- R10 I know times are tough, but she could have declined the account.
Yes I know someone else would have taken it, but it would have shown her character if she had not taken the account.
- I think what she did was fine. What's the point if the landlord would say no? I'm not sure that her race is of such significance that it merits being in the headline.
- No one is allowed to compare homo-hatred to racism against blacks. It's a known thing that it's an argument that can't be won, no matter how shitty the gay person is treated. I've seen pretentious liberal academics who have been pretty much shit on because they were gay, meekly say that white racism against blacks is really a far worse issue and that we all need to dialogue with each other and find a common ground and look at the issues and all that other nauseating bullshit nothingness that they like to spout.
- R13 she said
[quote] Look, I’m a person of colour. I know what it’s like to be discriminated against.
- [quote]She has every right to behave this way to serve her own best interests.
Uh - no.
The federal government and every province and territory in Canada has a human rights act that prohibits discrimination and harassment on several grounds (e.g. race, sex, religion) in private and public sector employment, housing, public services and publicity.
...Today, sexual orientation is explicitly mentioned as a ground of prohibited discrimination in the human rights acts of all jurisdictions in Canada.
- Republicans want to make Religious Discrimination legal because if infringes on people's Freedom Of Religion.
- So anyone calling her number at R11
- [quote]Look, I’m a person of colour. I know what it’s like to be discriminated against.
Not in Canada, she doesn't.
As a whole, Canadian society is perfecly fine with blacks.
It's the natives and immigrants we hate. ;)
Canuck
- I see that the DL Kapos found this thread quickly.
- I can't believe people are supporting her. It would have been fine for her to WARN the couple that the landlord is homophobic and to let them make up their own minds, but to deny their application because they're gay is discrimination.
You do realize the arguments people are making here are the same ones given for refusing service to black people back in the day?! (It's the owner's/landlord's right, just preventing conflict, well within their rights to have who they want etc etc).
Wtf is wrong with people? Refusing people housing based on their sexual orientation is wrong.
- It's because everything black people do is due to their race, R13. She did this because it's genetic or black culture. Dan Savage 101.
For example with regard to this incident at the link. The OP wouldn't say:
"White Cake Shop Owner Says He'll Close Down His Business Before Selling Wedding Cake to Gay Couple."

- SO, if I set up a religion that believes black people are monkeys, can I get the affirmative action laws repealed because they infringe on my religious freedoms?
- Maybe if the owner had said something like, "Look. I'm white so that makes a significant difference here," he would have, r22.
- Of course that is the case r16, but that's not the point, the point is the agent knew that the landlord would treat them poorly. Discrimination runs rampant below the legal radar - the agent was just saving them the heartache.
- She's an idiot for making it sound like owner has a right to discriminate. He doesn't, it's illegal. But the renter can also discriminate and choose not to give money to a gay hating freak.
If she had told the guy that the landlord was a religious fundie and antigay, renter probably would have looked elsewhere and wouldn't have felt discriminated against.
Same results, different outcomes.
- R21 be aware that this forum (and many of these posts) has been invaded by Truth4Time, Secret Religious Group that posts here.
- As previously pointed out, r35, it would have been fine for her to have warned the couple about potential problems and to let them make up their own minds, but to flat-out deny them equal access to housing because they're gay is wrong.
The exact same arguments you're making were once made about denying housing to blacks.
- Well, that makes all the difference here on DL, right R24? Don't bother.
Laughable
- This rental agent also refuses to rent to welfare and unemployed people as well.
On several of her ads she writes

- The same faggot couple probably says the "n-word" when in private.
- This thread will have a million hits before midnight, all because of the OP choice of thread topic. This kind of thing happens all the time and usually to spare the renters or buyers unnecessary bullshit.

