- any story dealing with LGBT people in mainstream news media read the comments with caution, the anti-LGBT bigots are always out in full force whenever such a story is in the news.
Though the Star, unlike Xtra, does sanitize some comments to make it seem that anti-LGBT bigotry isn't so bad there's still plenty of bigotry on display there. Personally I wish they wouldn't do so, I think it's a good thing that such vile beliefs see the light of day. As LGBT people we're all familiar with them I'm sure but its easy for cis-hetero people to pretend that such things aren't a problem, allowing all comments would be an eye opener for many.
- Come on you guys, it has nothing to do with religion. my husband is atheist and has been all his life and does NOT accept or tolerate homosexuality at all. I also discovered that my best friend's husband is the same way & he also is not religious at all.
The irony of it is that both my friend and I are the "religious" people and we both are VERY tolerant & would FIGHT for their rights.
I lived in Europe, Middle East & North America and I see always that MOST heterosexual men are very intolerant when it comes to gay men.
I have a feeling it has something to do with their own sexuality lol

The owner of Rental Diva, who is facing a human rights complaint, says she is the real victim, not the gay couple who she denied an apartment to in July.

Stewart is now digging in her heels, saying she plans to file a complaint of her own against Thiago. She says he should be held responsible for the angry reaction of members of the gay community.
“You don’t even understand what I’ve endured,” she says. “Death threats, harassment, slander from the entire [gay] community. I had to call the police… Shame on these people who are calling and threatening me.”
Stewart, the owner of the unlicensed rental agency in Brampton, maintains that she was only doing what the landlord, her client, instructed. He explicitly told her that the apartment should not be rented to gay couples, she says.
The reason for the discrimination is on religious grounds, she says. The landlord is a member of the Seventh-day Adventists, a Christian denomination distinguished by its observance of Saturday as the Sabbath.
Derucio, who meets his human rights lawyer next month, is directing his OHRC complaint at both Stewart and the landlord. Steward has so far refused to reveal the identity of the landlord.
“If they want [the identity of the landlord], the Tribunal can go after Rental Diva to get to the landlord,” he says. “If Rental Diva doesn’t give up their information, I’m guessing the Tribunal can still go after them.”
Stewart says she is not worried about a complaint to the OHRC. Asked if she regrets the discrimination inflicted on Thiago, Stewart says “no.”
“No, absolutely not,” she says. “You know why? It’s not directed at Thiago. That’s why I never felt bad. It’s his lifestyle. Why don’t people understand that? It’s not him. It’s his lifestyle.”
“Gay people have choices about who they are. Religious groups also have rights. This is religion versus homosexuality.”

In the current battle I am facing between religion and homosexuality I am asking all my gay friends who have heard the story that happened in the summer to please stop any calls or death threats that are being made to the company rental divas. I am handling this with the law and will take it upon my self to make sure that justice is served for all of us. YES what she did was WRONG but two wrongs don't make a right!!! So please although many of you are passionate about this story please leave it in the hands of the HRC! This is all I ask! Yes she discriminated all of our human rights and it was uncalled for but I am confident that this will not go un noticed or swept under the carpet. Ive been saying it for months that death threats and prank phone calls are not the way to go around this! it makes us look bad as a community and it's not what i believe in. - R129 makes an excellent point. One can dislike black and hispanic people's (some of them)'s "lifestyles" (loud music, etc.) in some inner-city neighborhoods. People middle-aged (like my second-best friend) can dislike young people's lifestyle: loud music, late-night parties. I, white, can dislike the lifestyle of white trash some places I've lived. Straights can dislike gay's lifestyles. Asians can dislike blacks'. Etc., etc. But everyone has rights, and unlessyou're going to live in a cave or a desert island: you have to cope to some extent.
But this whole "religious rights" is VERY interesting. I can't wait to see how the Canadian courts (if it goes to court) find.

- Not sure what the Canadian laws are like but in California, if you are renting out a unit that is part of an owner-occupied 4 unit or less building then you can pretty much discriminate however you want. As long as you live there. So if its a house and they are renting a basement apartment they could be able to do that. It's stupid to put that in an ad. And I believe advertising that IS illegal. But if it's an owner-occ situation you don't have to give a reason.

