Present one. He probably has Asperger's or something. He is unable to change or improve anything. He keeps telling us how he's "been here 13 years!" and you just know nothing has changed since the first day he started (including cleaning; there is dust literally an inch thick in the corners). Will not take suggestions. Patronizes, browbeats and bellows. Just awful. Fires people on the spot.
But we're supposed to "be glad you got a job", in this nasty economy, like good little sheeple.
Nancy L. Buc. Big time FDA lawyer in DC. Now retired I think. She used throw staplers at the paralegals. Also used to double park in front of the building, leave it running, go up 5 floors to her office then tell a paralegal to park her car. Very successful, total bitch.
Mine was so gawdawful I still can't write about it 27 years later. (It would take pages.) Even when he finally died, I could take no joy in it, realizing he was now busily fucking up Hell.
Total alcoholic with rage problems. I'd have to come in and clean up his mess every day. He got mad about it and set me up to get canned.
Then again the same boss also gave a pass to one of my coworkers who missed his shift cause he called in sick...from jail after being picked up on DUI on the way into our work.
He protected horrible people around him and anyone who wasn't in his sick circle was marked.
Glad to be gone from that mess. Miss the salary and benefits but at least my workplace today is harmonious with great folks.
Fat Irishman at Columbia University. He used to cough in my face getting his germs and bad breath all over my face and hair. He could hardly mask his contempt for me.
Terminated me after 22 years and then 3 years later he had a heart attack while taking a shower and fell and cracked open his skull.
Bye, Jim. Your ass smelled too.
She was horrible. I joined the "work from home" project and ended up with this bitch as manager. She rarely answered my emails, messed up my schedules, did bad quality reports, etc. The work from home project was new and if things didn't go well the project would be cancelled. She faked reports, fudged this and that to keep the program going. She didn't bother managing the team of 20 agents because she knew most of them well and they scratched her back and she scratched their backs. The team was struggling constantly. Only three of us in the team, including me, kept it afloat with great stats. After three years, things got to a point where she left the project and got promoted for a newly created department. She was good friends with her manager (female). So she left and the whole work from home project was in tatters. Really awful manager. Beyond unprofessional and she got promoted. I didn't stay at the company after that fiasco.
He was the 20something son of the company president. Total spoiled brat and got everything handed to him. Blatant nepotism in action. He was also an alcoholic with a cocaine problem and many mornings was hungover/strung out and foul-tempered. Rage attacks like the above poster's boss. I left after a year because I couldn't stand working there anymore. About a year after that, the company was bought out and sonny boy, daddy, and most of the senior staff were fired by the new owners. That really made me smile when I heard it. It really couldn't have happened to a more deserving bunch of assholes, believe me.
I thought my worst boss was Satan but after reading this shit I think I working for Ghandi. And we're only eight replies in.
I worked for 4 1/2 months for a non-profit company that put together CLE (Continuing Legal Education) 1-2 day seminars for attorneys. It was through that experience that I realized non-profit companies are set up to benefit the President of the company only. Everyone else is grossly underpaid and works their butt off. I should have known something was wrong since no employee had been there longer than 6 months. I was hired for a minimal annual salary of $16,000 and immediately started working an average of 78 hours per week. There was no bonus for putting in those extra hours, but one time I needed an emergency root canal and had to take two hours off. Even though I put in over 70 hours that week, my boss figured my annual salary at a 40 hour work week and deducted 2 hours from my pay. He was the ultimate slave driver, I've never worked harder, ignored my personal life nor been as miserable. Four and a half months was all I could take, and I learned my lesson. I'd never work for another non-profit again.
My worst boss, an Art Director, was a closet case who was married to a woman. Meanwhile, she was was having an affair with her boss. To garner sympathy, my boss, who was such an ass, mentioned his wife's affair to anyone who would listen. IIRC, there were rumors she knew my boss was gay, she simply married him for his money. He made a high-six figure income and was also loaded from years of investing in real estate.
My psychotic boss, who seemed to have some major dirt on the CEO, who later committed suicide, was one of the most incompetent bosses I've ever had. The man basically did nothing, he'd sit in his office, smoking and reading fashion magazines all day!
His greatest accomplishment was copying the famous red on red ELLE cover, for one of 'his' layouts, this was his level of talent. I always wondered how these types would ever survive in the real word, after years of working in such a cloistered world where all the icompetents covered for each other.IIRC, he was there over 35 years when I left.
His yearly bonus was more than the two graphic designers combined salaries.
My boss was the type who would buddy up to his entire department, we were all his 'friends', sure we were! Of course, if anything went wrong, he immediately picked some innocent person to take the blame, even though he was the person who gave the intial directions to the assignments.
You couldn't trust this creep to back up anything. Many in the art department would have to verify design assignments with the other department heads we were doing the projects for, because we knew how our insane jerk boss would lie about everything.
I heard, the creep is still there, no one knows why because he now has the new CEOs equally incompetent wife as his new boss. She's the Creative Director who knows nothing about advertising, fashion or graphics!
It's wonder this company survives in this horrific economy, they do not produce a product most people buy, but they all walk around a sif they are Anna Wintour.
I'm sure there are illegal shenanigans keeping them afloat, because the people who survived the last purge are mostly department heads who also don't do much.
R11 I would love to know the name of that company, but I know you probably don't want to give it out.
Richard Benjamin. Thread closed.
Wow, these stories are cringe-inducing... It makes me feel marginally better about my job.
My worst boss was when I worked for this bank president. Sure I was kind of zany and crazy but he always yelled at me.
Well I finally quit and got a job at an employment agency and guess what, that's right this same guy was now RUNNING the employment agency. Only he changed his name.
