A perfect encapsulation of why our legal and educational systems need to be replaced by radical alternatives- returning them to the local level would be a good start.
A judge threw a 17-year-old 11th grade honor student from Willis High School in jail after she missed school again ... Diane Tran, a 17-year-old honor student in Texas, was forced to spend the night in jail last week after missing too many classes, KHOU-11's Sherry Williams reports. The Willis High School junior, who helps support two siblings, has both a full time and part-time job. She said that she's often too tired to go to school. "She goes from job to job from school," Devin Hill, one of Tran's classmates, told KHOU-11. "She stays up until 7:00 in the morning doing her homework." In an interview with KHOU-11, Tran said she takes AP Spanish, college level algebra and dual credit English and history courses. Her parents divorced and no longer live near her, so she lives with the family that owns the wedding venue where she works on weekends. – Huffington Post

Tell that to a black person living in Alabama. You're an idiot.
Ain't that something - everything but the bloodhounds snapping at her rear end.
But publick sckoolses edumacateded me!
They wood never due this to an honer studint!
Libertarisn spouting off again...
What should happen to the judge?
Seems like the solution was local, actually.
Someone should check if the judge has any friends who operate privatized juvenile facilities. Nice payment for the judge's friends anytime a 15-year-old goes to the clink for mocking a teacher on Facebook, smoking a cigarette, talking in class...
This is old news OP
I hope that judge feels like an ass. Why did the parents leave her there though?
Just another sign of the police state. But since I'm a crazy libertarian, my opinion is null.
Public skooolsss are just torture unless you are an average, conformist, normal kid. Anyone outside the small spectrum is in hell- and that's 80% of the kids.
Public schools should be abolished.
[quote]Public schools should be abolished
And replaced with what? Or is having a nation populated with people who cant read or write something that appeals to you?
Don't be a dolt, R10
If there was no "public government school" would YOU let YOUR kid run wild, or would you seek to educate him or her?
Do you think, in the absence of "public government school", that multiple entreprenuers would seek to provide competent and inexpensive education, by multiple methods- in home, in neighborhood "one room" schools, online, or in a hundred ways we can't imagine because the government stifles any attempt to horn in on their turf?
Do you think that childless people, or wealthy people, would be too ignorant to recognize the benefits of an educated populace, and offer to volunteer time and money to help their neighbors?
If you believe these things is it because a hundred years of being able to say "oh, the government will take care of it, I pay my taxes" has made them resentful, and disconnected, and dismissive?
What about the people who can't afford to pay for the education provided by such entrepeneurs? The highest quality education would probably be the most expensive, available only to those with means. Sounds like a recipe for maintaining and concentrating privilege to me.
R11 In case you havent noticed, the government is not doing anything to stifle the growth of private schools. If anything its the opposite as the rise of charter schools and for profit private schools has increased in recent years. So making a claim that the government is discouraging this when that is not true does not really help your argument. You should stick to facts, because once it is revealed you dont know what you are talking about, then everything you say will be disregarded.
Then why not offer a tax credit equal to a year of education to each parent that removes a child from school?
At $6-12,000 a year, they could afford great private schools.
"returning them to the local level would be a good start."
"Do you think that childless people, or wealthy people, would be too ignorant to recognize the benefits of an educated populace, and offer to volunteer time and money to help their neighbors?"
ROFLMAO. Most people only care about themselves.
"that multiple entreprenuers would seek to provide competent and inexpensive education, by multiple methods"
Inexpensive? So people can't go to free schools any more?
"But publick sckoolses edumacateded me!"
I bet you love homeskooling.
They should put this girl's parents in jail for not supporting her. There is no reason for a high school student needs to be working full time.
R14 So you want tax payers to pay for the private school education of other peoples children? Tax dollars payed to a school with the primary mission of generating a profit. Thats the libertarian solution? Really? If you're giving a tax credit, you have to make up for that lost revenue somewhere. Where does that money come from? And these private schools have no accountability to the people who are actually funding them. So we could get stuck footing the bill so some asshole's kid can learn Noah's flood carved the Grand Canyon from a "teacher" with no accreditation.
Yea, that sounds like a swell idea.
Do you like private prisons too, libertarian?
Public schools receive state funds based upon their average daily attendance. If a student doesn't show up, the school doesn't get paid. That she is an honor student who likely knows the work better than 99% of her classmates accounts for nothing at all. In this case (and most others) follow the money.
