Hollywood's Confirmed Bachelors and Old Maid Spinsters
Those of course are old-fashioned terms, but the Leonardo DiCaprio (born 1974) thread got me to thinking which current stars "of a certain age" have never been married.
Dana Delaney (born 1956) and Matt Dillon (born 1964) are the 2 names that come immediately to mind.
I know that Hamm and Pacino meet the criteria in not being married, but Pacino has kids I think and wasn't he with Beverly D'Angelo for a long time. And Hamm has been with his gf for awhile. I think of confirmed bachelor as a euphemism for most likely gay without kids. The others so far seem to fit. Pacino and Hamm seem like odd ducks on the list unless I've missed some gossip on them.
Matt Dillons agency would like you to officially know he sees more ass than a toilet seat. It has got to be one of the best cover up spins ever. Now that agent is worth the 15%.
Only an idiot would use the offensive antiquated words "old maid spinster" to describe an unmarried woman. I suppose the idiot OP also calls African-American adults "darkies" and African-American children "pickanninies."
R8, as a gay man, I can also acknowledge seeing a great deal of ass in my day. It's an ambiguous accomplishment at best.
[quote]Only an idiot would use the offensive antiquated words "old maid spinster" to describe an unmarried woman.
It sounds like OP is hearing from an ancient and bitter unattached female.
Dana Delaney is a gorgeous woman over 50 who has actually improved with age. Men love her. Hardly an old maid spinster.
If any unmarried women here have purchased property, were you shocked at being described as a spinster in the legal docs?
Love that term old maid spinster. Perfect description.
Like the kernels at the bottom of the popcorn bowl that have never been popped.
Actually "old maid" is one definition of "spinster."
Confirmed Bachelors and Old Maid Spinsters? A tad prejudiced?
How about loser single dorks and old maids?
"Love that term old maid spinster. Perfect description.
The perfection description for you is "retarded douchebag homo." Perfect!
The OP must be an old, old eldergay because "old maid" and "spinster" are from eras where the universal concept was that women were put on this earth to be married and pop out babies. Women who did not get married and have kids were held in contempt and refered to in derogatory terms like the hackneyed "old maid" and spinster." It was the ignorance of the times. Obviously the OP is still stuck in that era; he must be very, very old.
I see some of the women falsely complaining about misogyny on here, but I'd say this is one I'll give to them.
I think OP is an ignorant young gay woman-hater who watches a lot of soap operas.
Donna Mills is an old maid spinster. She was hysterical on GCB last week. Great guest star casting choice with her.
Allison Janney is a old maid spinster.
The title of this thread is very Louella Parsons and I love it!
"Confirmed Bachelors" is also an expresion from olden times. We often see expressions from bygone eras posted at DL so it's amusing to see heads exploding over something as silly as "Old Maid Spinsters."
Billy Campbell was just on "The Talk" (yeah, I know....whatever) and was discussing how he has lived with the same male roommate since 1987 and has never married.
The roommate, however, recently got married, the wife moved in with them, and now the couple has a child.
But "Confirmed Bachelors" is not a put down, r24. It doesn't imply pathetic old virgin the way "old maid" used to. On the contrary.
Yes, R21, you're right. Even as a not particularly enlightened man, I have to side with R19. OP might well have been slightly ironic in using such patently ridiculous terms, but those endorsing the clearly misogynistic "old maid spinster" locution are fools. Elaborating with unpopped corn metaphors is worse than foolish. It's either idiotic or vile or both.
I'm sure OP was merely going for fun on what could be an interesting thread to anyone with a sense of humor. No doubt the main objections to "Old Maid Spinsters" are humorless, cane-faced, pathetic old grouches.
Maybe for "confirmed bachelors," the equivalent term for spinsters, could be sphincters.
Wasn't Frank Langella with Whoopi Goldberg for years and years? And we all know how Whoopi loves the cock!
I only date women in Europe!!!
Thank you r23 and r29!!!!!!!!!!
ROTFLMAO at some of the reactions to these posters!
My first line was "Those of course are old-fashioned terms," so of course I don't take them seriously - but newsflash - in 2012 more people than you would think harbor some lingering predjudice against those unamrried of a certain age, but that is for another thread.
I am, however, amused and surprised some of these posters made assumptions about me and then proceeded to unleash very un-ironic rhetoric themselves.
Anyway, though both are new fathers, Hugh Grant and Bencio Del Toro remain unmarried as well.
Frank Langella isn't a confirmed bachelor, since he was married for twenty years and had two kids.
Can we just say that we know Billy Campbell is gay? Whether his roommate is bi or maybe just wanted to have a baby, who knows?