I hate that.
Present one. Does nothing whatsover during the day but talk about her zumba classes and walk from desk to desk interrupting other people while they work. Asks for almost daily lists and reports containing the same information, since she can't hold onto or recall anything. Stares blankly and robotically repeats "yeah...yeah...yeah" when anyone is peaking to her. Cannot reply coherently when presented with workplace information; she starts waving her hands, saying, "okay, wait wait wait, slow down..." Makes the department put aside work to watch her rehearsals for meetings and presentations, since she's so nervous about them she's got to have even asides scripted. Delegates away one of her tiny handful of responsibilities at least once a week. Tops off everything with strange management-speak, learned in endless management trainings on which she has spent the entire department's budget for "professional development." And on top of it, is the sort of buck-toothed hausfrau that would make Donna Reed vomit.
One boss called me and a coworker into her office. She accused us of trying to "destroy" her. Crazy bitch.
Another boss made sure to be central to all processes and loved saying things like, "You'd all be screwed if I got hit by a bus! This whole company would go under without me!" We prayed for the arrival of that bus. Crazy bitch.
My current boss is my worse but I have never been lucky as far as bosses go. They have all been horrible.
I think I'm going to love this thread. I'm afraid to post because she surfs the net all day long and probably scans Datalounge.
She was a total cunt and her offenses are far too lengthy to go into.
To blow off steam, I used to pull pranks on her. I sneaked into her office and painted the prongs on her computer plug with clear nail polish and later watched with silent glee as the entire IT staff tried to figure out why it wouldn't power on, with cunt boss standing to the side looking perplexed and anxious.
Another time, I placed an open can of tuna fish inside the air register in her office and replaced the cover. She spent the entire day asking aloud "Where is that god awful smell coming from? Can you guys smell that?" By the end of the day, I think she was honestly questioning her own sanity.
In the summer, I started leaving slices of bologna in different places on the trunk of her car in the hot sun. I'd go out and remove them late in the afternoon, leaving discolored circles behind. She never did figure out what caused it. Yet she would remark on it all the time, finally deciding that it must've been aliens from outer space.
Totally affectless school administrator with a Napoleon Complex.
This cunt right here. Unprofessional. Habitual liar. Self absorbed. A horrible mother to her child. Would always cry the blues about not having enough money to pay bonuses or raises or health insurance as promised, then the next day will hand over a bag of bills to the local Teabaggers and GOP. As she cant get her fat ass out of bed before 10am, she would have her assistants take her kid to school (on the rare days she decided to send him that is). She would stumble into the office around noon, head straight for the restroom, emerge ten minutes later and never take off her sunglasses for the rest of the day. Yes, folks you read right, this is the fattest drug addict you will ever see.
I worked for this slob of a twat for two years. Nothing fills me with more pleasure than to catch the occasional local news item about them being sued (again) and in foreclosure.
My current boss is very bad. He literally insults people - in cruel and obvious though indirect ways - during our weekly conference calls.
I have never witnessed anything like this. He has an indirect way of speaking that makes it seem like you are a jerk if you react to it.
He does all the other psycho boss stuff, too. Very controlling, threatening and intimidating, petty and nitpicking, not above openly humiliating his team, steals his subordinates' ideas and accomplishments, always talks about how the entire dept needs development, turns other subordinates on the one that is currently "it." (People go along because they are afraid to cross him and having him focus on someone else is a breather.)
oh ... and he's a mean drunk, who believes that discussing his subordinates shortcomings is best done drunk. (completely shitfaced, btw.)
A complete narcissist - legend in his own mind. Just awful beyond imagining ... really, too many behaviors to catalog ..
If I thought about him more, I would despise him
I've had a few, one rises to the top for his complete and total lack of any sense of right or wrong. The guy has screwed over thousands with a smile and profited handsomely. He's the kind of guy that would make people work Christmas without a blink of the eye or any hesitation. He is the sleaziest piece of shit you will ever meet. Just talking to him would make your skin crawl.
I worked for a boutique executive search firm owned by a woman. Every day we had a meeting; never less than an hour, usually 1.5-2 hours; starting off as "Here's the new direction we're going in this week" and usually ending with her ranting and raving about how incompetent everyone was.
My first day I found out I had been hired to replace someone - who was fired that same afternoon. She owned several businesses and if memory serves, someone was fired at one of those businesses every week.
I finally quit when my paycheck bounced several times - I had to file a complaint with the state employment board to recover my wages, AND threaten to sue. Later on I heard that she was involuntarily committed to the psycho ward...she had disappeared for three days (not even her husband knew where she was) and had plundered her kids' trust funds for money to keep these businesses afloat.
I've never had much interaction with my boss. Actually, down through the years, I can say that of most of them.
Worked for a bank call center, about 25 people, while going to college. I was reprimanded for giving out information to someone who wasn't authorized, even though the account holder gave me permission on the same call. I was told I had to stay at my desk and not get up under any circumstances unless it was my break or lunch period. I couldn't do anything extra, such as read a book or magazine when I wasn't on a call. I also had to continue to meet my incentives quota by pushing products, yet I would not be eligible for incentive pay for a month and would have to have a daily coaching session with the assistant supervisor. I was infuriated at her, so I did what she asked, I sold the products but gave the sales to my fellow co-workers as I thought someone should at least benefit from it. She called me into her office a few weeks later after I gave feedback on one of the coaching sessions, which they asked for, informing her that this wasn't a classroom setting and I wasn't in grade school and I don't feel like being treated as a child. I was fired of course, and she asked if I needed to be escorted from the building. I told her no and I needed to get my stuff from my desk, a book, sunglasses, and car keys (I had cleaned out my desk months ago). She told me they would have to mail those items to me. I asked her how she expected me to get home w/no car keys. At that point the assistant supervisor stepped in and said she will get my items. The assistant supervisor apologized for all that went down. I was told not to come back into the building again after I was escorted out. I found out later that the bitch told the entire office that I chose to leave/quit that day instead of saying she fired me.
