Why does Nathan Fillion look so fat on "Castle"?

He doesn't seem that heavy in photos when he's off the show. Maybe they need to hire a new wardrobe person.

They all look quite good especially Sean Maher, the openly gay actor. He looks delicious. He was my favorite from the series even back then, and he pinged then. He's held up really well. He's adorable and gorgeous. It's on the Science channel right now should you want to watch.

I watched his film "Serenity" earlier, and he was slimmer then but still thick.
R203 - Thanks! R204 - Nathan looked about the same in Serenity as compared to the series. Jewel was substantially slimmer in Serenity (she gained weight for the series), and Morena was a little thicker in the movie.
They introduced him at Comic Con as "Captain Tightpants or sometimes Girlpants." Why "Girlpants"? I knew of Captain Tightpants but didn't know he was known as Girlpants.
R206 - I don't know Girlpants. I love love the episode where Kaylee calls him Captain Tightpants.
He has gained weight. My buddy and I talk about how he needs to trim it down...like maybe S1/ S2. He's still good looking and doesn't seem to have any problems catching chicks, even tho this one seems very young than what he's usually with. I know he's been known to be sweet and all, but it kinda makes one wonder what she's seeing in him being an in shape 27 year old dating an overweight 41 year old man. And the mystery is she use to tweet about him all the time when he was hanging out with her and her friends. He even tweeted/ retweeted her a few times as well as asked fans to follow her (which I don't recall him ever doing for other potential gfs). But now it seems he's tweeting up a storm while she's gone nearly mute. Kinda makes you wonder if she asked him to stop tweeting so much about her to keep prying eyes away- which really doesn't make sense considering she was doing all the tweeting about him at first. And did anyone see how far she was leaning away from him on that Halloween party pic someone posted? Her head was basically tilted towards that other guy...as if she didn't want people to think she was actually with him. She needs to move on if she's embarrassed and stop trying to stay with him for the perks.

may be there's something wrong with me but I don't think he's overweight. Though I just started watching Castle last week lol. he is definitely bigger an older than in dr. Horrible when I saw him last but it tends to happen with people as years pass. And he wasn't perfectly fit as captain Hammer too, I think he's just built like that. Don't know I still find him crazy attractive lol. these pics (I believe recent?) posted here... yum! And the stuff about gf, come on she's 27 not 17 lol. if you just started watching, then you must be watching s1. worst is s4, he non only looked heavy but sick sometime, truly think he has a medical condition. s5 he seems to have shed some weight, dating someone this young can be a motivator to stay fit.

@reply 213, I watched what ABC showed last monday, the eppy about them being trapped with a witness who SPOILER! turned to be the killer. I don't know what season it is, but not the first one. And I was talking about pics from couple of weeks ago someone posted on the previous page here. may be we just have diff. opinions on what overweight is lol. I found the pic of the gf, she's pretty and seems smart - physics for god's sake! weren't his previous gfs fit though? would've been odd for Hollywood if that's the case lol.
I watched the show for the first time tonight. (believe it or not........whatever). I thought nathan reminded me of someone and it drove me crazy through the first half of the show........... then it hit me : Jason Bateman. Does anyone else notice the similarity? Maybe it's the hair...... but I can picture an older version of Bateman. I was SO in love with Jason....... but still find Nathan attractive. Perhaps it's because I like my men "stocky", and this is the first time viewing him so I have nothing to compare him to. Interesting to read that he's apparently gay.

He was actually in his best shape for Serenity. He worked out some (check out the shirtless scene) and was thinner than when he was on Firefly. He was fine until the middle of his run on Castle, and now he's just getting heavy by TV standards, and he doesn't have a face that looks good with extra weight, IMO. They try to disguise the weight gain with all those jackets, and vertical striped shirts, but it's very obvious. Nathan's problem is that he doesn't like to work out-in the past, he was never overweight, he just wasn't muscular and in shape the way we expect from modern actors. His lack of fitness has caught up with him now that he's older. It takes some effort to keep the pounds off after you hit 40.
As long as he keeps that phat chunky butt I don't care how big he gets.

Mr. Fillion is Perfectly Georgeous exactly as he is! I know Castle is just a TV show, but there is so something at the root of him/his character that is just so adorable to me. I'd be in heaven if I could spend an afternoon getting to know the real Mr. Fillion, & just exactly how much of him is also in Rick Castle ;-)

where people got it that he's gay actually? I only ever heard speculations about that because he's so affectionate with everyone - men and women alike. But not even rumors, or anything concrete, or any "definite hints" like it is usually with Hollywood gays before they come out. Also I have a pretty good gaydar and he just doesn't ping. The way he talks about women... he just does it like a straight guy. He looks, sounds and behaves like a straight guy who is well brought-up and is used to having female friends. That's my impression anyway. I know a couple of anons shared some "stories" here earlier, but I'm just not convinced.
He's not "gigantic." He is a little beefy but looks like a bajillion other men in the world who aren't tweezed, manorexic or trying to fit into the shit they shoplifted from H&M or Topshop. I think he's incredibly hot. I saw him here in Chicago at an event about nine or ten months ago, and I will say he looks thinner in person. I think the lighting on Castle adds some poundage to him.
Yeah, I don't think he's gay either. I read what people here had to say and the only story that rang true was that he used to "experiment" in his youth. I could believe that, who didn't? And he feels like a guy who's comfortable with his body (whatever size, LOL) and sex, and yeah like somebody said, very touchy-feely with people. I always see him hugging and being hugged or manhandled in every way, LOL. Seems like he gets this affectionate reaction from other people as well. If Joss Whedon weren't married with kids I could believe they're secretly a couple, LOL. Every pic I see looks like they can't keep their hands off each other. Same with Joel McHale. I think it's adorable.
Has noone thought - weight gain is logical progression for the character because he eats whipped cream out of a can, resorts to every flavour of ice cream regularly and cooks chocolate bars and marshmallows in omlettes. It inevitable and should be addressed in the story line.

Sounds like r234 knows something the rest of us don't. Really get the impression that they only like each other for the sake of the show but who knows? Stana really seems to keep her private life private, very hard to do being in the spotlight but as someone else said, Nathan is constantly being linked to women, fat or not!
He is absolutely gorgeous and his weight is just fine. As for being gay, i hope he is and I hope he can find real happiness. He is a great actor and a beautiful man.
