- Live in NY and considering a job in NYC? Wow, is your life ready for that kind of upheaval?
- If you are in NY and considering a job in NYC what the fuck does Minneapolis have to do with anything?
- What the hell is MSP? I think you should not consider NYC. You'll fail here.
- OP, I think you better XYZ, little mister!
- You'll spend all your money and time commuting from NYC to MSP...
- You're gonna make it after all!

little boring, but if you are a couple it's great.
And Michelle Bachman lives there. Enuf said.

- Minnianoplace is pretty dull. No shortage of over the top good looking guys, but they are genuine pussy hounds. Madison, Wi is the closest gay destination.
- We have a lot of 'straight acting" gays here, love it!

- But, can you turn the world on with your smile?
- It is a horrible place. A cold hell. The lack of culture shock will kill you.
To go from NYC to Minneapolis is a form of torture I would wish on very few.
- R10 doesn't know what she's talking about.
OP, a few things to keep in mind:
1.) There aren't really gay ghettos in the Twin Cities, at least not to the extent there are in other cities. The gays have kind of spread themselves throughout the two metros and first-ring suburbs. I think I just read that Golden Valley is now the gayest suburb, via the census numbers.
2.) You'll probably want a car. The bus system is not the greatest and there is light rail, but it's very limited right now.
3.) The cost of living is much lower and you'll notice that right away. But it will take time to make friends, as Minnesotans aren't always open to outsiders.
4.) Assuming you stay within the first-ring suburbs and metro areas, you'll find people are very liberal and gay friendly. It's harder once you get into the outer suburbs and outstate, but even among republicans, there is more of a "live and let live" attitude than you find in other rural areas of the USA.
- If you have money, buy or rent near the lakes. They're amazing centers of activity in the warmer months and they look gorgeous in the winter.
Uptown is probably a little too active for you if you're in your forties. Very noisy.
TONS of gays in the Twin Cities. TONS. And some of the hottest college guys in the country at U of M.

- Stay in NYC you fool. I may consider SF over NYC, but no ohter place in US comes close
- I agree with R16. Going from the Northeast to Minneapolis is hell! Complete culture shock and they're unfriendly to newbies, particularly if you're single. Most socializing is family-oriented and they all take off for their lake house on the weekends. If you're lucky, you'll see the road show of Evita about 5 years from now and eat a lot of hot dishes and jello salads.
- R20, sounds great!

- Guys in Minn/St. Paul are hotter and nicer than ones in overrated Chicago.
- 119 North Wetherly is a lovely building to check out op.
The studios vary from large sunken rooms with a full kitchen and walkin closet to tiny, funky little attic rooms with a hot plate.

- Please #20, have u ever been to Mpls? No jello or hot dishes on the menu and our theatre is world-class. Our winters are more bearable also with global warming. Try it out. The only thing is that it's not a 24 hour city, so it won't be as exciting as NYC.

- OP, I moved there from Los Angeles last summer. And now I'm moving OUT. Most of the (few) friends you make will be from other states because the people from Minnesota don't usually welcome outsiders. The single scene is depressing. There is very little going on...though the people there LOVE to think they live in a world-class city. THEY DON'T. It's white as fuck (except for the Somalis, which there are tons, and black trash from Chicago on the welfare hunt) and small-minded. We had a mild winter this year but I've been told that rare. If you have to move there then I agree with the others that "The Lakes" is the best thing about the city so focus your life around there if you can. And good luck.
- Did someone say Evita??? Oooh my fave!

- OP, I moved from NY to MInneapolis in my early forties a few years ago. For the first two months I was shocked and thought I made a big mistake. The skyways made me feel like I was living at an airport. Everything closed early (and opens early-good midwestern, early to bed, early to...)
But eventually I became really enamored of Minni. I would live downtown. THere are great loft buildings and lux condos that I could never afford to live in in NY. YOu'll find a lot of people from other parts of the country that have relocated there. And they tend to be a little more open to new friends. The life-long minnesotans aren't cold, they just seem to know everyone and are a little more set in their ways. And the gay crowd is far less age-ist than in other cities.
Good luck