Two of my ex-bosses are pretty much tied for the title of "worst."
1) Was given her supervisory position only because her father had owned the company, but she was completely incompetent. Unfortunately, that didn't stop her from telling her subordinates how to do THEIR jobs, even though she had no real clue about that either.
2) This woman started out as my "friend" but then turned against me because of sexual jealousy, believe it or not. She (very inappropriately) confided in me that, while she had a handsome, rich husband and three beautiful children, she missed the "passion" of her brief first marriage. In other words, the ingrate was sexually frustrated, and it became an issue when she became jealous of me. She knew I was gay, and when she met a couple of young, male friends of mine who happened to be very good looking, she assumed I was having sex with all of them (as it happened, I wasn't), and this apparently drove her out of her mind. She made highly inappropriate comments to me, and eventually fired me for no good reason. I considered hiring a lawyer, but most of the time in cases like this the offending boss can always say the person was fired for other reasons. I've never figured out a way to take revenge on her without making myself feel worse and putting myself in danger, but honestly, if I heard that something terrible happened to her, I would feel she had it coming. P.S. I wasn't the only person she treated this way; she was also sexually jealous of a younger, very attractive woman who worked for us, but that young woman was smart enough to quit before she was fired.
An entitled Republican Asshole. And a liar and a shit stirrer.
I want more bad boss stories! Here's a short one from me - I was fired by my head boss, and then three months later my head boss was very publicly and shamefully fired from his job.
A San Francisco cliche but my boss, who had been my friend, developed quite the meth habit which made him paranoid at times and over the top sentimental at other times. When it got to the point where he accused me of stealing from him (after he had driven the rest of the staff out due to the same accusations) I gave him my notice and got another job on the other side of town. Five months later he wrote my mother a letter saying I had stolen from him and from a mutual friend of our's who had died from AIDS a few years prior. It was just so horrible and so unnecessary and even though it happened over 20 years ago it still to this day can give me the willies. Strangely enough he's still in business and alive which is the truly amazing thing.
My old boss, a gay man who was self-loathing, used to alawys fart. He even farted during a presentation in front of important people.
He was standing at the podium and he let out a fart that everyone heard. He went "Oops!" as everybody looked away, down at their cell-phones.
People were generally polite to him, but one analyst I could tell was irritated when he farted in front of him.
Sometimes he didn't shower either. I could smell him. He would also fall asleep at his desk.
R35, I bet that is really you, right?
You got me, R36. Too clever!
Oops! I farted
1. Used to yell at employees in the office to humiliate them, his accusations would make no sense. He considered this good management.
2. Hired a teenage girl as an assistant (he was 46) and then sexually assaulted her within the week. Found a girl who had a "rep", She had to settle out of court. Cost the company $350K.
3. Would claim ideas from employees were his own ideas because they were his employees.
4. Brought his sleazy hookers into the boardroom to meet clients. (sparkle shorts and leather boots types). We lost several clients over this.
5. Beat up his ex-white when she denied him seeing his daughter.
6. Stole money from female employees purses.
7. Told the staff they had to personally pay for the Xmas party and attend it or be fired.
8. Bought a new Mercedes with the payroll money and then entire company (40 employees) had to wait 4 extra days while accounting negotiated a loan to make payroll.
9. Harassed the best receptionist we ever had, making her quit after 3 days because she was Cantonese (He was Mandarin and hated the Cantonese).
10. Refused to pay any overtime and would often make people work all day and through the night and into the next day.
Just the top 10.
I have to add #11.... Sat in the lobby wearing a 3 piece suit and picked his nose while clients were arriving and going into the boardroom. The clients complained on several occasions.
A former boss who was a senior VP at my company was the nastiest bitch and I believe she suffered from genuine mental illness. Total harridan who would berate subordinates in front of the entire office for the tiniest of mistakes. Absolute screeching temper tantrums. She was beyond awful. She also dressed completely inappropriately for a professional environment. Short, short skirts, hooker heels, cleavage revealing tops etc. She also had a mane of long, bleached hair that almost went down to her ass. And she was no spring chicken, either. A couple of co-workers I was friends with outside of work and I called her "the old whore" behind her back. Honest to god, if you ever saw her walking down the street you would have thought she was a prostitute. We used to wonder if she was screwing one of the higher-ups because we could not for the life of us figure out how she was not fired for unprofessional conduct. She was such a bitch and I finally left that toxic work environment, and couldn't have been happier when I did.
Flash-forward to three years later: I'm reading the newspaper one morning and lo and behold the old whore got busted for stealing several hundred thousand dollars. I couldn't help feeling that karma had come around and bit her on the ass. I LOVED that she got arrested and thrown in the pokey!
There are pics of the old whore online, if anyone is interested.
R38 = used to work for the mafia
[quote]There are pics of the old whore online, if anyone is interested.
Like you even have to ask!!!!! Lets see 'em!
R41 = uncertain what the word Mandarin means.
I WANT PICS OF THE OLD WHORE!!!
Okay, here's the old whore in all her glory. She beat the prison rap (felony charges) by agreeing to do some bullshit probation thing. I know she looks like a drag queen but this really is her, hope the link works.
Isn't she just lovely?
She looks like a blonde Elvira, R46. Is that a wig? It looks like a wig.
R46 Is her hair on purpose?
