Dogs whose barking drives you batshit crazy

I hate, hate the baying sound of hounds and other hunting dogs. Horrible when they all get going. I absolutely love Australian shepherds but when you get several together they are awful too. My stupid, trashy bitch of neighbor has 5 shepherds in her yard cooped up and they go nuts on a regular basis. They are working dogs meant for a farm and are bored as shit so I don't blame them.

• Dog barking isn't meant to be a pleasant sound. It's meant to get your attention fast. They're usually either trying to tell you something or make themselves heard by other dogs not in the immediate vicinity.

• R5, that's terrible. Just terrible. Ground glass causes vomiting of blood, bloody diarrhea, hemorrhage, and extreme agitation in the dogs. And if the glass isn't sufficiently pulverized the mouths get cut, prematurely showing your hand and leading to the trashy and/or inconsiderate owners to immediately call the police. The police then look for a neighbor, because ground glass is the sort of premeditated, worked-out method that indicates a particular profile. Much better is a combination of over-the-counter pain meds (I like the acetaminophen/sleep aid types) mixed with gopher bait and ground beef. It takes a while, which throws people off if anyone happened to see anything. Also, the fact that these dogs will vie for the "balls" means one is likely to have to be patient and reapply; two with the first treatment may be all that one will get. Lying low and being cool is crucial, because nowadays the once-respectable role of poisoner has undergone a change, and when animals are involved the splashback can be serious. Among our state Peace & Quiet Brigade (we have annual meetings), the long-time champion is a woman who had a problem with several neighbors letting their dogs loose late at night, all night (semi-rural area). Gopher bait straight was used (no need to be coy), and when she got up the next morning to get her paper, she counted 11 dead canines scattered up and down the road. The effect was spectacular, but as she had a lot of animals she was never suspected. The fact that the dogs had killed her rabbits and chickens was the trigger for her action, as it was, but she knew the first rules of our group: Be Nice, Be Quiet, and Be Thorough.

• Years ago when I was in college, I was in the same situation as r11. A guy who lived two houses down (total white trash loser) left his dog outside all night while he went to the bars to get hammered. Every single night. The dog barked non-stop and to this day, many years later, it was the loudest bark I have ever heard on a dog. You have no idea how annoying a barking dog is when you are trying to get to sleep because you have to get up early in the morning. One night, the barking stopped. And no barking the next night or the next. A while later, I heard that Mr. White Trash Drunk found his dog dead in the backyard. I am convinced a neighbor must have poisoned it, because the barking dog was the #1 topic of conversation among all the pissed-off, sleepless neighbors. I don't condone poisoning a dog, but I can understand how one of the neighbors would have been driven to do it. The barking was driving us all nuts.

• Unless you live in Bumfuck, the police aren't coming for barking dogs. Hell, even in Bumfuck the cops are probably too busy dealing with methheads and their crazy antics. The best solution is to stop being passive aggressive and simply go over to your neighbor and explain in a polite manner than the dogs' barking is causing too much stress.

• I live in a city that will fine you $100 if neighbors complain more than once about your dog. I think more cities should do this.

• r29 that can backfire though. There are a lot of anal retentive, annoying neighbors who will call over anything, just out of spite. Neighbor wars are lot more common than people think. My best friend is actually in this protracted drama with a new couple that's moved in. He thinks they're homophobic, they think he's racist. They leave shit in each other's lawns and scream at each other all the time. I tell my friend to calm down but that makes it worse LOL.

• I had a dog that barked once. (She accidentally got locked on the balcony when we went out.) I remember the neighbors as being very vocal and rude, and anonymous.

• This is a HUGE problem in Las Vegas. Lot sizes are ridiculously small, everyone's yard is walled-in which encourages people to leave their mongrels outside, everyone works odd hours (dogs left out until the sun comes up), and there is no sense of community which causes people to be inconsiderate of their neighbors. The result is neighborhood after neighborhood of dog zoos.
