Gayle King To Substitute Anchor On CBS Evening News – First African American Woman at CBS To Do So!
In addition to being the new co-anchor of CBS This Morning, her contract also guarantees she substitute for Scott Pelly anchoring the CBS Evening News.
She will be the FIRST African American Woman at CBS to do so, in addition to being the first African American woman since Carole Simpson to do so at any of the major networks.
What took the big three networks so long?
So, to qualify to read the news at a network now, you need to muff dive Oprah Winfrey?
Gayle King has over 20 years of hard news experience.
No wonder she left Oprah. Girls movin' on up!
This is another big who cares? Is this the best CBS can do?
Yeah, what's the big deal? Robin Roberts has been with GMA for, oh, how many years now?
And now Gayle is reading words off a teleprompter...part-time? Is that really an accomplishment?
Robin Roberts has never anchored ABC World News. NEVER. Only one woman at ABC has done so, and that is Carole Simpson.
Good for her. She looks great and it's probably because she dumped that Oprah Winfat.
A girl's gotta eat.

Are you saying that Diane Sawyer is a man?
The Voice of the Night
African American Woman, Diane is not black
Voice, unless you know something we don't Diane Sawyer isn't black. We know she does the lez-lez but she isn't a woman of color….which was what this thread is stating.
Oh, sorry. This is the part of winter break where I start to go a little crazy.
You'll be rid of me on Monday.
Anyway, if Gayle has managed to rid herself of Oprah, I think it's a good thing. For Gayle, and probably also for Oprah.
The Voice of the Night
Wonder how Gayle is going to like to have actual work hours?
I think they should have kept Russ Mitchell. Gayle is nice and all, and I think the morning show will be fine with her, but she wouldn't have this evening news opportunity if CBS didn't get rid of Russ.
Russ salary went to help pay for Gayle.
This is the CBS Evening News. Substituting for Scott Pelly, Gayle King.
What R2 said.
Whatever you may think of her, she did work in news for decades prior to being known as Oprah's friend. I prefer her getting the position to hearing about yet another entitled rich kid benefiting from nepotism.... Luke, Chelsea, Jenna come to mind.
First dyke as well?
What was that, R18?
[quote]Voice, unless you know something we don't Diane Sawyer isn't black. We know she does the lez-lez but she isn't a woman of color….which was what this thread is stating.
And I STILL say big fuckin' deal. Are we supposed to be amazed that an African-American woman can read from a teleprompter? Is that really considered an accomplishment? Is that what passes for a role model nowadays?
Would she even be considered for this position if it weren't for her affiliation with the big O? After all, she became nationally known because of O.
Am I the only one hoping that Gayle's time at CBS will be a fucking disaster?
How is poor O dealing with this abandonment?
To answer R21: No, she would not have even been considered for this position if she was not a tabloid-ready African-American woman.
That being said, as a gay man, I think they should have kept Russ Mitchell because I so want to have sex with him when I see him on tv.
So Erica Hill used to sub for Katie Couric. I guess she has been demoted from being able to do that as well?
[quote]African American Woman, Diane is not black
But you didn't say "African-American woman," did you? You said "woman."
The great black Carol Simpson was weekend news anchor at ABC for years. Loved her.
If somebody could drop a bomb into this thread, we'd finally be rid of most of the fraus and at least one omnipresent authenticated troll who lurk here.
Too bad that can't happen.
R29 what's the problem?
Gayle filed her first report tonight on The CBS Evening News. An exclusive interview with First Lady Michelle Obama.
To the earlier poster I say -- again -- Russ wasn't let go to pay for someone else's salary. He left because he was fired for cause.
Only problem R32, you can't back up what you are saying with no link or proof of any kind.
Anyone else think she should revisit her wardrobe concept with a stylist?
There is already a stylist on staff that advises her on her on-air wardrobe.
Gayle King was the star anchor at WFSB, the CBS affiliate in Hartford, CT years before Oprah was famous or even had her local Chicago talk show. I remember Gayle well on WFSB. She was a damn good anchorwoman and reporter.
putting aside her association with Oprah, Gayle is the WORST interviewer on TV, so she would be better off reading news off a prompter. She was on the CBS morning show yesterday and continually interrupted guests with her opinions and questions that didn't flow with others. SHUT UP GAYLE!!
[R24] Me too. Russ has a sexy ass voice and you just know he is sporting some serious BBC.
R36 = Janet Peckinpaugh
What R1 said.
Apparently, the news business is proving that there is no work or 'business' involved and they aren't even hiding the nepotism any more.
I wonder if they will smear Vaseline over the camera lens like they do with Diane Sawyer.
They smeared Vaseline on the lens for Diane! HAW HAW HAW!!!
