I love Bruce LaBruce so much more than Van Sant. I love the fact that Bruce came up in the punk rock scene as a zine editor, and went on to make super 8 movies that were truly underground. I liked that his mission was to confront punk rockers with their homophobia, and the mainstream gay media with their acquisitional consumerist bullshit. He seems genuinely transgressive.
Van Sant strikes me as in the "transgressive chic" circle with such group-approved names as Dennis Cooper and Mary Gaitskill. They were all tricked by that chick pretending to be JT LeRoy.
So what exactly are these stories about Gus? I love the film Milk, but it was done by a pedo?

Very true. Van Sant is a famous successful director who has won awards...Bruce is more edgy and he's bald, where Gus has a full head of hair. It makes a difference.
While respect is a bit far for me to have for anyone, especially someone who "directed" a shot-by-shot remake of "Psycho", Van Sant is quite a good director and recognized the beauty of The Damon Butt by lingering on it and framing it beautiful in "Gerry". "Gerry" is almost a minimal sonnet in film to The Damon Butt.

I live in the Portland (Oregon) area, and I think it is interesting the reputation Gus Van Sant has here as apposed to his national view. I know, he is artsy and his movies are hit or miss with most people, but that isn't the thing I really take issue with. I personally have really enjoyed some of his films.
In stark contrast, however, in the Portland area he is known as a pretty big skeez. He throws parties and sleeps with copious amounts of young gay men looking to get their break into acting. It is common knowledge that he subscribes to "casting couch" logic, and I just think it is interesting / disgusting that this hasn't really been brought to the main stream light.
I am not saying everyone my never enjoy one of his features again, I think Milk looks very compelling and many people really enjoy his style, however, he is no moral compass. It is like Wal-Mart logic, sure most companies use similar practices, but how comfortable should you be standing behind a company that does it so very brazenly?
More so than anything, I am just very upset that he is out there representing gay men: though he may be a compelling director, he as a person is foul, and I for one think that makes him pretty useless as a human.
Other than Michael Parker and Scott Green...he slept with when they were teens (I assume), do we know who he has slept with? Scott and Mike were both rent boys, so why wouldn't he sleep with them?