- "It can't be discrimination because I'm black."
- No excuse. Of course, all agents of any stripe are scum-inclined, but despite that nature, she is acting criminally and should be fined or lose her license.
"I was only following orders." That she's 'sympathetic', well, gross of her to bring that up. I'm black, so I understand how you field hands feel. Sorry about the whip.
- When somebody refuses to hire a black agent/rent to blacks, I wonder how they would react to a "That's a part of life" excuse.
- Well, I think they found the college lesbian Chik fil A thread, R36. I can't deal with this shit right now.
R29
- [quote]This kind of thing happens all the time and usually to spare the renters or buyers unnecessary bullshit.
No it doesn't, not if the agent has a license she wants to keep. You can not legally discriminate against people when it comes to housing. It's not up to her to make the decision to "spare" someone trouble. She's a moron for not knowing the basic anti-discrimination laws she's required to follow if she wants to remain in business. She's even more of a fucktard for freely admitting to her blatant discrimination.
I own a business and most of my employees are white. Should I refuse to hire people of color because some of my employees might be racists? Should I "spare them" the heartache of working alongside white workers because discrimination is a "part of life?"

- It does happen all the time, what is different is that someone is openly admitting it.
You can deny someone a job or a rental and come up with all sorts of reasons rather than reveal the real one. It happens all the time.
It's sad, but it's true.
- Who are you referring to with "they"? The entire black community isn't homophobic.
R22 There are some white gay males who love to bitch about how bad the black community is towards gays and lesbians and love to only point out the negative. Yet when the black community shows its support for us or when one of them comes out, they can't be bothered to show any support. And then they have the nerve to get pissed when called out on it.

- Wow, she really must not want a career in real-estate anymore.
But r42 is correct. I get where she is coming from. She is laying the cards out on the table for all to see. Some black people become like this after being desensitized to discrimination.
Hopefully, when they take her out of business and go after these landlords, they will be made an example to others.
Black%20and%20gay
- OP probably shouldn't have mentioned the race of the rental agent in the headline, although it is germane to the story, since the 'black' rental agent herself uses her race to defend her actions.
Having said that, this is Canada, and both the rental agent and the landlord have violated Canadian and Ontarian Human Rights Codes. Although it will probably end with a settlement to the gay couple, there is absolutely no doubt that they will be held accountable. In this country, discrimination in housing, employment, and several other areas on the basis of sexual orientation isn't an option or a matter of opinion; it is AGAINST THE LAW.
The rental agent shows not only bigotry, but stupidity, first by admitting her actions, and secondly by implicating the landlord in the same violations. She is about to get educated, not to mention finding her bank account depleted, and possibly, her business shut down.
For those of you upthread defending her, you are wrong. You are applying a different cultural construct within the context of a civilized nation that takes human rights abuses very seriously, and punishes them accordingly.

- To the Canadiens here -- is she accurate in saying that the landlord has a religious exemption from discrimination laws?
In California, there is an exemption but only in the case of an owner-occupied single-family residence, where the owner is renting out a room. Which I don't think is the case here.
- THANK you r31.
- Yeah, R46. In the U.S. it's usually the wealthy ones who sometimes become desensitized ( trust me, I've had some jaw-dropping experiences with the Jack and Jill set). But not all. I don't really know too much about race relations in Canada. I'm a little surprised to hear about the homophobia from the immigrants from the Bahamas and Barbados being as intense as Jamaican homophobia. I've never had any problems in the Bahamas or Barbados. I've never really noticed any intense homophobia. Strange. Anyway she should be ashamed of herself. But she should be ashamed of herself no matter her skin color.
And yes I agree, R43.

No, there are no religious exemptions. The bigoted landlords will lose in the human rights court and will probably have to make a payment to the gay couple.
- [quote]To the Canadiens here -- is she accurate in saying that the landlord has a religious exemption from discrimination laws?
No, she is not.

I can attest to this fact, having spent a large part of my life in Toronto. I spent a few years living in a predominantly Jamaican area when I was a teenager, even picked up some patois.
Anyway, the people from the Caribbean who live in Toronto do not hide their homophobia. They do not hesitate to talk shit about gays and lesbians shit in front of others. The ones I've encoutered, I've called them out on it, but it's useless. Their homophobia is deeply ingrained. Their bigotry is learned at a very young age.

