R53, you are clearly unfamiliar with the protocol for the Met Ball. As chairman of the event, Anna has final veto over who is invited - which is why the Kardashians have always been omitted from the guest list. Additionally, the invitees must be sponsored by a designer - as the red carpet photos always indicate which designer an attendee is wearing. Given the nature of the event, and the size of the space, it is rare for spouses to attend, unless both of them are celebrities (this year, that included Carmelo and Lalah Anthony and Amy Poehler and Will Arnett).
As you can from all the YouTube clips of them arriving on the red carpet, there isn't a spouse or significant other in sight - they came "stag" as it were because only they were invited.
