With The Vow, he goes from C-lister who might have to compromise himself to be in the business to king of the B-list for a week.
We all know that the Vow won't have legs after Valentine's Day.
I don't mean to be demeaning by saying that. It is an accomplishment in itself. Tatum seems like a nice guy and I wish him well. But A-lister, he isn't yet.
A-listers must have some success, yes, but they also have prestige.
A-listers can pretend to Oscar nominations and feel cheated when they don't get one.
Actually, there is nothing wrong with the B movies. I think I like better modest, friendly, eye candy Channing Tatum than some of the A-listers who take themselves too seriously.
That said, I'd like to him in a movie with a good script and great direction to see what it would give. But nothing too pretentious like a Shakespeare first role with Ralph Fines and Vanessa Redgrave, for instance. It's not his place yet.

It's guaranteed to cross $100M, estimates are it'll finish in the $120M range domestically, which is probably a lot more than they were expecting given its budget (in the $30M range?) and past performance of similar movies like "Dear John" and "The Notebook" (which I think both finished in the $80M range). No matter what its performance from now on, its first two weekends made it very profitable, so it's considered a success, and probably a nice relief for the careers of both Tatum and McAdams.
I mean, I don't think it makes them "A-List", but at least they get to avoid the "box-office poison" label (the same can't be said for Witherspoon, who's starting to go down the Kidman route).

And actually, by your reasoning the first Transformers should have flopped spectacularly, but unfortunately for everyone it didn't.
If they've proceeded to a G.I. Joe sequel, it's because the first one did okay enough. I don't think it'll outright bomb - probably another modest but not breakout profit, but it depends on what's out there that particular weekend. People tend to lower their standards a bit for big action movies in the summer.

I'm not wishing for it to flop - I couldn't care less one way or the other. It's just that I haven't heard about GI Joe since the 80's, so I figured this would be a flop.
