It seems like a waste of time and money. The rain cleans it and it always looks nice enough, though not showroom. Does this make me trashy? Please take my poll. Do you wash your car?
I never wash my car

I wish I could. But it costs over $10 for a good one and I'm on a super tight budget thanks to a shit job. My landlord pays the water bill and I don't want to take advantage of that benefit (I'm already watering my plants because of this damned drought).

I have a beige car that never appears to be dirty and live in a city that rains enough that I'll usually be driving in the rain a few times a month. I do clean the interior, but will not go for a carwash. I think it gets a complimentary wash when I have it serviced, which is extremely rare.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | August 5, 2012 10:40 PM |
It is a hygiene thing.
Some people never wash anything.

Live in Ohio and we get a shitload of snow. Usually wash my car 3 or 4 times a year from Dec thru April. Have to get the salt off. Other than that, never wash it. I pull it out of the garage when it's going to rain, and that works fine for me.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | August 5, 2012 10:45 PM |
I live rural where the tractors churn up the dust. I have to wash my car weekly, but I do it myself with a powerhose. I don't have to use soap, the waterblast is powerful enough but sometimes I do so I can get all suds up myself.

One of my neighbors who is really into hiking and taking her car into the muddy dusty outdoors far from the city never washed hers, and people would write "WASH ME" on the back window. She wrote "NO I LIKE 2 B DIRTY" beneath that, which is fair I guess. But then after that, someone wrote "FART" and "DINGLEBERRIES" on the remaining dusty parts--only after that, the car got washed!

i have off street parking (assigned) under a tree that produces some sort of black berries, that birds love, and that gives them instant runs. i have to wash my car. it cost less than $3 with the diy car wash.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | August 5, 2012 10:58 PM |
Well with some GM cars, washing could cause a mechanical failure.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | August 5, 2012 11:02 PM |
Not to mention, R8, the loss of paint.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | August 5, 2012 11:25 PM |
I park outside & it seldom rains here, so the car does become covered with dust & pollen.
But I only get it washed when I find some charity-type group like a school raising money for the band, etc. -- it's got to be a cause I'm willing to support (no churches, unless they're raising money for something like a food bank).
A couple of times, I've had it done by a group raising money for a poor family that can't afford a funeral, but I want to be sure it's legit (like reading about the death in the newspaper).
$10 is the most I've been asked to donate -- I'm too lazy to do it myself & I can afford to contribute that much to charity a few times per year.

I drive through the car wash after getting my gas on occasion. Otherwise, I let the rain do its thing. And I live in San Diego, so it doesn't rain much except in the winter.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | August 5, 2012 11:49 PM |
Never. I will wash it and detail it when I sell it. Dust, dirt protectects it from the elements. You may laugh but I have done this on my last 3 cars and it works. Dust is a great UV protector inside on the dash. I keep it clean of trash etc but never wash it.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | August 5, 2012 11:56 PM |
OP, you think it's the rain, but I wash your car while you're sleeping. You don't have to thank me; I do it because I want to do it.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | August 5, 2012 11:57 PM |
OP is hoping Subaru will pay him, but I think that ad concept will not becoming back anytime soon.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | August 5, 2012 11:58 PM |
If you don't wash it, it's going to start rusting a lot sooner than if you don't. Especially in the winter, when all of that salt ends up on your car, you really can't just rely on the rain.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | August 6, 2012 12:00 AM |
Here in England they have guys who wash it while you shop in the supermarket and do the inside.
I like a clean, vacuumed car, personally.
I get it done once a month.

Why are you assuming everyone lives in a city like Minneapolis where they spread salt?
In many states and cities in the US there is no spreading of salt in winter because there are no regular snow storms. Take my own city, Portland, OR. I don't think we've had salt spread on the roads in eight years.

Not if you live in Southern California. No salted roads in the winter here.

Don't you want to just "be" in a clean, detailed car. After all, cars aren't cheap. We insure them etc, so why not keep it clean.
CHEAP BASTARDS.

My car is 14 years old, R22. I really couldn't care less what it looks like at this point.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | August 6, 2012 12:33 AM |
Most cars are rust proof anyway these days.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | August 6, 2012 12:43 AM |
I would much rather be in a clean ass pounding every inch of it than worry about a clean car.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | August 6, 2012 12:45 AM |
[quote]Yes, how dare he assume such a thing?
I'm baffled he would, given that they don't (or rarely ever) spread salt in: Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, Oakland, San Jose, Los Angeles, San Diego, San Luis Obispo, Phoenix, Las Vegas, Houston, Galveston, San Antonio, Corpus Christi, Biloxi, Memphis, New Orleans, Gulfport, Mobile, Jacksonville, Tallahassee, Orlando, St. Petersburg, Tampa, Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, Savannah, Charleston...

by Anonymous | reply 27 | August 6, 2012 12:52 AM |

I don't wash mine more than 4 times per week. It doesn't snow much in DC.

