"A man loves the meat in his youth that he cannot endure in his age." - William Shakespeare
- Somebody has SAW on the brain. R47, I'm surprised you were able to limit yourself to just ten tracks. I'm not being critical - I'm a fan too.
For R26, you might be right, but you never know. For some people hearing the phrase "80's music" quickly brings to mind the records that get played often on throw-back radio (Hungry Like the Wolf, Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, You Spin Me Round, Come On Eileen, West End Girls, etc.). For other people that listen to a different or a more extensive collection of older music, those aren't necessarily the first things that pop to mind.
Neither is right or wrong, it's just different exposure levels that people have.
It's nice to see the diversity of songs and artists and genres represented here on the thread. It's kind of interesting, but I'm not sure there is anything to be learned here.

- Oh, but r91, sweetheart: I can easily name another ten Madonna songs just from 1983 - 87! Prince cannot even begin to touch M's body of great songs:
Holiday - Madonna
Papa Don't Preach - Madonna
Into the Groove - Madonna
Lucky Star - Madonna
True Blue - Madonna
Causing a Commotion - Madonna
Angel - Madonna
La Isla Bonita - Madonna
Crazy For You - Madonna
Gambler - Madonna
Prince: over by 1992. Madonna: kicking butt well into the 2000s.
- [quote]Prince cannot even begin to touch M's body of great songs:
This statement makes you, R96, MORE than ready for the funny farm. Prince is a genius with a body of work unparalleled by many.
- Madonna rarely/never wrote her own music. All her hits were from Shep Pettibone or Jellybean Benitez. So they are not Madonnas songs, only sung by Madonna.
Prince, on the other hand wrote ALL his own music and played all the instruments. So they are actually his songs.
Having said that, Madonna is still somewhat supportive of the Gay community, where as Prince fried his own brain, joined an anti-gay cult and now spews out Jesus crap all day.
So between the 2, Madonna gets the prize, but, she still did not write her own hits.
- [quote]Madonna is still somewhat supportive of the Gay community, where as Prince fried his own brain, joined an anti-gay cult and now spews out Jesus crap all day.
That's a weak argument. It doesn't matter if Prince quit the biz and became a priest, his music and back catalogue still stand as a great body of work. The song "Purple Rain" alone trumps not only anything by Madonna, but many of his contemporaries as well.
- In your opinion, r99.
In mine, Like a Prayer trumps Purple Rain, even though that is a great song as well.
In any case, Madonna did co-write almost all her songs - she has a characteristic song structure that is apparent in every song of hers, regardless of the co-writer. Only a musical fool would (willfully) ignore this.
If you want to insist that 'other people wrote all her hits' at least point to Stephen Bray or Patrick Leonard.
Jellybean only produced some of her early hits, but he never actually penned any of them. Quite some expert you are!
Finally, Prince completely lost his gift as a songwriter in the early 1990s - and he never recaptured it. His output post-1992 is uniformly WEAK.
Madonna went from strength to strenght for a good 20 years, until she finally lost her vision (i.e. current Madonna).

- Bloody hell. I just named 80 songs from the 10s off the top of my head. Most of them I introduced. It must be the heat. Mine.
Helen%20Lawson
- The fact that R100 is arguing that Madonna is more of a musical genius than Prince (of all people) really just negates anything he has to say. It's okay to be a fangurl, but that is just ridiculous. Comparing "Like a Prayer" (which is a good pop song) to the sweeping magnum opus that is "Purple Rain" is akin to saying Poison's "Talk Dirty To Me" is on the same wavelength as Aerosmith's "Dream On".

- R110, unless you are referring to some remakes, Carly Simon's "You're So Vain" was 1972 and Kate Bush's "Wuthering Heights" was 1978.
Given the amount of responses on here, I'm surprised that hasn't happened more often. If people really are rifling off the songs that first come to mind, I'd think a few more might miss the decade by a bit.