- Here are a couple of quotes from the Toronto Star article
Juliet Stewart says her clients, a Seventh-day Adventist husband and wife, told her in no uncertain terms during a screening interview that they would never allow a gay couple to rent their basement apartment.
That may violate Ontario’s Human Rights Code, but Stewart is unbowed, and the homeowners, who live in the house with the rental apartment, aren’t backing down either, she says.
“If the Human Rights Commission comes after me, they come after me,’’ Stewart said in an interview this week, adding she has received death threats over the stance she’s taking.
She said clients in her business often voice preferences for renters — no pets, no smoking, no gay people, no social assistance, ethnic groups they like or dislike — and Stewart always obliges.
“That’s just the way things are,’’ she says.
She says she’s also a Seventh-day Adventist, and though she wouldn’t discriminate against gay renters herself, she understands why the homeowners in this case are digging in their heels.
“It’s not about my views, it’s the clients’ choice,’’ Stewart said, later adding she won’t apologize for “being honest.’’
“The bottom line is, at the end of the day it’s (their home),’’ Stewart says, adding that as a black woman, she is fully conversant with issues of racism and discrimination.
- By the tone of her ad, it sounds like this bitch is actually selling a screening service to landlords to help them discriminate on whatever basis they really can't do legally themselves.
Oh and r62, r31 and r49 do not belong here. And r9 is a self-loather.

- The rental agent is a complete fool. She's basically operating an agency that specializes in what discriminatory bigoted clients want and don't want in renters. And the most disgusting thing is how she blatantly admits it without any sort of shame. Her career is clearly over and the landlord also should be sued.

- Did anyone tell her that discrimination is illegal, and it's not "a part of life" in the eyes of the law?

Yes, idiot @ R72. It's better than losing her license altogether which is what will happen now that she's broken the law.
That's like someone saying, "What do you expect me to do? I'm not going to stop robbing banks because I'll lose money if I do."

What part of that don't the fools justifying her here. don't understand?
Some ppl here said she sounds self loathing. To me she sounds like a greedy opportunist.

It's so tiresome and sickening to see people come to liberal, tolerant Canada and basically spit in our faces. Yeah, I know - they may have been born here. The point is there values are inconsistent with this country's values and laws.

She actually is NOT licensed. She is calling herself a rental 'consultant'.
- If she's placing people in homes and getting a fee, that requires a license. If she's operating without a license then she's got even bigger problems.
- R87 are you sure? Is it required in Ontario, Canada?
- anyone else?
- Techincally, she requires a license because she's trading in real estate.

- Someone should call her up and pretend to be a potential client, but this time say you do not want to rent to blacks. See if she's interested in renting out your unit then!
- She has a point. Most of you 'mos only want to live somewhere to cheeze someone off.
No one wants 'mos coming in with their meth parties and spreading AIDS and chestering children.
She did the guy a favor.
- R92, can't you do better than that?
Pathetic.
- Some members of the gay community are up for the fight with the realtor consultant and the homophobic landlord and don't have a problem to enforce their right and endure having a landlord who will nag and bully them throughout their rental stay.
Others value their peace (of mind) and wouldn't want to get involved with homophobic landlords in the first place.
- Chestering, R92?
Are you 14?
- You hypocrites. If the woman had said she always advises her gay clients the steer clear of certain properties because the landlord is homophobic (which is what she should be doing instead of employing tactics that are certainly discriminatory). She should let the client decide if they want to go ahead with the tenancy application after they've been advised of what they're up against. It's shouldn't be her decision who to put forward and who not to. Those of you who are calling her names would be hailing her efforts to protect the gay community from haters.
- One-sidedness in victim cultures is the norm.
- Did someone poke the 'mos troll with a stick? I thought he'd slithered back under his rock.
As for you, r96...how would it be if this agent told blacks or asians they'd better not apply for a place because the landlord is racist?
And how did she become aware of their homophobia in this instance? Obviously she's discussed it with them. If they raised the topic first she is obliged to inform them that it's illegal to discriminate on that basis in Canada. She has broken the law and should be charged. That goes for the landlord as well, you self-loathing POS.
- [quote]blacks or asians they'd better not apply for a place because the landlord is racist
A warning would be fine imho. Would it be better just not to say anything and pretend everything is fine and dandy, when the agent knows there is a problem? Don't agents lie enough as it is? Warning a renter about potential problems is a world away from denying their application imho.
It's the "you CAN'T apply" part that's discriminatory, not informing renters about the landlord's prejudices imho.
- They've already beat you to it R23 - It's called Mormonism.
- Simpleton @ R99, did you not read R98? If she, as licensed agent, is aware of discrimination by a landlord, she is required by law to report it. It is not okay to just "warn" someone.