This is true. If you don't believe it, go to a HS wrestling tournament in a place like Minnetonka, Eagan, or E.P. Simply amazing.
I wish I was back there
- I thought Loring Park is a gayish neighborhood.
Minneapolis is a nice city. But, it's so provincial and there isn't much big city buzz.
There's good live music, nice museums, some great theater.
Beyond that it will really depend on what kind of person you are. If you feed off the energy of the city, I don't think Minneapolis will do it for you. But, if you are laid back, have activities and interests you can focus on, are not at a point in your life where you need the rush of going out all the time, then it might be okay.
While not any more exciting, I'd actually prefer to live in St. Paul.
Luckily, I'm from the Twin Cities, and I can go see my family, experience what I like about the area, and then leave.
- Yes, Loring Park has gay people, but I don't think it's as concentrated as it was 10 or 15 years ago. The Hennepin Lyndale wedge area is fairly gay, but also not as much as before. Too many hipsters actually. Gays are spread throughout the metro like everywhere else. No need for a ghetto.
OP, whatever you do, don't move to the area people refer to as "North Minneapolis."
- What R33 is trying to say is that North Minneapolis has black people. Indeed, it is Minneapolis' best known "hood", though it pales in comparison to bad neighborhoods areas in other cities.
- r34, it's a crime-ridden cesspool. But most of Mpls is much safer than other cities its size.
- are there gay people in Michelle Bachmann's district?
- l
http://www.youtube.com/watch%3Fv%3DwqOAL54v7iY
- A lot of hipsters and gays live in northeast Minneapolis though. There's a newish gay bar in Northeast called Lush which I haven't been to yet (I'm one of those boring coupled Mpls gays).
The Warehouse District just north of downtown has a lot of loft and apartment and has a more urban vibe, lotsa gays around there too. Hip restaurants and bars abound in this area (112, La Grassa, Black Sheep Pizza, Haute Dish, Monte Carlo, Moose and Sadies, Saffron etc).
My partner and I live on the line between two south Mpls neighborhoods: hippie/leftist Seward and more working-class Longfellow. Lots of gay homeowners in these parts but it's more "neighborhoody" and less street life. We love Minneapolis.
- I live in a big city and I visited there last year. Yes, it's not NY but it is a lovely city with lots of things to do. OP is in his 40s, I have a feeling he'll like it.
- "are there gay people in Michelle Bachmann's district?"
There are certainly gays in her district, though mostly living quietly and tending not to congregate. I don't believe there's a gay bar in her entire district. Lots of evangelical Christians and old-fashioned Catholics in her area.
- You can hang out with me! In fact, we should have a twin cities DLer get together.

- It is true that NYC can not be surpassed in many ways, but it can also be an exhausting city to live in, in more ways than one. I lived in NYC for 15 years and while there are some things I miss, there is also a lot I don't. I remember before I moved out I thought I would be "out of the loop" by not living in NYC, which I now realize is silly.
- OP, there are lots of hunky Scandinavian gays living in Minnesota. Oh, you said you were in your 40's, didn't you? Never mind....we don't like eldergays.

- r45 I saw Sven at a gay play at the Guthrie a couple of years ago.
- Sven has never "come out" per se (about his only choice in this market would be the Minneapolis newspaper anyway, and its local personalities columnist doesn't like him). But you can tell he's gay from the moon, and he does nothing to hide it. A couple years ago he posed on the cover of the local gay rag shirtless and in an apron, holding a big bowl of chocolate cake mix - complete with smudges of brown frosting on his face. It was ... attention getting.
- I visited Minneapolis last year and loved it. I think it's a great town if you are looking for a more quiet life with occasional excursions at night. Was surprised by how good-looking the people are (in a natural way). I'd live there in a heartbeat.

IF you stay out of church and lesbian pot lucks you MIGHT avoid the jello and hot dish.
However trendy gays make casseroles (hot dishes) and serve them at dinner parties but if they serve a salad they think they are hot stuff.
The Theatre is world class ONLY in the minds of the natives. There are a couple of places that get C and D list actors from NY and a lot of small theatres who think themselves cutting edge (they are not.) all in all it is a version of hell I would never return to.

First of all, it's spelled theater, cunt. Yes, there is a lot of shitty live theater here. But there is also the Guthrie, which is known and revered around the world.

- This thread is depressing. Any more DL'ers in Minneapolis? I'm moving there in August from Los Angeles. Help! Haven't lived there in 10 years. What are the best gay neighborhoods to live? I am guessing Loring Park, Uptown, Lyn Lake... please post more thoughts.
long%20time%20reader
- Those are all the best gay neighborhoods, r65. If you want to live in St. Paul, the best gay neighborhoods are Lowertown (where the artists' lofts are) and Summit Avenue/Crocus Hill, though that latter is not really close to much to do.
I don't know why you're depressed: the cities are quite lovely and have great food and theater and bookstores and a vibrant arts scene. The worst thing about the Twin Cities are the temperature extremes (it's ungodly cold in the winter and snow gets dumped like a motherfucker; summers can be very hot and humid and there are tons of mosquitos), but everything is indoors if you need it, and the lakes are gorgeous and the weather is lovely in the fall. Also avoid the suburbs, because that's where you'll discover the provincialism and the passive-aggressiveness that a lot of people don't like about Minnesota. But the Twin Cities themselves are terrific.

While MN certainly has tons of people with Scandinavian ancestry, people of German ancestry actually outnumber them.

Keep in mind: Scandinavia includes not only Sweden, Norway, and Denmark, but in its looser sense, Finland as well.

"Over 75.0% of Minnesota's residents are of Western European descent, with the largest reported ancestries being German (38.6%), Norwegian (17.0%), Irish (11.9%), and Swedish (9.8%).
Swedish and Norwegian together are 26.8%. So, if Finns, Danes and/or other Scandinavians make up another 12%, then "Scandinavians" eclipse Germans. But, they don't