- I see lots of straight-oriented music on here. I think alot of you are betraying yourselves by listening to that homophobic, racist, misogynistic, no talent dreck. You're doing yourselves a real dis-service. We need to support gay artists and gay-supporting artists. They may be "stereotypical" by they are OURS for a reason (because they support and love us). Barbra, Bette, Wham, Cher, Madonna, George Michael, Paul Lekakis, Sylvester, Cyndi Lauper... and the list goes on. Think about it.

- R216
Respectfully, I do not find any of the artists you mentioned appealing. Their music does nothing for me. I like edgier stuff. I do not base the music I listen to upon sexual orientation, race or political beliefs of the artists. I listen to what appeals to me. If I like the Beastie Boys, Ministry, and Anthrax, it's because the music appeals to me (where Bette Midler does not). Open YOUR mind, dude.

I also remember people like New Kids on the Block, Mariah Carey and Kylie Minogue.
It will be interesting to analyze people's lists, to pinpoint their age and personality. I will admit as an afternote that I google imaged 80s singers to try to remember Kylie Minogue's name, then saw Madonna and felt embarrassed I hadn't included her as my first subconscious memory.

- R266 I loved all those movies and all of those songs. One of my favorite movie songs of the '80s was 'He's Back (The Man Behind The Mask)' by Alice Cooper. It was the theme to Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives. Really dance-oriented & fun. Another great movie song was 'Goonies R Good Enough' from 'The Goonies' by Cyndi Lauper. Also my fave movie song of the '80s, 'View To A Kill' by Duran Duran from the James Bond movie of the same name. Such a fun decade.

- How big were R.E.M. in the 80s R311? Bigger than The Smiths?
In the UK R.E.M. were majorly acclaimed but a non-charting cult and were obviously overshadowed by their home counterparts.
They didn't pick up till they went to Warners. I know in the US they were college radio favourites along with stuff like The Replacements.
I wish R.E.M. had quit a bit earlier, but then U2 are still going.

- Are we allowed to post our top 10 singles of the 80s? Some of these seem more like all time faves. I think I will anyway. :)
- Most of the '80s were terrible for me. I was living in the Castro in San Francisco and life was wonderful until mid-1981, when my first friend got sick with the plague. From then on I watched people dying and lost many, many friends and acquaintances. I will name the first songs that come to mind from the year 1980. The plague was technically out there, but ignorance was bliss.

- Man, you all have crappy taste.
- I am on my long-needed two-week vacation and spent last week transferring a ton of old '80s videotapes to digital. I had not watched the tapes in two decades. I have spent this morning watching a video from my third year of college, March 1986, Spring Break at South Padre Island, TX. These were the main songs
I remember playing in the background of various shots. Damn, I had forgotten how thin and "in shape" everyone was back then. Sooo many hot guys. Ahh, the memories...

- R398 It just goes to prove my point that most songs that hit #1 on the Billboard Charts are #2. It seems like the worst songs rise to the top. It's always been that way. Most of the best songs of the '80s did not hit #1, some didn't even hit the top 10, 20 or 30. A few didn't even make the hot 100.

We like A LOT of the same songs, R489! Damn, I forgot how much I loved "Let The Music Play", "99 Red Balloons", "Buffalo Stance".... Then I'm reminded of "Neutron Dance", The Go Go's,The Time, Queen, A-ha and on and on, shit! I love this thread but hate it at the same time because I can't stop listening to these damn songs.
I found a good version of "Let The Music Play" on YT in case anybody else is as addicted to it as I am!

- R505 I'll hold 'em, you slap 'em. Then we'll switch places. I hate "We are the World" with the intensity of ten suns. I always found the song irritating as hell. In 1985, I would leave one of my TV's on MTV all day long on the weekends. As soon as I would hear that cheesy video coming on, I would run in and change the channel. If I chose a Top Ten Worst Songs of the 1980's list, that would be in the Top 5. Yuck!

I never looked the part (no long hair, dirty clothes, denim jackets, earrings, tattoos), but I was heavy into hard music. I liked other things too, but the more metallic stuff really got my cock rock hard. On this thread, it's nice to see that there were other gay rockers back then, besides my buddies and me.
