opposition before Jack, so forget about what happened 100 years ago. Different times require different methods. Maybe this time the method is a guy with a beard.

• Harper may not even be around by the time of the next election. And he is not going to destroy Justin. The Bloc Quebecois and NDP tried that in Quebec and they failed - TWICE.

• Liberals & NDP should form a coalition or Harper will reign forever and Canada will be completely ruined. Harper's party is a combination of Reform and Conservative. It's not the old Conservative Party. They got together to get the numbers to win. That is what the NDP and Liberals should be doing instead of thinking of their own egos.

• He is not going to destroy Justin? Who has very little experience, and who is young? He destroyed Ignatieff before the election was even called with all of those ads attacking him - that brainwashed people. Yes, Trudeau got elected in a riding, but leadership is another story. Harper will attack him, that is for sure.

He had spent half of his life outside of Canada and was very easy to attack as being American, a foreigner, just visiting etc. Opponents are easiest to attack when they are undefined and disliked. Justin will have vulnerabilities just like any other leader, but he has grown up in the public eye and is well known to Canadians. It will be much harder to attack him as being un-Canadian the way it was with Ignatieff. That's all I'm saying.

Remember also why Ignatieff was vulnerable - he was an elite, out of touch Professor who had spent more time outside of Canada than in it. People considered him more American than Canadian because of all the years he spent at Harvard. That won't be the case with Justin.
