Tommy was barely necessary in the series. McKeon's Tommy was this kinda dull kid and and when I remember the show, I carely remember Tommy at all. Alfred Lutter as Tommy in the film, however, was a force of nature. He played Tommy in the pilot and then got too big.

I was 10 when the showed premiered and, yes, I developed a serious crush on Tommy. Definitely one of my first indicators that I was "different." Well, that and dressing in a flannel bathrobe and running down the hill next to our house pretending I was Laura Ingalls.