Does she now spend her days rasslin' critters at the cee-ment pond, R40/R46?
The nightmare ones do love their meetings, R28. As did mine, the final straw that made me say "I WILL NOT WORK FOR WOMEN ANYMORE" (and I always keep "fuck you" money in the bank to insure I don't have to).
I work in the movie biz and did a lot overseas -- including for some very smart female execs along the way. They were European and cool, good notes, not a lot of games or mess. But then damn if my fellow Americans didn't start moving in and, in this case, took over a whole studio.
I already had some hits under my belt so was well established -- but then I signed on for a project with a very nice director. And the studio Development woman, an American transplant, was the single most stupid, silliest, clueless woman I could have ever imagined. Daily meetings where EVERYTHING in the story would change or, worse, she'd ask me to try it both ways which amounted to two completely different scripts. Nothing got done, two steps forward eight steps back, and everyone was miserable.
Then this bitch was so dumb that she wrote me a sweet email about how much she was enjoying this and looking forward to the next draft -- not realizing that she had stupidly attached another email she had sent to the new female writer replacing me! At that point, I called my agent and told her to get my money quick, then get me out of it.
Best news: I got my check, cashed it that minute, and ONE WEEK LATER this branch of a major US studio went under due to lack of hits and lack of money. howl, those American women destroyed it and no surprise to me. The movie died as well, of course.
P,S. This ugly inept woman is named Ellen and I pray she is out of the movie biz. But, if not and you find yourself sitting opposite her... run, don't walk. She has a fake upscale accent and can speak really bad phonetic German. A true cunt. And I've avoided them in my career ever since.
50 - are you male or female? I'm beginning to think the women with real leadership skills also display other positive traits that makes them attractive to potential mates, so they get married to well-connected guys who ALSO have good social skills. Once married, they raise their children as a stay at home mom and live off their husband's salary or consult part-time. It's just that most of the female managers who are awful are single, older with no children and usually no life outside of work.
What the gay hell kind of company was that, R38?
R50, what movies?! You can't come to DL and deny us this knowledge! Unless you had anything to do with PS I Love You, in which case go away now.
Jane Hewson, psychotic-untalented cunt. Owned small design agency in NYC.
Once sent receptionist into toilet to find me when a client called. Receptionist came in and told me so and so was on the phone, and said I needed to talk to them. I told her to put them on hold and I'll be out shortly.
The receptionist said, "But Jane wants you on the phone ASAP." To which I responded to the now scared out of her mind receptionist, "Tell her I'm in the middle of something here and will be out of here as soon as I can."
The cost of that shit? I was fired.
The only boss I have ever deservedly called a cunt.
You should have flung your feces at that bitch, R54.
More stories of horror and depravity, please!
Oh wow, this one is easy. I had a female store manager (40's, harsh makeup, thought she was God's gift to retail). Really HATED men. She took great pride in actually reducing grown men to tears. Acted and looked very much like Leona Helmsley. I'm 99% sure she was having an affair with our Merchandising manager (another Lesbian). She was also sweet on our cute but dumb as a brick 19 year old female receptionist
I remember another bad-bosses thread where someone recalled working for a fat old hag who walked around with one hand down her pants and unironically opined that she "exuded class."
Denise DiGiacomo. Hands down. 15 years later I cant even talk about it. She destroyed my self confidence. I have since learned she is a pathological liar, was fired and gained 50 pounds.
Suck it Denise!!!!!
Weird, my best bosses have all been women. Steady under pressure, highly competent, high-achieving and never talked about their kids or marriage much.
The men? Oi vey!
When my old boss left for a different company, Stephen lobbied everyone to support him to become the new boss. He made a lot of promises to his old friends. As soon as he became the boss, he drove away his best friend and made her quit. He denied all the conference and vacation request of his other friends.
He made each day of our lives unpredictable terror. He made special set of rule for me, such as no cellphone in the office, he has to know my whereabouts at all times, etc. Human resource was simply too lazy to do anything. I eventually followed all his old friends step and quit the job. That changed my whole career trajectory.
He eventually went for a higher up position and got canned very shortly.
I still believe Stephen deserves a special place in the hottest part of Hell.
Worst boss was flaky HR Manager of Not for Profit Org. a 60s feminist who didn't really like men. The gay staff all suspected she was a closeted lesbian as she only enjoyed the company of women and she adored the perky blonde girl in the unit.. Once she walked right passed me with a plate of fruit that she offered to the other women around me. I don't think she was deliberately ignoring me just that non important men didn't register with her. Made a huge fuss over one of the women whose mother had to go to hospital for a minor illness, ignored the fact that at the same time my mother was having a heart bypass!
She survived as long as she did by ignoring all the dysfunctions in the unit and the org. If you identified a problem management could address she would get a look of panic. Only liked it if you had strategies to ignore or get around problems. Name a problem and YOU were the problem!
She was only concerned with staying in her cushy job and being perceived as "lovely" to work with.
She was also extremely vague and forgetful as a result of weed!
You left out a category, OP, which is "moved on of their own accord"
It can't be said enough what a total shit of a human she is. She's even worse than both Gucciones (I worked for father and son at different times)and the NYT newsroom.
Loved to fire people and cancel health benefits that day without offering to extend to the end of the month.
She also looooooved to grind and come onto staffers of both sexes. We were forced to socialize w/each other, once hired it was presented as a no choice option.
Luckily for her, the booming economy sustained her and her psycho behavior, clients obviously didn't look to closely at the work delivered. Lots of stuff passed by her w/major typos.
Remind me to stay away from her new firm. the description sounds like such complete crap.
[quote]Remind me to stay away from her new firm. the description sounds like such complete crap.
