Dustin Hoffman, David Letterman, Led Zeppelin among 2012 Kennedy Center honorees
The 2012 honorees, with comments from the Kennedy Center statement:
•Dustin Hoffman, winner of best actor Oscars for "Rain Man" in 1989 and "Kramer vs Kramer" in 1980, is "one of the most versatile and iconoclastic actors of this or any other generation."
•Buddy Guy, a Louisiana-born pioneer of the Chicago blues, "has been a tremendous influence on virtually everyone who has picked up a guitar in the last half century."
• David Letterman, the host of CBS' "Late Night with David Letterman," "is one of the most influential personalities in the history of television."
• Natalia Makarova, a Soviet-born prima ballerina, has a "profound artistry" that "has ignited the stages of the world's greatest ballet companies."
• Led Zeppelin transformed rock 'n' roll "with their lyricism and innovative song structures, infusing blues into the sound of rock and roll and laying the foundation for countless rock bands."
[quote] And still no Mary Tyler Moore, goddammit!
She hasn't done anything since 1982
hate Led Zeppelin
R5. MTM turned the world on with her smile and changed television forever. Give her a goddamn Kennedy Center Honor!
And they say Obama is gay.
R8 James L. Brooks and Carl Reiner who created and produced MTM Show (Brooks) and DVD Show (Reiner) deserve the Honor more than MTM
Those two should get it first, then Mare.
Robert Plant has said that he has no interest in performing hard rock music again but he may do it one last time for Mr. Obama.
The honorees don't perform for the President.
As long as it isn't Woody Allen.
Way to go, Buddy Guy! I love this.
This list SUCKS!!!!
I hate Hoffman. Talk about seeing the wheels turning. Click click click.
Dustin Hoffman & David Letterman don't deserve it. Just like Oprah a few years ago.
Who will present Dave? Regis? Paul? Too bad Larry "Bud" Melman is dead.
[quote] Who will present Dave?
Who's on this friggin haphazard, unqualified Kennedy Center committee?!
One African American.
and the rest are all white men.
lmao that cunt Letterman? He's an unfunny old cunt who should have been fired and removed off the air years ago. Why is he getting an award? For being a misogynistic pig? He should get an award once he finally leaves tv.
Here's the entire list of Kennedy Center Honorees since it started in 1978:
David Letterman? Seriously? I like him and all but a Kennedy Center Honors?
Dude, Letterman is an innovator. Don't forget about the MonkeyCam and Stupid Pet Tricks.
R27, you're kidding right?
I questioned David Letterman too, but then I looked at the list of recipients, and Johnny Carson received his KCH in 1993.
But Johnny was in a different class and represented an era when The Tonight Show was king. But anyway, awarding a talk show host has happened before Letterman.
Letterman absolutely deserves it.
Yes, r28, I was kidding. I hoped staring with the word "dude" was enough of a signal.
Fucking cocksucking committee. I ruined my knees during the nomination interviews.
Someone bring me a goddamn cocktail. NOW!
Well, this year's list is a 'Whole Lotta Nothin'.
To be fair, Jack Paar would have been honored as well if he did not retire so early. He was in the same league as Johnny Carson.
I do agree that the other selections are more exciting than Hoffmann and Letterman...too bad they were honored in the same year.
Buddy Guy is in for performing the blues and Page/Plant are in for stealing it.
BTW, to the people complaining about Letterman he was very, very ballsy and innovative in his time. He publicly supported many comedians and called out NBC suits well before the Conan debacle.
It's not something you'd notice now, as he's totally a corporate tool.
Why no Taylor Swift?
[quote] Letterman absolutely deserves it.
Other than hosting a late night talk show, what else has he done?
Yawn. Won't be watching this year...
The Led Zeppelin honor is kind of baffling.
They've never honored an entire group before, and one of their members is dead, which I thought went against the rules.
Why didn't they just honor the Beatles when at least three of them were alive? Instead of just Paul McCartney?
Yup sure Letterman deserves the award for making interns sleep with him or else they would lose their internship...let's see what else? Making sexist jokes about women. How funny...the only funny thing about Letterman is his face.
Who wrote the Kennedy Center statement? It should say that Dustin Hoffman is an "iconic actor." "Iconoclastic" is almost the opposite of what they were trying to say.
Maybe not, r42
I guess Soupy Sales wasn't available
I'll never stop insisting on Mary Tyler Moore.
Disappointed each year
This is the most boring group ever, particularly next to last year's group.
Back in the day, absolutely no one, ever, would do this on network television.