Well, it's a pity the bomb testing took place on Bikini Island instead of Jamaica.
- Cunt at r101. It's not discriminatory in and of itself to privately hate gays. Being a racist asshole in and of itself is not illegal. An agent telling a potential renter: "This landlord is a racist asshole," is not illegal. Refusing a tenant's application IS. THAT is the part that's illegal.
This is the distinction I am drawing. Maybe if you listened to people instead of insulting them, you wouldn't die alone.

Actually, the conversation would be: "Mr. Landlord, I have this nice couple who is interested in your apartment. Oh, you are not interested? See you in court."
Ironically, her actions may well result in shielding the homophobic landlords from the lawsuit, since it's difficult to prove discrimination when the housing agent won't even let you apply.

The Rental Agent warned them and told them that property owners did not want homosexual tenants.
She did her job. Not only that she suggested other properties to them.
It wasn't like she discriminated against them because she was gay.The homeowners she works for have issues not her.

- R109,thanks for the link to the ad. The province of Ontario doesn't allow security or damage deposits for pets. Landlords cannot tell people that pets aren't allowed.
Also, a landlord can't say shit like "only mature professionals allowed" because that would be discriminatory against all kinds of people who don't earn income a traditional way (e.g., pensions, social assistance, disability, etc.).
And it sounds like the apartment is an illegal basement apartment. That apartment could be reported to the municipality it's in. The landlords would not be allowed to rent it if it was reported.

Though the Star, unlike Xtra, does sanitize some comments to make it seem that anti-LGBT bigotry isn't so bad there's still plenty of bigotry on display there. Personally I wish they wouldn't do so, I think it's a good thing that such vile beliefs see the light of day. As LGBT people we're all familiar with them I'm sure but its easy for cis-hetero people to pretend that such things aren't a problem, allowing all comments would be an eye opener for many.
- Come on you guys, it has nothing to do with religion. my husband is atheist and has been all his life and does NOT accept or tolerate homosexuality at all. I also discovered that my best friend's husband is the same way & he also is not religious at all.
The irony of it is that both my friend and I are the "religious" people and we both are VERY tolerant & would FIGHT for their rights.
I lived in Europe, Middle East & North America and I see always that MOST heterosexual men are very intolerant when it comes to gay men.
I have a feeling it has something to do with their own sexuality lol

- UPDATE
The owner of Rental Diva, who is facing a human rights complaint, says she is the real victim, not the gay couple who she denied an apartment to in July.
he community responded to the story with outrage. Many people calling and emailing Stewart personally to express an opinion on the policies of the agency, she says.
Stewart is now digging in her heels, saying she plans to file a complaint of her own against Thiago. She says he should be held responsible for the angry reaction of members of the gay community.
“You don’t even understand what I’ve endured,” she says. “Death threats, harassment, slander from the entire [gay] community. I had to call the police… Shame on these people who are calling and threatening me.”
Stewart, the owner of the unlicensed rental agency in Brampton, maintains that she was only doing what the landlord, her client, instructed. He explicitly told her that the apartment should not be rented to gay couples, she says.
The reason for the discrimination is on religious grounds, she says. The landlord is a member of the Seventh-day Adventists, a Christian denomination distinguished by its observance of Saturday as the Sabbath.
Derucio, who meets his human rights lawyer next month, is directing his OHRC complaint at both Stewart and the landlord. Steward has so far refused to reveal the identity of the landlord.
“If they want [the identity of the landlord], the Tribunal can go after Rental Diva to get to the landlord,” he says. “If Rental Diva doesn’t give up their information, I’m guessing the Tribunal can still go after them.”
Stewart says she is not worried about a complaint to the OHRC. Asked if she regrets the discrimination inflicted on Thiago, Stewart says “no.”
“No, absolutely not,” she says. “You know why? It’s not directed at Thiago. That’s why I never felt bad. It’s his lifestyle. Why don’t people understand that? It’s not him. It’s his lifestyle.”
“Gay people have choices about who they are. Religious groups also have rights. This is religion versus homosexuality.”

