Unfortunately Chicago is one of the most violent cities in America, with around 600 murders a year. My Dad is friends with someone on the Chicago police force and he said when you have that many homicides, there's no way to solve all of them because the moment a file lands on your desk, 3 more murders have occurred before you can begin your investigation.
Here's the latest: "At least 15 people have been shot since 5 p.m. Tuesday in Chicago, including a 10-year-old girl and a man cooling off at an open fire hydrant in the Austin neighborhood on the West Side, authorities said." I don't know what's happening but it's a huge disaster in Chicago week after week. Sorry to say that ever since Rahm has been mayor, the city has been out of control. Daley was keeping it more in control.

No, R13, the hot weather exacerbates violent thuggery. This is a proven phenomenon, known for many decades.
R14, it may make it worse, but it doesn't change the fact that it is an enormously violent city to begin with. It has an above-average homicide rate all-year long.
r12, Yes there are always shootings in Chicago but it's well known that shootings are WORSE when it's hot. People go outside more because they don't have air conditioning and thus more kids get into trouble and fights and people get shot. The reason no one does anything about violence in Chicago though is that the only time the politicians care is when the shooting happens in the Loop or Gold Coast and that's still fairly rare (but not as rare as it used to be).

r17, we have had an abnormal heat wave this year actually. So the heat theory actually can explain the 50 percent rise in murders. But another part of it is fuck-ups in the Chicago P.D. and police cutbacks probably.

R22 I grew up in Austin which according to America's most wanted, is the worst neighborhood in Chicago. I was so proud. Went to Catholic School and a 5th grade field trip was to the Austin Police Station and among other fun things, we were fingerprinted. Came in handy (pun intended) when 2 classmates killed a dentist for $7. Chicago is very segregated, always has been. One street belongs to one gang, another a different gang. The problem now is that no one has ever tried to INTEGRATE them. Acculturate people to others. Now, it's born there, die there. They own the piece of shit they stand on. Mayor Daley kept things in check. For the past 20 years, Chicago was a beautiful, clean city with low crime that brought in tourism and convention dollars. Say what you will, but he was able to get "the machine" to work. Did he have mob ties? Who cares? I always felt safe when I was there. I like Mayor Emmanuel, but if he doesn't get this thuggery under control, it's over for him.

r40, not true at all. For most of the past 20 years Chicago has had a far higher murder rate than NYC. It's just that the vast majority of the murders were black on black, happening in parts of the city that normal people don't ever set foot in. Even so, from what I've seen as a native Chicagoan, the prevalence of nigga street crime like mugging and robbery, even in nice parts of the North Side, is far higher than it is in most comparable parts of NYC. I don't live in Chicago anymore, but I don't have any reason to think the situation is much different now than it's always been.

That's not really true. Many of these neighborhoods are middle class neighborhoods. Gangs are everywhere in and around Chicago. I remember walking around my upper middle class neighborhood and seeing gang signs all over the place.
I still rather live in Chicago with the violence then in NYC with all their rats, roaches and bedbugs.

While Cabrini Green was bulldozed long ago, it was merely a symbol of an intractable problem that isn't a result of a poorly designed series of buildings. The bigger question is why homicide rates in Chicago are, seemingly anomalously, up 38% this year vs. last. An increase in gang warfare is one probable cause, but what was the impetus for gangs regaining strength lost long ago? It's certainly not weather -- although Chicago did have one of its warmest winters on record -- nor can its new mayor shoulder the blame alone. My brother happens to be a criminology professor who did his graduate dissertation on Chicago crime, which is one reason why I happen to know a fair amount about it; I'll ask him next time I see him if he's done any new research on this topic.