[quote]If any unmarried women here have purchased property, were you shocked at being described as a spinster in the legal docs?
The descriptive term on legal documents here is either "an unmarried woman" or "an unmarried man."
Wasn't Billy Campbell in a LTR with Jennifer Connelly for many years?
RE. 37 - he's always fascinated me, ever since original 'Tale's From The City'.
So sexy. I know he is a loner, as far as Hollywood goes - takes these trips on fishing schooners for 2-3 months, climbs mountains - all macho stuff. But he's never married, no kids , haven't heard of him dating anyone since Jennifer Connelly, in the early 90's. Yet never heard of him with another guy. Anyone know his real story ?
Donna Mills is an old maid per se.
But Old Maid signifies that nothing happening in the stinkhole and we know that's not the case with most Hollywood types.
Old Maid Spinsters eat jumbo shrimp.
[quote]But Old Maid signifies that nothing happening in the stinkhole and we know that's not the case with most Hollywood types.
Stinkhole? Do you mean poopchute?
She is not an 'old maid spinster' though. Far from it. She has always been gorgeous.
Some women prefer not to marry and/or not to have children.
Holland Taylor (gay, though?) and certainly not an 'old maid spinster".
Katharine Hepburn although she was married a couple of times I think.
Katherine had a husband in the early 1930's.
Greta Garbo, one of the most gorgeous, sought-after women of all time, never married. She never wanted to. But I guess there are retards who would consider her an "old maid spinster."
Katharine Hepburn played old maid types in numerous films/plays. In reality she was just a lesbian.
Nancy Kulp and Donna Douglas were old spinster maids.
Donna Douglas was married, and had a son. I know it seems hard to believe looking at her now.
Ann B. Davis, the housekeeper Alice Nelson on The Brady Bunch was an old maid spinster.
Sam the butcher
Remember that a confirmed bachelor is only that if he is handsome. If he's ugly, he's just a loser who can't get any.
Women who aren't married are old maids and lesbians. Otherwise they'd want to be married. Only on TV do you find women that want to be single.
^ Sorry, but plenty of women in real life don't want to be married. It's 2012 - marriage isn't the be-all end-all for women anymore, nor should it be. Besides, marriage looks like it sucks - it makes perfect sense that women wouldn't want to do it.
[quote]I see some of the women falsely complaining about misogyny on here, but I'd say this is one I'll give to them.
I think some of what gets called "misogyny" on here might more accurately be called "sexism," but whatever one calls it, it certainly exists.
Anyone notice half of the people mentioned are married with a very active sex lives with their wives? Just a thought.
Marriage licenses & certificates issued in Nevada during the 1960s identified all brides as "spinsters" if they'd never been married before. Don't know whether that's still the case.
I've heard a lot of rumors about confirmed bachelor Matt Dillon over the years, but I saw him recently having lunch with his buds and they all looked and acted so straight, high-fiving and punching each other on the arm. It was like an outtake from Entourage.
Most of the people mentioned here are gay.
Dana Delany, Holland Taylor and Donna Mills have plenty of rumors around them. Taylor and Mills are living in a glass closet while Delany loves being ambiguous in her interviews.
Jacqueline Bisset has never married and although she has been in long term relationships with men, there are plenty of rumors about her. The one with Candice Bergen comes to mind. The thread on her in interesting. She's still gorgeous.
Miranda Richardson is another beautiful, older woman that has never married. Plenty of gay rumors on her, too.
Old maid implies virgin, because it's such an old term.
As far as 'having fun' with the spinster old maid shot, why are women always the object of this hostile "humor" here? It OP had used a derogatory term for the man, that wold have been better.
[quote]It OP had used a derogatory term for the man,
But the only term in general use as the opposite of "old maid" or "spinster" is "confirmed bachelor." Those terms indicated an older unmarried person. It's not as if OP created those terms and it's pathetic that so many people got their panties twisted over what was intended to be a thread about closeted actors.
OP used the general old-fashioned terms that were in use for many generations. Would it help if we claim that OP did an eye roll when he typed "confirmed bachelor"?
Correct, it was a sexist world. But since OP used TWO derogatory terms for women, your analysis above does not erase his intention to be hostile. There should be no surprise at the reaction from women AND men. It distracts from what you claim is the true topic of OP's post.
Considering DL's obsession with labelling women as gashes, cunts, fish etc, it's incredible to me that the innocuous terms "old maid" and "spinster" could cause such offence.
The reaction to the terms used in the thread is fascinating - I did not think I had to say anything beyond that first line of my post but I did not create the terms, some of you get the ironic way I am using them others don't.
