Apple Announces New MacBook Pro - Starting at $2200

No optical drive, no ethernet but a Retina screen, whatever that is. Is this the Apple for the 1%ers? Because, spec wise, it's grossly over-priced.

Who uses an optical drive. The cloud is where it's at. Are you still longing for your floppy to go with that Commodore on your desk? Ethenet? Get with the program. Wifi is where it's at. That is why it's so thin. This thing blows the competition out of the water. It is great. Another winner from Apple. First iPod, then iPhone, then iPad now the MacBook. No wonder Apple is the best!!!!

They have both firewire 800 and ethernet adaptors to plug into one or both of the thunderbolt ports, but I don't know why anyone would buy a laptop of any kind at this point unless you're constantly traveling. If you need to do just basic web shit, tablets are fine and if you need to do heavy graphics works uh well don't look to the Mac Pro.
The Retina display is a big deal. Pixels simply aren't visible under most any condition. Hyper real. Simply too expensive for me, however.

I own an iPad and iPhone but Mac's are shit.
Way overpriced, and in typical Apple fashion it only allows you to do things the way Apple want$ you to.

I'm a Mac user, but I think it's ridiculous to pretend the Retina laptop is a Pro machine when you can't even update the RAM. Cook is destroying the company. These were the most underwhelming updates in a decade from the company.
R14, no. This was an "update" of their entire laptop line, the line that should be retired. Laptops cannot do the real work desktops are needed for and laptops aren't needed anymore for simple internet fuckery.

Hardcore Mac-lover here, too. I'm also disappointed with the direction they're going with this. You simply can't call a computer a MacBook "Pro" if it doesn't include features that working professionals need. I do a lot of work as a recording engineer. Yes, I burn a lot of CDs at home, but I also do most of my recording work on-location. If I were to buy this new computer, I'd have to add an external CD burner to my equipment list. Not being able to upgrade RAM or hard drives is a big drawback for me, too. I've had two Apple computers so far, and as my needs outgrew the computer's capabilities, I've upgraded the RAM and the hard drive in both. From what it looks like, my 2011 17-inch MachBook Pro might be the last 17-incer they make... and the last "Pro" they make.

The retina display and the solid state memory make this the Rolls Royce of computers. Not for everyone, but those who need it (people working with graphics) or who want it as a status symbol will pay. Apple will sell a lot of them. And they did not discontinue the current 15" Macbook Pro, so there is an alternative for those who don't want to pay for the cutting edge.
R27? I owned a MP Pro. I also own the rest of the line-up. If I'm paying that much money for a laptop, shouldn't I be able to pick up wifi in my home even after a year of use? It was a nightmare (relatively-speaking). Out of no where, it just stopped picking up the signal even if I was a foot away from the modem. And the apple store was of no help/ BTW, you're the idiot if you're that obsessed with a product that you seem to think simply owning one is tantamount to splitting the atom. People are just looking at porn or Facebook/Twitter anyway, so let's not pretend computers in general aren't being used by most to just fuck around.

Opinions are like assholes. Everybody's got one. I have had a MacBook Pro for about a year (took many years to get me to switch) and it is by FAR a superior computer in almost every respect. Note, I said ALMOST. But, then again, its just my opinion. Threads like this never convince anyone of anything. Just people arguing with themselves.
Forget the MMP, the real news is that the Macbook Airs have gotten both significant upgrades and a price drop. I paid a premium to max out my 11" MBA last summer: i7 processor, 256MB solid state hard drive, 4GB ram. Now I could get all that standard, and more (like USB3 ports) for less money. It's a fantastic machine, and for me, a more versatile and productive alternative to a tablet. See link below for comparison between 2011 and 2012 models.

Agreed R41. I'm going to replace my current laptop with an iMac when it dies. I was hoping the new iMacs were coming out soon, but now the speculation is next year. I hope my current computer makes it. I'm not sure I'll be able to load Mountain Lion. It was the oldest model that could run Lion.
For the iPad converts: do you type as productively on an iPad as on a keyboard? I work with word documents and spreadsheets a lot, and just don't see how an iPad can manage those effectively. Do you use a bluetooth keyboard or have you adjusted?
You can use a keyboard with an iPad, R43, and run a version of iWorks, but it really isn't designed for people who create or edit a lot of content. It's really for viewing content.
The thing about using the Bluetooth keyboard is that you still to keep reaching out to touch the screen, since there's no other pointing device than your finger. That gets old; you might as well already be touching the screen to use the virtual keyboard.

For the price of just one MacBook Pro, you can buy three laptops running Windows and use the other two for parts in due time! How's that for a deal? I'm getting an iMac at work - my plan was to get a Macbook Air to complement (out of my own pocket). But now the MacBook Pro is thinner would this be better? I'm not sure what to opt for. It seems remarkably expensive!!
Thanks, R44/R45. I use my 11' Macbook Air for just about everything now. I only use an external monitor when I need to view large spreadsheets side-by-side. Its dimensions aren't that different from an iPad, but the keyboard and greater storage make a real difference with conventional productivity applications. I hear a lot of people say they've replaced their laptops with tablets, but I don't really see how I'd do that. To tie this in with the current thread, I've used 13" Macbook Pros in the past, but the MBP's weight compared to the MBA is ridiculous.
I think posts like R1 are troll posts. He may very well be a Mac enthusiast and really like their products, but clearly he knows how annoyed people get my the pseudo "true believer" posts. I always laugh at posts like R1.
I have just about every apple product. iMac, Macbook Air, iPad, iPhone, and an iPod. But for all of those things, you pick your favorite that you use most and sort of stick with that. I really use my iMac and iPhone most of the time. I prefer my iMac over all of them. I guess, despite having all these toys, I've found that I am more of a desktop person, so I can't really gush over the latest Macbook Pro. I think this new Macbook Pro is somewhat pushing it price wise, and I don't really see anything about it that warrants such a huge jump in price. R43, I don't really see the iPad as completely replacing a laptop or desktop. It's definitely more for internet surfing - and it's great for that, but not much else IMO.
The iPad is fun, but useless for creating text or graphics.

Totally over priced. For the person saying the cloud is where it is at is clueless. I would never store presonal information on the cloud. Ethernet is a protocal and can be either wireless or wired, lol.
I like my iPad well enough, especially because it's so portable. Tablets, whether they're Apple products or not, are the best thing to happen to people on airplanes - the time goes by so much faster. Great for traveling and long flights. I prefer my Macbook at home, though, because I watch almost everything online instead of on TV and I like the bigger screen.