- Everyone is not going to like you for a multitude of reasons. And you cannot adjudicate prejudice into non-existence now or ever, to believe so is stupidity. For every step the gay rights movement takes forward expect a reactionary resistance to arise in like measure. None of this is new and unpredictable, especially to those of us who have lived through similar times tabled with not an all too different problem. Only a myopic and undeveloped vision could view this woman's actions as discriminatory. I've personally had people in my life who have given me a head's up even at the expense of my own personal loss, and I thanked them.

However the Supreme Court rules on gay marriage this term, we social and religious conservatives should not fool ourselves: We have lost this fight at the cultural level, and there is no reason to believe that we will prevail in the legal arena. Sorry, folks, but there it is. Wishing it were otherwise does not make it so.
Even if the Supreme Court does not now declare same-sex marriage a constitutional right, the popular momentum favoring marriage rights for gay couples is undeniable. If the high court refuses to constitutionalize gay marriage, it’s only a matter of time before most states achieve it through legislative means or popular referendum.
Young people, even those who favor the GOP, generally don’t mind gay marriage. And why should they? Same-sex marriage makes logical sense given the premises about sex, marriage and individual autonomy that most Americans today accept as normative. The Sexual Revolution is over. Our side lost.
The best conservatives can hope for is that the high court will carve out strong and significant protections for religious liberty. This is a much bigger deal than most Americans realize.
In debating same-sex marriage over the past few years, I have been struck by how few people understand its religious liberty implications. Even many conservatives seem to be like the talk-radio host Glenn Beck: under the impression that the issue is whether or not the government will be able to compel churches, synagogues and mosques to marry gay couples, or quit preaching against homosexuality.
Thanks to the First Amendment, it’s not going to happen. But beyond those narrow bounds, it’s all up in the air.
Religion is not only what you say and believe; it’s also what you do. The activities of religious organizations — including charities and schools — that do not accept same-sex marriage will almost certainly be circumscribed in significant ways. From running afoul of public accommodations laws to the potential loss of tax-exempt status — a devastating prospect for many churches and religious charities, which operate on tiny margins — traditionalists and their institutions could find themselves hard-pressed by laws treating anti-gay discrimination as legally equivalent to racial discrimination.
In the 1983 Bob Jones University decision, the Supreme Court ruled that the Internal Revenue Service could revoke the tax-exempt status of a private religious school if the government determined that the institution’s racially discriminatory policies interfered with a compelling public interest — in this case, combating racism.
Would the Bob Jones logic be used against religious institutions that discriminated against same-sex couples? It is unclear how this will play out in the courts, but given that younger Americans both accept gay marriage in large numbers and are becoming more secular than their parents and grandparents, it appears only a matter of time before the social consensus, which often leads the legal consensus, presses religious traditionalists against the wall.
It’s a safe bet that most of the orthodox faithful would be willing to withstand the opprobrium of society as long as they can continue to practice their religion as they wish. That’s why conservatives must hope that the high court will find a way to create a legal catacomb in which the orthodox can take refuge.
The media don’t want to face this issue either. For one thing, they rarely get religion and may not understand the concern. For another, they have taken sides in this struggle and recognize that it does not help the gay rights cause to have people thinking about the full legal implications of granting homosexuality constitutionally protected status.
Cardinal Francis George of Chicago, reflecting on the rising tide of secularist aggression, recently said that while he expects to die in his bed, “my successor will die in prison and his successor will die a martyr in the public square.” There is more going on here than a simple question of equal rights for gay Americans. When people deny that religious liberty is not a meaningful issue in the gay marriage debate, do not believe them.

- My brother and his partner (Both passed from AIDS very early on) had this happen to them, they were refused a one bedroom apartment as a male male couple. They tried to sue but found out that that sort of discrimination was not protected by the law in Texas. They bought a building (about six units) fixed it up very nice and refused to rent to hetrosexuals. Amazingly enough one managed to file suit and the case went to court but was thrown out.
- Deal with it, and she is right stop acting like gays are the only people discrinated aganst, I know now many people that have provlems with gay men, that's because gay men rape little boys not straight men, and some people have anxiety toward gay people, and why should someone have to feel uncomfortable because you want to be gay, I don't like to be stared at by men sexually anymore then women want to be, so just relize that if you do abnormal things, and you don't act how society expects you to, then your going to have to deal with it just like a junky is dealt with, I wouldn't rent to gay people cause I don't want to have to explain to my child your issues, I am a breeder and expect my children to give me grand children when they are ready and all grown up I don't want them to be gay dead ends