What I find REALLY fascinating is how people expect me to alter the past and find an equivalent old fashioned male term for OLD MAID - newsflash - this ain't CNN or FoxNews folks. Real life, as opposed to corporate life in America in 2012, just was not fair, balanced, and perfectly equivocal.
Unmarried men were considered confirmed (and eligible) bachelors, unmarried women were considered old maids. Now back to single film stars.
Can't believe no one has mentioned Diane Keaton.
OP, old maid, okay. But why old maid spinsters? You were making a point to be obnoxious.
Two actresses that I thought were old maids were Thelma Ritter and the zaftig Reta Shaw. Looking them up on Wiki, it appears they were both married.
No doubt, some overweight DL spinster will be upset that I used "zaftig."
R60, so basically if a woman has never married, they're gay right? Stupid.
Donna Mills is not single. She has been living with some guy for years. They also adopted a kid together.
Some of you single ladies are wound a little too tight.
[quote]so basically if a woman has never married, they're gay right? Stupid.
In Hollywood, yes. And the ones named in R60's post are gay, so you're the one that is stupid.
R71, Donna Mills may not be single but she is gay.
In the olden days, there was also the "frisky spinster" stereotype.
I think the lesbian rumors on Jacqueline Bisset are just the wishful thinking of lesbians, r60. There is no substance to them.
Donna Mills is gay only on DL.
Stephanie Zimbalist. 54/55 years old, never married. Extremely private; there's almost nothin' about her personal/romantic life on the web.
Of course, that could lead one to speculate that she's a lesbian.....
I have no idea....but I had a big crush on her in the early 80s, during Remington Steele (first drawn to her in the late 70s MOWs "Forever" and The Long Journey Back."). Few women rocked a fedora the way she did!
The fraus are out in full force on this thread.
She's also a lezzie according to some people on IMDb, R76. Not that it makes it so.
I kinda agree with r64. So much worse gets said about women ALL the time here which make "old maid" and "spinster" seem like warm fuzzy compliments in comparison. I'm amazed that this, of all things, is what garners protest, especially when it seems like OP wasn't even being serious.
"I think the lesbian rumors on Jacqueline Bisset are just the wishful thinking of lesbians"
Yeah, sure, kinda like the gay rumors about George Clooney?
Confirmed Bachelor = Nelly Queen
Old Maid Spinster = I don't feel like having your babies, picking up your nasty drawers or being your mama.
Exactly. I agree, R81.
Well, r81 and r83, show real evidence of Jacqueline Bisset being a lesbian, not just speculation, and I'll accept it.
I have no idea, not do I care if Jacqueline Bisset is or is not a lesbian. The only REAL proof would be if she came out as lesbian or a photo/video surfaced showing her engaging in a lesbian act. Would that be enough proof for you? Otherwise it's gossip.
Now, I will ask you to produce the same kind of concrete proof that George Clooney is gay or bi. There isn't any except for the fantasies and longings of some of the DL guys. It's all gossip and speculation.
This is a gossip forum. Capiche?
I understand very well that this is a gossip board, r85. For the record I have never had much interest in George Clooney's sexuality, so I am not one of the people saying that he is gay. My problem with the speculation about Bissett is that it seems to get out of hand with some DL girls. A little moderation might be in order.
For many years, George Clooney always traveled with a guy named Waldo - said to be his hair stylist who was there to make sure he looked good for all his appearances. Unlike Anderson Cooper keeping his boyfriends mostly hidden, George and Waldo were pictured together playing vollyball, basketball, and at vacation spots. Some people claimed Waldo was just an employee who looked after George. Others claimed they were a couple.
Several weeks ago, there was a Clooney interview linked from DL where George claims he always cuts his own hair.
AKA: "Frozen Asset"
Well, Tim Robbins has never been married. Would you consider him a bachelor?
R84, would a signed affidavit by Jacqueline Bisset herself be enough proof for you?
R45 julie christie got married to her longtime boyfriend a few years ago.
The the speculation about Bissett is that it seems to get out of hand?
R86, you have a problem.
I agree, R92.
It always amuses (& sometimes annoys) me when women are accused of "wishful thinking" regarding the sexuality of attractive females when the wishful thinking of the men here is SOOOOOO much more prevalent and over-the-top!
It's the judgement and go homophobia that gets me, r94 .
Good call r77.
I've read some gossip about some of the tension between Zimbalist and Brosnan stemming from her homosexuality. Supposedly he made a crack about finally being able to work with a "real lady" when his wife guest-starred on the show.