It certainly does. It's one of those "coaching" companies which are a total waste of time and money. And I'm sure they charge a fortune for their bullshit "expertise."
Chuck Johnston. Bastard. I was adopting kids (older kids) and was having a lot of trouble. I had a high level job and was head of a department. Naturally, I wasn't my usual jubilant self, and to top it off my mom was dying of Alzheimers. Fucker fired me (with 10 weeks severence) because they couldn't rely on my judgement. Hey asshole, how about giving me a fucking break and let me survive what was going on in my personal life. I did nothing wrong at work, I just was doing the job, nothing over and above, like they were used to.
5 years later and I am still incensed when I think of it.
The worst boss I had was the owner of this amateurish ecommerce company that i worked for. He was incredibly cheap and refused to pay to have the offices cleaned. He was one of those sleazy used car salesman types.... and his breath reeked. He had no business sense and was dumbed down as a result of smoking too much pot. The place was like high school. Anyone with a significant degree of professional experience did not fit in.
I could write a book on how horrible this place was but suffice it to say that he fucked a whole lot of people over. He was even sued by a former employee.
Fortunately, I got laid off with severance and was able to go on unemployment. It was an amicable split and I was ecstatic to get the fuck outta there. I believe my departure went in my favor because I had evidence of the drug activity that went on in that office and I made it a point of letting my boss know that I had it.
I've had 3. All women.
I had a bad one for a while, but who knows? Maybe this boss wasn't so horrible.
At the end of the day, it's only my opinion.
I this him, r66? He looks like an asshole.
Bitch Hewson looks like a bitch, r54/64. There's something sinister in that smile.
She had an annoyingly small glass eye because her live-in boyfriend had knocked her eye out during an argument over him not marrying her. Her boyfriend lived off her and spent her money on his lovers. She still begged him to marry her. Finally he refused to have sex with her. When she threatened to throw him out, he bought a pistol with her money to ensure that he stayed. Loved to drink with her favorite employees and gossip about other employees. She openly had an affair with her supervisor, who was married. When he threw her away, too, she was devastated because he had told her that he was leaving his wife to marry her. Never had meetings because she made up different rules for different employees. Told a favorite employee that she had terminated another employee before terminating him. The terminated employee found out he had been terminated when a fellow co-worker expressed how sorry she was before he entered the building.
Mine sacrificed me to the goddess of feminism. But then a year after I was fired she shot herself in the head accidentally playing with a gun at a dinner party.
So, OP, you missed a poll choice...and then she died.
This is too good. I love this thread - sometimes I feel like I'm the only one that had horrible bosses. Wish I could come up with my own business ideas.
I love these stories...more, please. And I love that some of these bosses are being 'outed,' so to speak.
I posted about the old whore.
Two worst I ever had were both straight guys whose wives had just given birth to their second sons. I think this inspired them to a scared, panicked ambition which manifested in sleazy, egomaniacal ways.
The best I've had have been gay men, straight guys who'd been around a while professionally and had older kids and families, and women who played team sports.
A battle of loyalties flared in the [Disney Consumer Products] division, where some senior staff had qualified for bonuses in 2011 because of the unit's financial performance. Anne Gates, the chief financial officer of DCP, and Jessica Dunne, head of global product licensing, had run-ins with Mr Perlmutter that were observed by other staff. Ms Gates and Mr Perlmutter clashed over how she compiled financial reports. Mr Perlmutter wanted her to use Marvel's format for spreadsheets, say two people familiar with the matter. "She got verbally abused," says a person with knowledge of the encounter. Ms Dunne later filed a written complaint about Mr Perlmutter regarding a disagreement over an email she sent. Ms Dunne told colleagues she was frightened because Mr Perlmutter, in a rebuke, had allegedly said that he had a "bullet with [her] name on it", according to several people familiar with the matter. "Everyone encouraged her to file a complaint because she was genuinely concerned for her safety," says a former colleague. Ms Dunne declined to comment.
Vanity reigns supreme in Hollywood but Mr Perlmutter has always guarded his privacy assiduously. No public photographs exist of him and he spends most of the year at his home in Palm Beach, Florida. On a rare visit to Hollywood, for the 2008 premiere of Iron Man, he attended in disguise. "He walked right past me and I had no idea it was him," says one person who saw him that night. He can be just as obsessive about saving money - even on stationery. "He used to do this thing in our office that people would laugh at," Avi Arad, a movie producer and longtime associate of Mr Perlmutter, told the FT in 2009, shortly after Disney's purchase of Marvel. "If there was some used paper or a memo lying around he would rip it into eight pieces and he would have a new memo pad." Mr Perlmutter's ability to gain a big bang for each buck appealed to Disney. "One of the main reasons Disney bought Marvel was because it could make a great looking movie for a fraction of the price of a Jerry Bruckheimer movie," says one industry executive, referring to the Pirates of the Caribbean producer who has had a long-term relationship with Disney.
But two of the best were also women - go figure.
This last cunt was a micro-managing cunt of the first order. Actually bitched at one of the admins for taking off for her FATHER'S FUNERAL. If you can fucking believe that bullshit.
At least three other managers and numerous staffers went to HR about her bullying but they, of course, did nothing.
She had been her her previous assignment only 9 months for the same reason. Before that, she had lasted only 3 months.
