- Melancholia (seen seven times and I own the DVD) is a great film, and Dunst really is wonderful. Seeing her repeatedly in the role, one notices a subtle, highly detailed and quietly emotional performance that is miles beyond what her contemporaries seem to be able or want to do. Von Trier deserves a lot credit, he photographs her so she is stunningly beautiful in many scenes, but finally she had to make the leap into a very strange, potentially alienating role, and the results are suitably upsetting when they should be, and finally, very moving.