Another George Cloone story revolves around a California earthquake. On a talk show, he told how he and his male friend ran naked out of the house when everything began to shake. They were glad when the shaking stopped so they could grab some clothes.
Oh dear, that should be: Another George Clooney story...
I miss the "Preview" option we used to have.
Where does 'spinster' come from? What are they supposed to be spinning? I have images of a medieval woman with a spindle.
It is odd that a man the age of Billy Campbell would have a male roommate, one who marries a woman and then they all live together? Anyway, I'd gladly spend 2-3 months on a fishing schooner with him.
George Clooney, Keanu Reeves, Matt Dillon, Jake Gyllenhaal and the now engaged Matthew McConaughey all have had credible rumors about their sexuality. It's not just wishful thinking.
Holland Taylor says she's "not the marrying kind"....
Which is equivalent to saying "I'm a lesbian"
Pierce Brosnan is a total homophobe and proud of it, at least when he was in the show with Stephanie. He must have had a very hard time getting women to date him if he was so threatened by a lesbian co-star.
So, r102, it hasn't got out of hand because it's guys? Why haven''t you mentioned that handsome devil, John Goodman?
R104 - Pierce is anything but a homophobe, at least from what I've read about him. What makes you say he is?
Because of the snarky comments he made about Stephanie during Remmngton Steele. He didn't "agree with her lifestyle."
I used to live near Matt Dillon in the middle '80s when he had a loft on Bond Street off of Bowery (Lauren Hutton had a loft in the same building at the time), and he never pinged at all to me and took women home all the time.
I also saw him with Charlie Sheen and other guys who seemed to be buds, but of course I have no idea what they did or did not do inside.
He may be a Kinsey 6 for all I know, but he seemed to me like a young straight guy getting lots of pussy and who also had a lot of other young horndog friends.
Matt Dillon and Richard Grieco are gay...my barber's son used to hang out with them all the time...he showed me pictures of them....sadly her son died of AIDS.
This was in the early 90's
The following actresses play the card game Old Maid, but are not quite Spinsters because they have yet to play their last hand...
Cameron Diaz: Has yet to play her last hand.
Allison Janney: Well...
Donna Mills: Thinks she has played her last hand in claiming to be the long time ladyfriend of Richard Holland even though they have never lived together at any time and she also did not even include him when she adopted her daughter.
Kristen Davis: Plays Old Maid and will gladly help anyone who would like to learn the rules. Such a thing is what happens when a Mormon raised lady enters the entertainment industry.
Sandra Bullock: Plays Old Maid like a master. She is very good friends with an older actress who has helped her fine tune her Old Maid skills after having divorced. This older actress printed the cards, invented the rules, and made the game to what it is today, and she is also a dear lady.
Sandra Bullock is a master at hiding the fact that she is a lesbian but people close to her have started to talk.
Betty White or Candice Bergen?
"Lauren Hutton had a loft in the same building at the time"
What about Lauren Hutton, r108? Most definitely lesbian or slightly bi, and a very big closet case.
[quote]Why haven't you mentioned that handsome devil, John Goodman?
Why mention John Goodman when nobody goes around claiming he's straight?
Well said r114. Same reason the very handsome James Franco is not on the list at r102 because he's practically waving a rainbow flag without coming out and no sane person thinks he's straight.
You beat me to it, r115.
Not the sharpest knife in the drawer, are you, R114?
No doubt, r116, you cunt maintain an intelligent conversation and would rather promote your assholey fundie-style views of gay men.
A few decades ago, Ian McKellen would have been on the Confirmed Bachelor list.
[quote]I suppose the idiot OP also calls African-American adults "darkies" and African-American children "pickanninies."
Yes, let's bring race into the thread without any motivation whatsoever: that always makes discussions more rational and thoughtful.
What makes you think that people who can get married want to.
OP thinks he was being witty and fun, but he was really just being a dick. He can't comprehend that, of course.
Know many attractive men and women of all ages that choose to remain single. Most have had opposite sex relationships.
Don't use words or expressions that you can't spell. It will keep you from looking like an idiot.
Who is Sandy Bullock's older actress "close friend"?
Allison Janney is neither gay nor an old maid. She is divorced and has dated numerous guys.
If she were gay no one would be happier than I, take my word.
Do old Hollywood actors/actresses who have been married only once(to each other)but never procrated-count?
link for that so-called quote, R107. Brosnan had to give up being selected to play James Bond because of Remington Steele. He was pissed off about everything at that point. He was later able to get the role, but it was a huge deal at the time.
R20--they ARE on Earth to have babies. Or do you actually believe that God has a wonderful purpose for every individual?