I'm really surprised someone hasn't killed her by now. Seriously.
earlier this year i left my job because of a toxic boss
i am happy that i have a great new boss
and sad that i left because i swore never to leave a job because of a bully boss
my former coworkers still suffer under him
Paul works in a casino in las vegas
he uses dirty tricks and methods on his staff but ends up smelling like a Rose
my group made a lot of money for the casino
he used the budget funds and expenses to treat himself and a couple of flunkies to drink at bars and party and eat week after week
he bullied harassed and intimidated us
he promised a raise and a bonus but never came through
then he threatened my pay as low as it was
i finally had enough and reported him to hr
he had a friend in hr that informed him who reported him each time
he had been to hr so frequently
that he always had a plan to get out of trouble
he was insecure mean spiteful and arrogant
he would fool his bosses and peers by being nice and by using our work and revenue to make him look good
his turnover rate was high but no one above him seemed to notice
as far as i know he still works there
R66, I hope you got your kids!
R58, the job descriptions at your link all sound like a bunch of gobbledy-gook. Which usually translates as bullshit, LIL!
Second job after college, a menopausal woman "E." with marriage and personal hygiene issues. E. was unattractive, with huge plaque-stained, yellow incisors, and married with a 6-year old. The father had been laid off and refused to look for another job, and E. resented that deeply because she would have preferred to be the one at home raising the kid. Every lunchtime E. would call her husband with her office door open and end up screaming at him at top volume, later taking her ire out on us. E.'s daughter had some problem where she refused to go to the restroom and would soil herself in the classroom even though her peers ridiculed her for it. E. got all the city dailies and weekend editions delivered to her office, and they were never read and piled up on her office floor over months, providing roach condos as no one was allowed to disturb the stacks. The second most senior woman in the department. S. had repeatedly tried to move into other roles in the large media company but had had no luck; she eventually found out that E. would sabotage her with uncomplimentary phone calls to the prospective new boss to avoid the hassle of having to hire a new staffer on short notice. The next time S. applied for a new job in the company she went over E.'s head and asked for a recommendation from the division head, and she was successfully hired on the same day I landed my third job, so E. had to deal with finding two new people and covering for us until that happened. It was awesome.
Would any of you work for my boss? An example of life working for this arsehole are as follows:-
- No pay rise for 7 years.
Not only that for a couple of years he didn't even have the common courtesy to tell us there would be no pay rise or the reasons for the lack of pay rise. He would just ignore the situation. The last couple of years he has had the junior manager to do his 'dirty work'. We were told on Tuesday and he disappeared from the office for the rest of the day and all of the next day.
- There used to be a bonus system (introduced by said boss's business partner). It meant that if you reached your target billing you would receive a bonus. When myself and colleagues started hitting the target frequently he stopped the bonus system without telling us or giving a reason. Just like that with no word.
- He will often go to a member of staff's office or desk about 10 minutes before their lunch break is due to discuss something urgent that could not wait. He would keep the discussion up eating well into the staff member's lunch break and not even acknowledge that it was lunch time. Btw these matters are rarely urgent.
- He knows when staff are due to go on holiday and he will bug them about 'urgent' work which must be done before they leave, or give them a new matter/case with lots to do before they go.
I will give you a personal example I was due to go to Amsterdam on a short city break for a few days. He insisted that I go to Court the first day of my holiday to have a document lodged just because he thought he could get the Court fee cheaper. That day I was due to be flying. He insisted I go and he did not check with me where I was flying from or the time of my flight. In fact he wouldn't have cared if I had missed my flight. As it happens I didn't miss it as I was flying in the afternoon and was able to do the court job in the morning. Btw he would not let me claim the half (morning) holiday back.
- A colleague overheard a discussion between said arsehole boss and a junior manager. The junior manager informed said boss that members of staff at our other office had been working Saturdays off their own back to clear the backlog of work. His response was not to appreciate the staff for their extra efforts but instead his comment was 'Well why aren't we making any extra money then?'
- Staff get 20 paid sick days a year. If you go sick he will get junior manager to interogate you on your return. People are often sick and feel compelled to work on. No one really takes sick time.
All new members of staff, one's who have started here in the last five years receive no sick pay at all.
- He often tells staff face to face, but for no one else to hear, that they should be working bank holidays because their work load is so heavy.
- I only take a few days holiday at a time, like maybe a long weekend just because it's too much hassel to take longer. I always keep my mobile phone switched off when I have a day of work otherwise he will just get a colleague to call you up about something. One of my colleague took a weeks holiday and he had her secretary and other memebers of staff to call her at least a couple of time a day. Of course he would never be the one to call.
The last holiday I had that was quality time was during the Royal wedding. We had Easter Bank Holidays and an extra day off for the wedding plus May day so I was able to take more time. When I returned my boss told me that 'I should not be taking any days off at all'
Maybe some of you are thinking that you should be grateful to have a job, but we are well qualified people who are very good at what we do. Also we know how much we are billing and that the company is doing really well.
Needless to say I am on the look out for another job and am also added to my CV with an evening class.
Any suggestions how to deal with this boss? More importantly would any of you put up with this idiot as a boss?
I worked for this pyschotic bitch who would rave about being "mad at the dirt" whenever I cleaned the floors. Her daughter was a spoiled little bitch, too.
The worst boss I ever had. He was manic depressive and deeply closeted. Not a good combination. We worked out of an apartment, there were four of us. He lived in the apartment upstairs. My office was the kitchen when I started. In the winter months when it was cold, he would turn the oven on high and open the oven door. There I sat roasting like a turkey. When I interviewed he made fun of my degree saying "oh they give degrees in that now?" so I was shocked when I got the job.
There were often work events we went to and he was manic at them. He would bark commands at me and them grab me and pull me off to another task and then five minutes later yell at me for not doing the first thing he asked, forgetting he pulled me off it.
When we partnered with other firms he would watch other people belittle us and say nothing. Once we were at an event and someone from another firm was holding materials for the event. She looked at me and said "why am I holding these, that is what you are for" and threw them down at my feet. My boss just looked at me and said "pick them up."
