Mitt Romney Funded Abortion Company For Personal Profit At Bain Capital
Earlier this year, Mitt Romney nearly landed in a politically perilous controversy when the Huffington Post reported that in 1999 the GOP presidential candidate had been part of an investment group that invested $75 million in Stericycle, a medical-waste disposal firm that has been attacked by anti-abortion groups for disposing aborted fetuses collected from family planning clinics. Coming during the heat of the GOP primaries, as Romney tried to sell South Carolina Republicans on his pro-life bona fides, the revelation had the potential to damage the candidate's reputation among values voters already suspicious of his shifting position on abortion.
But Bain Capital, the private equity firm Romney founded, tamped down the controversy. The company said Romney left the firm in February 1999 to run the troubled 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City and likely had nothing to with the deal. The matter never became a campaign issue. But documents filed by Bain and Stericycle with the Securities and Exchange Commission—and obtained by Mother Jones—list Romney as an active participant in the investment. And this deal helped Stericycle, a company with a poor safety record, grow, while yielding tens of millions of dollars in profits for Romney and his partners. The documents—one of which was signed by Romney—also contradict the official account of Romney's exit from Bain.

Now, now, it's not an "abortion company." Those exist only in the imagination of Randall Terry. The fact is that our society does not have a tradition of treating the remains of aborted or miscarried embryos and fetuses the same way we do those of people after they're born (and I'm not even sure all stillborn infants are given funerals and interred or cremated the way an older child would.) I don't think it would make us more humane if we did.
Republican hypocrisy? Do tell!
This guy would be sucking out fetuses with a straw if it meant a dollar in his pocket.
He does what is financially/politically beneficial to himself. He has no integrity and believes in nothing but personal gain.
I can understand people not liking Obama, but to actually be a supporter of Mitt because you believe in him... well, you'd have to be pretty stupid.
I hope you're right R1, and Randall Terry becomes the hoist of his own petard.
HOWever... Stericycle is just a medical waste company. Just about every doctor's office and many hospitals use them. They do not have jack shit to do with abortions. I suspect this will really come off as the Dems grasping at straws to anyone who isn't a retarded flyover fundamentalist loonie.
But I can hope for the best anyway.
he's a slimeball
Dobn't expect AC to talk about his partner tho. He's clear he doesn't want that disclosed.
If you use some good old fashioned Republican logic though, R8, you CAN irrationally connect medical waste companies to abortion. If such companies didn't exist or permit aborted fetuses into their facilities, then there would be no abortion.
See how that works? If it was Obama investing in a company like this, you better believe Fox News would be running a story about it every 5 minutes. That's when they're not still searching for his birth certificate.
[quote]Stericycle is just a medical waste company.
How dare you suggest that sacred human lives are "waste"! (You know that's what they'd say if the shoe was on the other foot.)
R8, Dubya trotted out "snowflake" babies as a means to end stem cell research, so don't tell me if this was Obama profiting from a company dealing in medical waste, they wouldn't scream about dead babies.
They consider single cells in petri dishes to be "life," so chances are that some of that waste included stem cells.
Yes, R11 & R13, hence the "to anyone who isn't a retarded flyover fundamentalist loonie" comment.
They won't scream about it because it's Romney, unless they are the truly fringe loons, and those people already hate him because he's Mormon.
Agreed if the shoe were on the other foot they would all be screaming from the rooftops. I just think it's a pathetic attempt on Mother Jones part. It's a non-story, and most people will see through this immediately.
There has to be some really dirty shit on Romney somewhere that can be dug up. Then again, look at Bush and what he got away with. Romney is a fucking Boy Scout compared to Bush and Cheney. I still think Cheney is a satan worshipper who sleeps hanging upside down all day.
Romney IS NOT a boy scout compared to Bush and Cheney R14. You have not been following the hundreds of scandals associated with Willard Mitt Romney.
Well maybe you should list them seeing as you're so well informed R15.
I haven't heard anything except he strapped his dog to the roof and he ran a company that engaged in predatory practices for profit.
Bad enough, but not quite the same as faking a reason to start a war to get their hairy hands on more oil profits, now is it?
Mormons have no problem with hypocrisy for profit. They lent much of the money to develop the Las Vegas strip.
When Romney was on the Board of Directors of Damon Corp., they engaged in one of the largest Medicare fraud schemes in history. He sold the company for a big profit. When this was pointed out when he ran for Governor, he claimed he had blown the whistle on the fraud, which was obviously lie and immediately contradicted by the FBI. Why was it obviously a lie? Because he sold out at a profit, which defrauded the purchaser of the company. So either he did blow the whistle, in which case he defrauded Corning, which bought the company; or he didn't blow the whistle, which is obviously the truth, in which case he defrauded the government.
Romney ran Dade International personally, right down to fining people who were late for meetings. When Bain wanted out of the company but the other owners did not, Bain simply stole the money lent the company for its operations and deserted. The company went bankrupt and Bain (and Romney) were accused of "unjust enrichment" in court. The scandal died down because the company went on to be successful, but it is clear that buying a company, and borrowing against it to pay off Bain, were Standard Operating Procedure for Romney.
So much so that when his wife sold a horse, she doped it in order to bring a higher price.
CNN wasn't talking about this at all last night. They were going on and on about how fired up the Republicans are about repealing health care law and getting rid of Obama. Romney's bullshit only gets reported on the internet and MSNBC and *maybe* the broadcast news channels, he's being protected. This story is more hypocrisy and it should be ALL OVER the news now.
Bain also is a partner in The Weather Channel, which just bought Weather Underground.
Republiturds only want one thing; complete control. Doesn't matter if 50% of the nation completely disagrees with their insidious philosophies, they want it all...no negotiation, no freedom, no working class, no regulation, no taxes, no infrastructure, no more America, ...the master plan is to enslave the have-nots and let everything be owned by corporations, prison profit, roadway profit, everything corporate and controlled by the 1% of the 1%.
Ronnie Reagan was the first puppet of this plan, you suckers fell for the bait and the dominos are still being aligned.
Be careful, wing-nuts, if you get what you wish for... you go down the toilet too.
[quote]Aaaand he's done.
Whether Romeny wins or loses, this story will have fuck all to do with it.
Democrats (of which I'm one) lack the talent for making a mountain of a molehill. The Republicans have been known to do it well with both fact and fiction; the Democrats, however, never make any headway at this game.
Bai Ling's on the Roof!
Of Mitt's Car!
True, R24, but they won't believe you.
I posted on another thread that you have to know Mormons to appreciate this story. They have no problem with lying and manipulating for their own gain. I'm not exaggerating when I tell you: they believe in anything for the sake of their success.
Shouldn't this kill Romney with the social conservative vote?
R30, it would if it were reported and discussed more in the media, so far they're letting him slide AGAIN.
Everyone e-mail and phone your Democratic representatives and demand that the DNC release an ad about this.
That will get the word out.
He's toast. Shows him to be an abortion profiteer AND a liar.
But isn't he only toast if the news is actually REPORTED, R33?
The Obama Team needs to keep talking about this and everyone else should do what R32 suggests.
