• Definitely Savannah. The center part of the city. It's a small area. But its charm is undeniable.

• I agree with R22. Pairing Atlanta with Dallas is like pairing Paris with Detroit. Atlanta is fabulous, fun, funky, and has one of the largest, most visible gay communities on earth. Dallas is just vapidity and cowboy hats. Two gorgeous Southern cities for those who love antiquing and splendid old homes: Madison GA and Columbus MS.

• Lexington KY is a good city with an openly gay mayor, surrounded by endless gorgeous horse farms.

• Savannah is a delight to visit - so romantic & gorgeous in the heart of town. But it's not such a great place to live.

• Ugliest, most horrible cities in the South: Spartanburg SC, Greenville SC, Birmingham AL, Shreveport LA, Augusta GA Surprisingly charming: Macon GA, Chattanooga TN, Tallahassee FL Most liberal southern cities: Chapel Hill NC, Atlanta, Gainesville FL, Asheville NC, Athens GA

• The best southern cities to visit are Asheville, NC; Charleston, SC; Savannah, GA. The only one you would want to live in is Asheville.

• How did you group your cities, OP? It is pure blasphemy to have Charleston and Savannah associated with each other. Native Charlestonians try to ignore the great pretender to the south.