He had serious rage issues. Once while yelling at a co-worker he threw a stapler at his head, not a small stapler, one that could have really hurt him. It lodged in the wall it was thrown so hard. He did not miss a beat and said "next time I won't miss."
He made me stay late during the holidays for a project I was not even working on because he was way behind and the person working on it had left for the holidays. I had no time to get a gift for my mother so at lunch I ran out and got a giant box of Godiva. As we were working late he took the box of my desk opened it and proceeded to eat almost all of them at a frantic pace. I was in the other room for a minute when this happened I walked in and shouted "those were my chirstmas gift for my mother!" His face covered in chocolate, his mouth still full, he said "I will give you 20 bucks, what a shitty gift anyways."
The most terrible moment was when he conducted a staff meeting from his bathroom while he took a dump. He propped the door open with his foot and demanded we sit where he could see us. He acted like this was normal behavior. When I would tell people what went on at work, they would laugh thinking I was making stuff up.
The worst boss I ever had was actually a pretty nice guy overall, but a really bad supervisor. The guy had to suffer from Adult Attention Disorder. In almost 3 years there was never a mention of a pay increase. It was just ignored. I never even saw a job description. My job literally changed every few weeks, sometimes I was not even told he changed my duties until after-the -fact.
The boss would just decide he wanted to go fishing with his kids, and not show up for a week or so. He would not show up and not tell anyone he would not be in the office. I would schedule trade show appointments for him (as I was told) only to find out he was not going to attend
I am a very organized person and would email him all upcoming events, payments etc only to be told to NOT email him but instead tell him in person. (How do you do that when you never know if/when the person is in the office?) I suspect he wanted me to only tell him as then there was no record of our conversation.
He used to accuse me of misplacing trade show materials, only to find them in his car trunk or garage at home. I would try to implement a way to keep track of items or supplies but was told it was not necessary.
I would request payment for a vendor only to have him lose the request. It was typical to have to request the pymnt request THREE times before he would pay it.
Evey few weeks he would come up with these grand ideas on how to improve the business, but never had a clue on how to implement it. My favorite was when he contracted a deal with a major national vendor which required having about 40 employees across the country. We did not have any of the 40 hired and we were already telling the client we were ready to handle their accounts!
Due to vacations/illness I volunteered to answer the switchboard. I had to turn away local business because there was no one to
contact the customer.
Her name was Shirley. She was a skinny crazy bitch with hair so frosted you might mistake her for bigfoot.
The setting is a rural Midwest hospital laboratory. Demanding place to work because we all shared call nights, In retrospect I think she was likely bipolar. She never directly gave directions, told us what to do or offer any other directions. However, she would leave each of us notes when we were away from our work area about what we were to be accomplishing. You would return from lunch or the bathroom and find the notes.
I didn't take the poll because none of the answers apply. I left of my own volition after a year.
In my experience bad bosses and bad staff attract each other.
Forming their own little dysfunctional community.
A symbiotic toxic relationship.
The staff can't perform because of the boss.
The boss can't perform because of the staff.
There is a never ending string of employees who get hired and leave as soon as they figure out what is going on.
In short for every bad boss there are staff spending more time watching what co-workers eat for breakfast than doing their jobs.
Well in my experience, bad bosses and toxic work environments are symptoms of some larger, ongoing problem like fraud or embezzlement. The negativity is an intentional ploy to discourage intelligent folk from moving up and ratting out thieves.
First job I had in Boston, 1974. I was a busboy in something called the Deli Master. Worked one day with a pleasant manager and other busboys. The second day I was clearing a table and I heard woman's voice (strident) say behind me "Not in there!" I turned and saw the NY bitch from Hell. "I"m the boss!" she announced. Later I saw her interrupt dishwashers on break: "I don't pay you to drink coffee 'Chi-nee'!" Unbelievable. That second day was my last day.
She is probably dead. Good.
In a more recent Job - I got hired to work for a company as an Senior Level Staff member. The Director I interviewed with told me that he was formerly in charge of the site but that I would be reporting to a manager in another state (red flag when someone tells you they used to be in charge during the interview!). I didn't think much of it, part of the reason I was interviewing was this was much closer to my home and I was working downtown and the parking alone was killing me in costs. so when offered I took the job.
Part of the attraction was we were allowed to work from home as much as we liked. As long as the work was being done. I went in everyday for a month to get acclimated and my other Senior Staff members all worked out a work from home schedule that was beneficial for all of us giving each of us about three days a week at home. Mind you this was a salary position that required off hours and weekend work at times.
So - the day I show up first day, they tell me they are moving buildings. Not just moving building but moving from where they are to 45 minutes across town. I was very up front and honest in my interviews telling HR, the Director I interviewed with and the CIO I had to interview with part of the attraction was that it was so close to my home and loathed driving so far to work (downtown was closer than where they were moving).
No one ever mentioned this. I was livid but what could I do I took the job so I stuck it out.
Now on to the director. We were still in the old location when I started working from home. That was when it started. Everyday I worked from home like clock work, this person would IM me and give me a task that had nothing to do with my job and he wanted a report at 5 p.m. The first task he gave me I was totally confused, I asked him was there not someone who could get him this information and he told me he wanted me to do it. I got it rather quickly and emailed him the info and he replied back, call me at 5 p.m. to discuss. The next time I was in the office I asked a co-worked "does he assign you things to do that have nothing to do with your job?" I was told this was his way of making sure you were working when you worked from home. Everytime I worked from home this would happen like clockwork. He would pop up on IM, assign me a meaningless task and want a report at 5.