I get my car washed every day. I have a person who comes to my office with all the supplies.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | August 6, 2012 3:37 PM |
People who are car proud are the very definition of trashy.
That's not to say one's car should be a roving pigsty, but the obsessive tending of a car is very Whiskey Tango.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | August 6, 2012 3:52 PM |
I washed my car by hand this weekend AND polished it. So fucking tiresome and boring. It looks nice, but honestly, I sometimes wonder if waxing/polishing is overrated. The polish made the car feel slick, but I honestly don't know if it shines any better.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | April 20, 2014 4:52 AM |
[quote] I never wash my car...Does this make me trashy?
On the contrary. While never washing a car may be a bit extreme, it's trashy people who are obsessed with their cars and car washing.

When I was into drankin', I'd pull into on of those self-service washes at least once a week.
I'd start sipping whiskey from a sports bottle while vacuuming the interior.
When it was time to wash, I'd squirt the exterior with a random assortment of different fluids.
By that point, I'd inevitably gaze upon the scrub brush. It was tempting, but I had fallen on wet cement too often.
For the finish, I'd fog the interior with Le Male.
Yes, I'm that old.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | April 20, 2014 5:46 AM |
Yes. $12 for a wash, vacuume, inside wipe down and inside windows washed. Takes them about 45 minutes, would take me a few hours. I'm a slob so I need to do it. It's so nice to get into a clean car!

by Anonymous | reply 38 | April 20, 2014 6:40 PM |
In a normal year I wash my car when it gets hard to see out of the windows.
But it's a serious drought year, and I'll just squeegee the windows so I can see. The car will be clean when it rains again.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | April 20, 2014 11:46 PM |
I intend to wash my car when I get one.

by Anonymous | reply 42 | August 6, 2019 5:30 PM |
Rain is nature's car wash. I used to go in the Bay Area where they did inside and out, but here in Massachusetts I can only find outside only. Fuck that.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | August 6, 2019 6:46 PM |
Just do it on the driveway with a bucket of soapy water, a sponge and a hose for rinsing.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | August 6, 2019 7:04 PM |
I let the rain or morning dew do the washing. I live in So. CA. I might hose it off with water occasionally.

by Anonymous | reply 46 | August 6, 2019 7:10 PM |
I’m an Uber driver who drives a Mercedes. I wash the car 3-4 times a month lately. When I lived in Portland, I paid $40 a month for unlimited washes and I washed it more often. Now that I’m in NYC, unlimited washes is $85 a month so I don’t do that.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | August 6, 2019 7:31 PM |
I do not give a fuck how my car looks.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | August 6, 2019 8:22 PM |
When I lived in Weho, would wash it every week at the carwash by the bars. It's a pretty car culture. I remember noticing spots the second they showed up.
Live in SF now, as soon as the fog rolls in at night to get a fine layer of micro spots. Don't even notice them anymore.
Will run the car through an automated wash 2-3 months still though. I like taking road trips on weekends with the windows clean and clear (Sonoma County looks so much prettier that way).
Besides, nothing says poor lazy slob than a dirty car - especially in California.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | August 6, 2019 8:32 PM |
Have to keep it washed in the winter -- salt! But the last time I got in a hurry and forgot to crack the hood and put the maintenance charger back on the battery. Damn thing was frozen shut for months; somehow my battery survived.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | August 6, 2019 8:40 PM |
I wish I could get away with never washing it. But I live in a dry, dusty part of California, where it doesn't rain for 8 months in a row and everything gets covered in dust. I HAVE to clean the windows as a safety thing, if I left them dust up I'd be a hazard in traffic.
And the rest of the car gets so dusty that it discolors your clothes if you brush on it. So I wash it maybe 3 times a year.

Austin is under constant construction so I wash my car once a month, give or take. I feel like dirt ages the paint but that may be my own myth,
by Anonymous | reply 52 | August 7, 2019 11:36 AM |
I live in my car so and never wash it! That’s what rain is for!
by Anonymous | reply 53 | August 7, 2019 11:41 AM |

After watching many episodes of Forensic Files I wipe down the interior of my car thoroughly...
by Anonymous | reply 57 | August 12, 2019 9:32 PM |
I bought my current truck when I wrecked my old Nissan truck with 175K miles on it. I was between jobs, so I bought another Nissan truck with 102K miles on it for $5000. Six years later, it's still running great, after towing many U-Haul trailers and using it to move five times (two times > 1000 miles). I believe I got my $5,000 worth.
It's gray and I have never washed it. I've beaten it up a little bit trucking things around (pun intended), but I always heard, "If your truck's not beat-up, you ain't using it right."
Where I live, it rains every day in the summer, so there's no point in washing it. And it never shows the dirt.
by Anonymous | reply 58 | August 12, 2019 9:33 PM |
I don't. I have a bird feeder and at the height of summer when there's a million birds flying back and forth to their nests my car gets bird shit on it. My husband washes the shit off my car when he washes his car.
by Anonymous | reply 59 | August 12, 2019 11:39 PM |
You are lucky. I live in the East Bay of California—tons of pollen and pollution means I have to wash my white car weekly. And don’t get me started about that damn bird sanctuary nearby.