Payed? Really? You're going to take me to task about how incompetent publick skools really are and use the word "payed" to mean "paid"?
"[R14] So you want tax payers to pay for the private school education of other peoples children?"
The taxpayers are already paying for every child to go to publick skool, even if they are childless. If the publick skools cost $10,000 per year, per kid (an average) then giving a parent 75% of that to privately educate them would be a bonus to the publick skools. But they fight tooth and nail to stop this. It's called an entrenched Bureacracy. Look it up. They get paid per student under their lockdown, and allowing parents freedom would mean a mass exodus.
"Tax dollars payed(sic) to a school with the primary mission of generating a profit."
Well, that is better than a non-profit like publick skool where they learn nothing. Look at some of the Kaplan Academy records. They publish them often. These kids learn faster, at a lower cost, than any publick skool. Even Catholic schools and homeschoolers beat all but the best publick schools.
"Thats the libertarian solution? Really? If you're giving a tax credit, you have to make up for that lost revenue somewhere."
Ahhhh, the "Lost Revenue" route. It's lost revenue to the government. It's productive revenue to the private sector. Stolen revenue is more appropriate.
"Where does that money come from?"
From the revenue stolen from the taxpayers. Give it back. It was theirs to begin with!
"And these private schools have no accountability to the people who are actually funding them."
Yes, they are accountable to the people who pay for their children to attend. You really are that stupid. You must be a teacher at a publick skool.
" So we could get stuck footing the bill so some asshole's kid can learn Noah's flood carved the Grand Canyon from a "teacher" with no accreditation."
And that is your business? Why don't you close down the churches, or better yet the economics skool at Harvard, Yale and Princeton. They teach bullshit far worse than saying the earth is 6,000 years old. At least a kid who is taught that the earth is just 6,000 years old is smart enough to figure out basic economics, unlike graduates of those skools.
It's official. Libertarians are even more ignorant and vile than Republicans.
No, since they, like GE, GM, ADM, etc. aren't "private" they are "private/public" partnerships. AKA fascist.
It gives cops an incentive to throw people in jail, prosecutors incentive to suppress evidence (so they can get nice steak dinners and forfeited property from the people they pull over) and judges learn to look the other way.
No, private prisons are just another facet of the the fascist police state.
[quote]Yes, they are accountable to the people who pay for their children to attend. You really are that stupid.
If the people who are paying for that school are doing it with tax credits, then EVERYONE who pays taxes are funding that school. But the school is not accountable to the people who are in reality, funding it. Not very hard to figure out. I could call you stupid, but you see, I dont need to put you down to feel good. My ego is not that weak.
Harvard, Yale and Princeton are private schools and attendance there is not compulsory. The same goes with church. That was a terrible analogy and really damaged any points you are trying to make.
And since when are Libertarians all cool with shutting down private institutions?
If this girl needs to work 2 jobs to support her family, why doesn't she just get a GED? She's smart enough to pass the test. If her family is so impoverished that she must work so much, she's obviously not going to go to college. She can't afford time off work to do library research and write papers for college. So quit school and get a GED.
Why must she support herself and two siblings? She's not an adult. She didn't win custody of the children in her parents' divorce.
Something's fishy. Two living parents, but a child is being made to financially support their children? I call bullshit.
I bet tne wedding shop owners live in a better school district and Miss Tran is pretending to live with them while she really lives with one of her parents and has a long morning commute that she can't always manage. Hence the story about the two jobs.
I'm with R24. Something doesn't seem right about this. Ive worked for business where we hired minors. There are very strict laws about how many hours they can work and how late they can work.
"If the people who are paying for that school are doing it with tax credits, then EVERYONE who pays taxes are funding that school"
Publick Government Skools are paid for by property taxes. That means people with no kids, and retirees, and us homos, are paying for these prison camps.
So why not let the parents choose where to send their kids?
Do you want everyone dumbed down to your level?
There is no way a kid can work a full time job (minimum 37.5 hours a week) and a part time job AND go to high school.
And where is she getting a full time job nowadays? Adults with families can't find full time employment, but a 17 year old high school kid can?
More gruel, . . . Please.
So [bold]THAT[/bold] is why our Idiot Libertarian Troll(TM) is such an incoherent, offensive mess - he's home-schooled!
Now it all makes sense.
Is your mother the one who taught you your clinically insane definitions of "fascism" and "socialism"?