- No, it's religion versus discrimination based on sexual orientation.
- The gay man at the center of this controversy has issued a statement.
Death threats are a no no!!!!
In the current battle I am facing between religion and homosexuality I am asking all my gay friends who have heard the story that happened in the summer to please stop any calls or death threats that are being made to the company rental divas. I am handling this with the law and will take it upon my self to make sure that justice is served for all of us. YES what she did was WRONG but two wrongs don't make a right!!! So please although many of you are passionate about this story please leave it in the hands of the HRC! This is all I ask! Yes she discriminated all of our human rights and it was uncalled for but I am confident that this will not go un noticed or swept under the carpet. Ive been saying it for months that death threats and prank phone calls are not the way to go around this! it makes us look bad as a community and it's not what i believe in. Thanks guys and I promise you I am fighting not only for my rights but for all of our human rights as a gay community!

- And I don't want to live near black people, but they're a part of life. Unfortunately.

- R129 makes an excellent point. One can dislike black and hispanic people's (some of them)'s "lifestyles" (loud music, etc.) in some inner-city neighborhoods. People middle-aged (like my second-best friend) can dislike young people's lifestyle: loud music, late-night parties. I, white, can dislike the lifestyle of white trash some places I've lived. Straights can dislike gay's lifestyles. Asians can dislike blacks'. Etc., etc. But everyone has rights, and unlessyou're going to live in a cave or a desert island: you have to cope to some extent.
But this whole "religious rights" is VERY interesting. I can't wait to see how the Canadian courts (if it goes to court) find.

In 2012, Black people might not have evolved, they just didn't vote in as large a segment and had a lesser effect on the election.
- R126 Typical responses from this Stewart person. At the end of the article her true feelings come out and we find out she thinks homosexuality is a choice. The landlord is likely imaginary.
- Not sure what the Canadian laws are like but in California, if you are renting out a unit that is part of an owner-occupied 4 unit or less building then you can pretty much discriminate however you want. As long as you live there. So if its a house and they are renting a basement apartment they could be able to do that. It's stupid to put that in an ad. And I believe advertising that IS illegal. But if it's an owner-occ situation you don't have to give a reason.
- was it because they were gay or because they were white?
- STFU One black woman not renting to a gay couple because of her client who is probably white. Doesn't mean blacks haven't evolved. Stop your whining and hysteria. What she did was wrong but death threats and generalizations are wrong too!

That lying cunt! I'm part of that [gay] community and I did not threaten, harrass or slander her. My dear friend Lesbian Julie also did no such thing (and no Lesbian Julie is not a cunt).

- Everyone is not going to like you for a multitude of reasons. And you cannot adjudicate prejudice into non-existence now or ever, to believe so is stupidity. For every step the gay rights movement takes forward expect a reactionary resistance to arise in like measure. None of this is new and unpredictable, especially to those of us who have lived through similar times tabled with not an all too different problem. Only a myopic and undeveloped vision could view this woman's actions as discriminatory. I've personally had people in my life who have given me a head's up even at the expense of my own personal loss, and I thanked them.