It's stupid to think that a local police force could control a sophisticated criminal organization with influence not only in other cities, but other countries-not to mention the prison system. I never heard of a time when gangs weren't powerful in Chicago. They own Chicago and guns are everywhere. If the mothers and grandmothers in the neighborhoods would collect up all the guns and throw them in the lake, there might be a change. If the NRA didn't run this country, we might be more like Canada or Europe.

r33, It's not about guns exactly because Chicago actually has the most restrictive gun laws in the country. Illinois is the only state in the U.S. that the NRA hasn't gotten to approve at least some form of concealed carry and Chicago until a Supreme Court ruling a couple of years ago completely banned handgun ownership. As for Chicago having higher crime rates than NYC, am I the only one who thinks Bloomberg and the NYPD are just better at covering that shit up? I think they're a lot more aggressive with stop-and-frisk too.

Canada is in the middle of a country-wide gang war for control of the drug trade in emerging markets (specifically the Western boom towns). Some asshole shot up the food court at the Eaton Centre in Metro TO over a dispute that started in Edmonton. The media reports these incidents as unrelated with bullshit phrases like "possible gang links." TPTB, including law enforcement, are paid to look the other way, with the stipulation that no civilians are harmed. Unfortunately, no one gives a shit about the low rent kids who are drawn into this, both black and white.

U.S. government statistics hide Latino murderer rates by categorizing them as white but don't hide Latino victims. The government does this pattern of putting bad Latino statistics in with white statistics while at the same time have seperate categories for good or victim Latino statistics. Several months ago I looked at the Wikipedia page for El Paso, Texas and found that according to the government the vast majority of those on welfare are "white" while the city is largely Latino.
I know why they do it. Your description was close. They add perps and victims as White to up the statistics for Whites so the data is more politically correct. The exact terms the DOJ uses is Non White Caucasian.
Funny, all four of the people I know who were shot and killed, all white. Two women. Two young boys. All shot by whites. Four different situations. Two murders, two accidents.

R51 is correct about gun laws outside the US - in a bad year, Toronto has about 60 murders, which is 10% of a bad Chicago year. If you're walking around with a hand gun, the cops are empowered to arrest you & confiscate the gun. It doesn't stop gun crime altogether but it sure slows it down.
If I met R72, I wouldn't need a gun. There are other ways to accomplish the perfect ending.

Chicago had 14 people shot on Tuesday night, a level of violence not seen on a consistent basis for more than twenty years.
In 2002, I was a substitute teacher for CPS. I'd walk to the schools from the "L" in Austin, Pilsen, Garfield Park, and Englewood. A week didn't go by when I didn't see someone (often one of our students) on the street with a gun. Fast forward 10 years and I would never walk in those neighborhoods. What breaks my heart is that the children don't have that choice.

Just read an article which said a mother just lost her youngest son, making the fourth of her five children to die by gunshot. I forget which site it was on (I think it was Yahoo) but some of the comments were beyond disgusting.
I've lived in many areas that butt up to the worst of these neighborhoods and one block can be the difference between relatively safe and war zone. The gangs generally do not go looking for trouble outside their zone. You can feel the minute you drive from a safe area to a bad one. It's creepy. I would sometimes drive through W Garfield Park from the highway to my house in Logan square because it was so quick but it was like driving through some post apocalyptic nightmare. No women or children out in the middle of the day, stores all boarded up. Only black men. No plants or grass, all grey. I would just hold my breath for five minute and avoid making eye contact. Stupid looking back but I also used to stay at my exes place in Humbolt Park, I don't know why his roommate rented the place there, they were not latino. The walk from the car to the building was scary. All night long gunshots and sirens. I finally said no more and never went back. It's not like I lived in super white neighborhoods, I mostly lived in mixed latino on the way to being gentrified neighborhoods that had a good mix of people. The Puerto Rican neighbors were great and we had fun block parties. I once lived in a semi-iffy neighborhood and waited tables until late in the morning and always hated having to park far from my house. One night I took a cab and went to the convenience store for smoke. The Guys who owned it were Albanian and always looked out for me and my roommates. As I was leaving one of them pulled me back in and pointed his gun I had never seen and two guys who had their own guns whose backs were to the wall waiting to rob me. They escorted me home. Should have bought them something nice but I was too young to think about it. Still, I love Chicago even though this part makes me sad. You don't see or think about it though unless you live in a bad area.