I called my boss and told him and he just laughed and said "oh that is just XXXX." I told him it was keeping me from doing my actual job and since I did not report to him, I was not going to do what he asked. That got an odd response. My boss told me not to insult him and to just do it to keep him off his back. I told my boss again, that my work was suffering because I was forced to do things that had nothing to do with me to satisfy this person's need to know I am working from home. My boss said "you do what you need to do." So I did. The next time I got my IM I told XXXX, I don't have time for this, I have a deadline and if you don't like it please take it up with my boss.
That ended the harrassment, or so I thought. He began to undermine me at work. When we were in staff meeting he would ask other director's what they thought of my work and when they said I was doing a good job he would say I disagree. This went on for a week until again, I looked him right in the eye and said "XXXX I don't report to you, I don't work for you, I don't have anything to do with you or your group. You have solisted feedback on me in public and it has been positive, yet you continue to harrass me. If this happens again I will be forced to go to HR."
Again that appeared to shut him up. For a week or so. I got a call at my desk about a week later from a recruiter. At this point I wanted out. I was tired of him and was getting no support from management to get him off my back. I told the recruiter that yes I was interested in another opportunity. He began to describe the company and the position. I stopped him and asked if this was at XXXX. He said "yes, how did you know?" I told him "because that is my job."
part 2 -
so I aske the recruiter if XXXX is the hiring manger and he says yes. The bastard was activly recruiting for my job.
Then came the move. We moved to a new building and senior staff were required to be there all weekend. I arrived at the old building at 6 a.m. like I was told to. I was the only one there for 1.5 hours. XXXX shows up and tells me that they are all at breakfast and I had to let in the electrician and the consultant who was going to powerdown our storage safely. The electrician shows up first while XXXX is there and he walks him to our Data Center. He is about to cut the power when I tell XXXX the storage has not been safely powered down yet. He tells me that it has it's own circut and it will be fine. Electrician cuts the power. Whole DC goes dark, storage and all. Cosultant shows up and freaks out. XXXX just leaves and goes to breakfast.
New place, we have to install all the servers, the network and fiber all into the new DC. XXXX was in charge of all the logistics, the racks, the power and the cooling. He ordered the wrong sized racks, had insufcient power for the amount of servers we had and the "Chiller" for the datacenter (what keeps it cold so the servers do not overheat) was broke. This was Saturday night, mind you we had to be ready for business monday morning.
It was a nightmare - I was there from friday morning at 6 a.m. to monday night. He screwed everything up so bad, everything he was supposed to be incharge of. I put my notice in that week. Gave them one week notice. I did not have a new job to go to either, it was that bad.
My worse boss was a terrible manager. He was a hard worker but was clueless as to the business he was in. He was also technically challenged. He smoked a lot of pot so I think that might have clouded his judgment. He hired a number of lazy millenials. I think he did this because they had no college education but were all technically savvy so he paid them very little. I was the only one in the office with experience and an education.
My boss ended up bonding with the millenials. He'd go out partying with them, would hook them up with pot. I couldn't understand as my boss was in his 50s. I suspect he was in a state of stunted adolescence. As soon as I had a riff with the millenials, my boss turned on me. I was written up for everything under the sun. I was forced to change my hours and switch desks with one of the millenials so that my boss could "keep his eye on me". The irony was that I did my job and I did it well. The millenials were the ones that were outside smoking as soon as the boss left. He just didn't understand that they weren't looking out for his company. They played him. I tried to warn him but he refused to listen.
Eventually, I was "laid off" but I at least got severance and I was more relieved than anything. My boss called me over a year later and asked me to come back and work for him. He apologized for the way things went down. Turns out the millenials fucked him over. It was nice to finally get that closure. Fortunately, I was not desperate where I had to accept his offer. While the millenials are the ones who made my life hell at that place, I did go to my boss and tell him what was going on and he refused to listen. Instead he turned on me. I wasn't the only one either...there were other people that came (and left) who tried to warn him. Ultimately, I blame my boss for just not being a good manager. He's not a bad guy, just cheap, not business savvy and easily manipulated.
I went to college long enough ago that the hourly wage was $1.00. I worked in the evenings at a "Maid Rite". When you went to the bathroom the woman supervisor would fallow you to the john and pound on the door if you were in there to long. She mad sure you earned that big old dollar
I've had a few but the last nasty boss I had, I seriously wised him dead and he was a young man.
I know he's gone on to other locations, causing serious unhappiness where ever he goes.
R98, isn't that where loose meat sandwiches come from?
My worst boss was a gay man who was one of these people who focused so much on moving up the company ladder quicky that he never bothered to learn how to manage staff effectively. He was one of those people who thought fear was the best motivation in the workplace. He was out in the workplace BTW.
He did have a flip side though - when my position was eliminated in a company downsizing, he lobbied another group with an opening to take me (I was also very qualified for the position anyway). So he wasn't all bad, but I was glad to be out of his group.
He later left the company (his star began to fade fast after I left his team) and he moved to another city.
I just quit a shitty part-time minimum wage job after 6 days because the boss and his staff were so disgusting. I have NEVER heard a boss talk so filthy and disgusting (or about sex period) to their employees or let their employees talk the same. I'm no prude but I don't want to hear that kind of talk in a work environment, especially not from a supervisor. I also heard several borderline-racist jokes by both him and other employees. The final straw was when I got yelled at for simply asking a question to make sure I was doing something right. I quit after that day and don't regret it. I can put up with bullshit for the right price, but not for a part-time minimum wage job I hate with no benefits.
Who to choose? The venomous anorexic OCD with the massive fake implants or the manic antiabortion activist/embezzler?