Rod Dreher: Religious liberties and gay marriage

However the Supreme Court rules on gay marriage this term, we social and religious conservatives should not fool ourselves: We have lost this fight at the cultural level, and there is no reason to believe that we will prevail in the legal arena. Sorry, folks, but there it is. Wishing it were otherwise does not make it so.
Even if the Supreme Court does not now declare same-sex marriage a constitutional right, the popular momentum favoring marriage rights for gay couples is undeniable. If the high court refuses to constitutionalize gay marriage, it’s only a matter of time before most states achieve it through legislative means or popular referendum.
Young people, even those who favor the GOP, generally don’t mind gay marriage. And why should they? Same-sex marriage makes logical sense given the premises about sex, marriage and individual autonomy that most Americans today accept as normative. The Sexual Revolution is over. Our side lost.
The best conservatives can hope for is that the high court will carve out strong and significant protections for religious liberty. This is a much bigger deal than most Americans realize.
In debating same-sex marriage over the past few years, I have been struck by how few people understand its religious liberty implications. Even many conservatives seem to be like the talk-radio host Glenn Beck: under the impression that the issue is whether or not the government will be able to compel churches, synagogues and mosques to marry gay couples, or quit preaching against homosexuality.
Thanks to the First Amendment, it’s not going to happen. But beyond those narrow bounds, it’s all up in the air.
Religion is not only what you say and believe; it’s also what you do. The activities of religious organizations — including charities and schools — that do not accept same-sex marriage will almost certainly be circumscribed in significant ways. From running afoul of public accommodations laws to the potential loss of tax-exempt status — a devastating prospect for many churches and religious charities, which operate on tiny margins — traditionalists and their institutions could find themselves hard-pressed by laws treating anti-gay discrimination as legally equivalent to racial discrimination.
In the 1983 Bob Jones University decision, the Supreme Court ruled that the Internal Revenue Service could revoke the tax-exempt status of a private religious school if the government determined that the institution’s racially discriminatory policies interfered with a compelling public interest — in this case, combating racism.
Would the Bob Jones logic be used against religious institutions that discriminated against same-sex couples? It is unclear how this will play out in the courts, but given that younger Americans both accept gay marriage in large numbers and are becoming more secular than their parents and grandparents, it appears only a matter of time before the social consensus, which often leads the legal consensus, presses religious traditionalists against the wall.
It’s a safe bet that most of the orthodox faithful would be willing to withstand the opprobrium of society as long as they can continue to practice their religion as they wish. That’s why conservatives must hope that the high court will find a way to create a legal catacomb in which the orthodox can take refuge.
The media don’t want to face this issue either. For one thing, they rarely get religion and may not understand the concern. For another, they have taken sides in this struggle and recognize that it does not help the gay rights cause to have people thinking about the full legal implications of granting homosexuality constitutionally protected status.
Cardinal Francis George of Chicago, reflecting on the rising tide of secularist aggression, recently said that while he expects to die in his bed, “my successor will die in prison and his successor will die a martyr in the public square.” There is more going on here than a simple question of equal rights for gay Americans. When people deny that religious liberty is not a meaningful issue in the gay marriage debate, do not believe them.

- [quote]Someone should call her up and pretend to be a potential client, but this time say you do not want to rent to blacks. See if she's interested in renting out your unit then!
Excellent idea!
- My brother and his partner (Both passed from AIDS very early on) had this happen to them, they were refused a one bedroom apartment as a male male couple. They tried to sue but found out that that sort of discrimination was not protected by the law in Texas. They bought a building (about six units) fixed it up very nice and refused to rent to hetrosexuals. Amazingly enough one managed to file suit and the case went to court but was thrown out.
- Deal with it, and she is right stop acting like gays are the only people discrinated aganst, I know now many people that have provlems with gay men, that's because gay men rape little boys not straight men, and some people have anxiety toward gay people, and why should someone have to feel uncomfortable because you want to be gay, I don't like to be stared at by men sexually anymore then women want to be, so just relize that if you do abnormal things, and you don't act how society expects you to, then your going to have to deal with it just like a junky is dealt with, I wouldn't rent to gay people cause I don't want to have to explain to my child your issues, I am a breeder and expect my children to give me grand children when they are ready and all grown up I don't want them to be gay dead ends

- I think most people would MUCH rather rent to gays than blacks, so who cares about this cunt and her backwards culture.
