To go from NYC to Minneapolis is a form of torture I would wish on very few.

OP, a few things to keep in mind:
1.) There aren't really gay ghettos in the Twin Cities, at least not to the extent there are in other cities. The gays have kind of spread themselves throughout the two metros and first-ring suburbs. I think I just read that Golden Valley is now the gayest suburb, via the census numbers.
2.) You'll probably want a car. The bus system is not the greatest and there is light rail, but it's very limited right now.
3.) The cost of living is much lower and you'll notice that right away. But it will take time to make friends, as Minnesotans aren't always open to outsiders.
4.) Assuming you stay within the first-ring suburbs and metro areas, you'll find people are very liberal and gay friendly. It's harder once you get into the outer suburbs and outstate, but even among republicans, there is more of a "live and let live" attitude than you find in other rural areas of the USA.
- If you have money, buy or rent near the lakes. They're amazing centers of activity in the warmer months and they look gorgeous in the winter.
Uptown is probably a little too active for you if you're in your forties. Very noisy.
TONS of gays in the Twin Cities. TONS. And some of the hottest college guys in the country at U of M.

- I agree with R16. Going from the Northeast to Minneapolis is hell! Complete culture shock and they're unfriendly to newbies, particularly if you're single. Most socializing is family-oriented and they all take off for their lake house on the weekends. If you're lucky, you'll see the road show of Evita about 5 years from now and eat a lot of hot dishes and jello salads.

- OP, I moved there from Los Angeles last summer. And now I'm moving OUT. Most of the (few) friends you make will be from other states because the people from Minnesota don't usually welcome outsiders. The single scene is depressing. There is very little going on...though the people there LOVE to think they live in a world-class city. THEY DON'T. It's white as fuck (except for the Somalis, which there are tons, and black trash from Chicago on the welfare hunt) and small-minded. We had a mild winter this year but I've been told that rare. If you have to move there then I agree with the others that "The Lakes" is the best thing about the city so focus your life around there if you can. And good luck.

- OP, I moved from NY to MInneapolis in my early forties a few years ago. For the first two months I was shocked and thought I made a big mistake. The skyways made me feel like I was living at an airport. Everything closed early (and opens early-good midwestern, early to bed, early to...)
But eventually I became really enamored of Minni. I would live downtown. THere are great loft buildings and lux condos that I could never afford to live in in NY. YOu'll find a lot of people from other parts of the country that have relocated there. And they tend to be a little more open to new friends. The life-long minnesotans aren't cold, they just seem to know everyone and are a little more set in their ways. And the gay crowd is far less age-ist than in other cities.

Minneapolis is a nice city. But, it's so provincial and there isn't much big city buzz.
There's good live music, nice museums, some great theater.
Beyond that it will really depend on what kind of person you are. If you feed off the energy of the city, I don't think Minneapolis will do it for you. But, if you are laid back, have activities and interests you can focus on, are not at a point in your life where you need the rush of going out all the time, then it might be okay.
While not any more exciting, I'd actually prefer to live in St. Paul.
Luckily, I'm from the Twin Cities, and I can go see my family, experience what I like about the area, and then leave.
- Yes, Loring Park has gay people, but I don't think it's as concentrated as it was 10 or 15 years ago. The Hennepin Lyndale wedge area is fairly gay, but also not as much as before. Too many hipsters actually. Gays are spread throughout the metro like everywhere else. No need for a ghetto.
OP, whatever you do, don't move to the area people refer to as "North Minneapolis."

- A lot of hipsters and gays live in northeast Minneapolis though. There's a newish gay bar in Northeast called Lush which I haven't been to yet (I'm one of those boring coupled Mpls gays).
The Warehouse District just north of downtown has a lot of loft and apartment and has a more urban vibe, lotsa gays around there too. Hip restaurants and bars abound in this area (112, La Grassa, Black Sheep Pizza, Haute Dish, Monte Carlo, Moose and Sadies, Saffron etc).
My partner and I live on the line between two south Mpls neighborhoods: hippie/leftist Seward and more working-class Longfellow. Lots of gay homeowners in these parts but it's more "neighborhoody" and less street life. We love Minneapolis.

- Those are all the best gay neighborhoods, r65. If you want to live in St. Paul, the best gay neighborhoods are Lowertown (where the artists' lofts are) and Summit Avenue/Crocus Hill, though that latter is not really close to much to do.
I don't know why you're depressed: the cities are quite lovely and have great food and theater and bookstores and a vibrant arts scene. The worst thing about the Twin Cities are the temperature extremes (it's ungodly cold in the winter and snow gets dumped like a motherfucker; summers can be very hot and humid and there are tons of mosquitos), but everything is indoors if you need it, and the lakes are gorgeous and the weather is lovely in the fall. Also avoid the suburbs, because that's where you'll discover the provincialism and the passive-aggressiveness that a lot of people don't like about Minnesota. But the Twin Cities themselves are terrific.