Letterman and Norm MacDonald after the latter was fired by Don Ohlmeyer.
Since when does the Kennedy Center honorees include non-Americans?
A while, r49. Julie Andrews, Paul McCartney, Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingo, etc.
Thanks R50. The only honorees I could recall were all Americans. That fact that it is open to the whole world of achievers makes some of the choices even odder.
THREE Beatles are still alive? Huh?
George Harrison died of cancer a few years ago, Lennon was murdered in front of his home The Dakota, so that leaves Ringo and McCartney.
How old are you, 12?
Another band The Who was honored a few years ago.
"Led Zeppelin transformed rock 'n' roll "with their lyricism and innovative song structures, infusing blues into the sound of rock and roll and laying the foundation for countless rock bands."
Hmm, I wonder if Jimmy Page will honor the guitarist he ripped off, the late British folkie Bert Jansch, by dedicating the award to him? I highly doubt it.
Led Zeppelin will never admit to ripping off black American bluesmen (Robert Johnson etc) and British folk guitarists, such as Jansch, who Paged ripped off note for note from Bert's arrangement of a traditional British folk song, "Black Waterside"! Page re-named this song "White Summer" when he was in The Yardbirds, then "Black Mountainside" on Zep's first LP!
Let's not forget the total rip off of American musician Jake Holmes own "Dazed and Confused"! Sure, Jake had a career writing for Streisand and others, but Zeppelin never gave him any profits from his song.
This song was performed live by Holmes, apparently this is how Page heard the song while on tour with The Yardbirds. IIRC, Holmes opened for them in NYC. The song was on Jake's LP years before Zep released their first LP.
How Zep consistently got away with ripping off musicians was beyond me. The opening of "Stairway to Heaven" is note for note taken from a song by a California band called Spirit!
Perhaps that's why Plant wants to remove himself from his musical past with Zep, the band ripped off so much! Plant's probably ashamed of his musical legacy!
Only Daltry and Towhsend, R 53
R52 reading comprehension isn't your strong suit, is it?
How is it funded?
Led Zeppelin? Bitches, please--did the surviving members horn heroin onstage whilst collecting their award? Did that whore Pamela Des Barres suck off Robert Plant behind the podium?
What a joke. Much like the Oscar and the Grammy, the Kennedy Center awards used to have some prestige until they started handing them out to total trash.
R48. You said it, where the hell is Burt Bacharach?
Burt's omission once again is particularly notable because Burt's music partner, Hal David, died this summer, so it could have been quite poignant and appropriate to honor Bacharach this year.
Bitches- Letterman and Led Zep deserve it. Get over it.
[quote] Letterman deserve it. Get over it.
R60 other than hosting a talk show, what else has Letterman done for his contribution to the arts?
Please, please, please have Ann Wilson sing 'The Immigrant Song'. Heart opened for Zeppelin on a long tour - Ann can sing the hell out of that catalog. Remember how Bettye LaVette sang the hell out of 'Love Reign O'er Me' when The Who was honored?
They usually go with a younger counterpart to present, so expect Jimmy Kimmel, Jimmy Fallon or even Conan O'Brien to present Letterman's. It will be a comedian of some sort.
r59, are you really that big an idiot? Burt Bacharach got the KC award in 2002.
[quote]Burt Bacharach got the KC award in 2002.
R65, You are the idiot. Bacharach has never recieved the award.
Kennedy Center Honor Recipients 2002
James Earl Jones
Why is it always 4 men and only 1 woman? (The Class of 2002 was an exception.)
Nance from Delray
I think the KC will only honor the three surviving members of LZ, and not John Bonham which strikes me as a bit unfair. They only honored Daltry and Townshend a few years back yet called them "The Who". Nothing for Moonie or Entwistle.
So how did LZ get honored before Mick and Keith? It boggles a bit.
Can you even imagine one year where they select 4 women and one man?
Even 3 women and 2 men seems unimaginable.
[quote]Led Zeppelin will never admit to ripping off black American bluesmen (Robert Johnson etc)
They did. They picked the wrong man to rip off, and they had to pay for it. Ironically, had they known the history of the music, they would never have ripped him off.
Willie Dixon got the credit he deserved, after he challenged it.
Dixon was a fascinating man; he would make a great bio-pic. He was a producer, performer and composer who produced amazing work considering the horrible racism of the day.
Three women were honored in 1989:
Claudette Colbert, Alexandra Danilova, Mary Martin
They are the most overplayed rock band
r72 and overrated.
Jimmy Page is a crappy guitarist. When I heard about "It Might Get Loud" I was happy until I saw the line-up.