They smeared mayonnaise on the lens for me.
Happy to see some love for Russ Mitchell. I have liked him for years; I hope he gets a good gig soon.
Boy, eating Oprah's pussy has really paid off for her, hasn't it?
I love how her press interviews always mention about how she hopes she still has time to date now that she has to get up so early-----like that bitch has been near a man in 30 years
R40 Gayle is not the first nor the last person to go from local news to network news.
She has over 20 years of local news experience, and now she is at the network level.
What is wrong with that?
r35 -- why does the stylist hate Gayle?
[quote] Happy to see some love for Russ Mitchell. I have liked him for years; I hope he gets a good gig soon.
He took a gig anchoring the local news in Cleveland.
She's the sister I never had... Oh wait
"Around the time Oprah moved back in, her mother Lee had given birth to another daughter, Winfrey's younger half-sister, Patricia who later (on February 2003, at age 43) died of causes related to cocaine addiction. By 1962, Lee was having difficulty raising both daughters so Winfrey was temporarily sent to live with Vernon in Nashville, Tennessee. While Winfrey was in Nashville, Lee gave birth to a third daughter. Lee gave this daughter, later also named Patricia, up for adoption in the hope of easing the financial straits that had led to Lee's being on welfare. Winfrey did not learn she had a second half-sister until 2010."
So, I thought Gayle was the brains behind O Magazine? Did she just walk away, or has she been replaced, or was that never true?
I honestly don't see why CBS hired Gayle; yes, she was an anchor in CT but that's easily been 20 years ago. Despite the fact that Oprah's been shoving her down the public's throat for years, her interview shows have never done well and she's not much to look at first thing in the morning. Yes, she's got some in with Michelle Obama, but could you see her interviewing some non-celebrity type person?
R53 she has OVER 20 years news experience. Not she worked in news 20 years ago.
If Meredith Vieria can go from The View to the Today show, why not Gayle?
r46: at least three posters said the same thing you said but no one is paying attention, its easier to snark and say Oprah got her the gig whch is probably not true but not as fun.
Oh and nepotism never existed in network news until now, right? Or does it sting more when its black women?
What NEWS has Gayle handled in the last 20 years other than breathlessly fawning over Beyonce and JayZ on one of her short lived insipid talk shows - name one NEWS related piece she's done?
She worked in Local news for 20 years in Hartford, Connecticut
Boy, r56 you better stock up on Aleve with Black History month coming up.
Still hot 'n' heavy with Cory Booker, I'm sure!
Good for her.
I like Gayle
Right r58... and when does Gay History Month come up?
I saw her in the a.m.
She is so bad.
I guess being a news reader 30 years ago means you have to keep up the skill or you lose it, no?
Because she is just that bad.
r63 = A bitter and unemployed Star Jones
[quote]Only one woman at ABC has done so, and that is Carole Simpson.
Is Carole Simpson really the only African-American woman ever to anchor a network evening newscast (meaning ABC, CBS, or NBC, for what that distinction still means)?
I always liked her, and some years ago I saw a speech she gave that was carried on C-SPAN, I think, where she half-joked about having to wear a wig on television in order to look the way she supposed to.
What's Carole up to these days? And is Gayle wearing wigs?
I saw Carole on CNN interviewing with Don Lemon about the topic of black anchors being confined to weekend spots. It was bizarre considering Don Lemon did the interview in his weekend time spot!
Gayle is NEVER without a wig. Whoever her stylist is at CBS is doing a pretty good job of making sure her wig looks like human hair and not a helmet like it did for many years.
I heard Hoda Kotb's hair is not all growing from her scalp. If thats true she has the best wigs or extensions in television.
Charlayne Hunter-Gault anchored on the McNeil/Lerner Report for PBS.
That makes two (Hunter-Gault & Simpson)
Damn, she's leaving Oprah in the dust.
r62: that would be June or October
not bitter but truthful
Pat Harvey was subbing on The Talk today. I think she is jealous of Gayle.
Yes this is a big fucking deal....black people ALWAYS get over looked as if we don't exist......we are educated,smart,talented,classy....but in all areas of life we never get celebrated unless we come together and celebrate and acknowledge our own accomplishments. So I salute Gayle on today for a job very well done. The best is yet to come for her.
Why was Russ Mitchell fired?
I love Gayle in the AM!
What happened to the threads on Gayle's "I'm gay" comment this morning?
Those threads are still here.
We now know that Gayle was the first lesbian to anchor a network evening news show. Good for her!
You can add Gwen Ifill to anchoring a network evening newscast
That makes three (Charlayne Hunter-Gault & Carole Simpson)
First Oprah appoints Obama president, now she's meddling in CBS.
