- His review comes across as a conniving attempt to do 2 things at once: admit the truth, which is that Streep is a better actor, but at the same time trash her with some invented vague perceptual idea so that he can push his personal resentment of her superiority.
- He makes a strong argument. I get his point(s), but I still love Meryl and enjoy watching her performances.
- This public pose that Streep is some cold technician whose performances are intricate but empty marvels is 'received wisdom'. I'm not a Streep troll. I don't think she's above criticism, but this priest's (hardly original) stance seems as rote as he accuses her of being. She has an ear, which helps with accents, but there's far more to it than that.
I haven't seen The Iron Lady - a wait for DVD (or not) if ever there was one - but, come on!

- I was raised Catholic but I'm agnostic -- have been all of my adult life. Yeah, he's probably gay. But so what. Not all priests are evil child abusing creatures. There were some good and kind priest in my life. (None were funny, however!) He can be gay and he can be a priest. And priests don't have to spend every waking moment doing priestly things. He's allowed to write film criticism if he wants to.
