Ring on Right Hand Ring Finger

What does it mean? Long story short, I ended up on a YouTube video posted by my ex, and it only shows his hands. In one view, you can see he's wearing a dark metallic ring on his right hand. I know he's not married, but is it likely he's in an LTR (which is unlikely itself since he's a grad student, teaching a course once a week, working, and blogging about solo activities). Lately I've been wanting to reach out and make contact with him, but as soon as I saw the ring I was completely wrecked.

• It used to be that gays would wear their rings on that finger to show they were partnered. However, dumb het guys always put their school class rings there so it fell out of favor, as did the reference to that finger as the "fag finger."

• This reminds me of the Hanky Code of the 1970s. For some reason the sides (left and right) were reversed from West Coast to East Coast. The letters were the same (M&S) but on one coast "M" meant "master" and on the other it meant "masochist". I think it took making the hanky code into a greeting card to straighten it out. Also, when earrings became fashionable you had the same right/left issue, only more so in California. The Mexican guys adopted earrings as well. One side meant your first sexual encounter was with a girl over 14 and one meant she was under 14. Needless to say, many Gay guys saw the earrings and came to the wrong conclusion.
