I wish they would bring back her version of "The Apprentice" with real people, not celebrities. Would be a great fit on Bravo.
My friend works on that show. What happens when a show is cancelled? Do the producers still get paid for the remainder of their contracts?
I thought her exclusive deal with the Hallmark Channel would be a ratings and cash bonanza!
Loved the show and would tape it everyday.(And did when it was syndicated.) But my cable company doesn't carry Hallmark. When I tried to find out if there were plans to get the channel included, I was greeted with deafening silence from both Hallmark and MSLO.
They should have never done the studio audience version. Martha spread herself to thin.
What they should do is go back to a taped version, once a week. Have it air during the weekends, in syndication.
I always enjoyed her show. I got some great cooking tips and recipes from MS along with advice on caring for pets.
It's too bad, she's the only presenter on TV who doesn't feel the need to be loud and annoying. Well I guess there's Anderson, but he's not loud and annoying b/c he's ashamed of himself.
Is there a way to check book sales? I want to know how many copies (if any) of Alexis's book have sold.
What is going on w/Alexis now that she quit her radio show? What was she thinking?
I prefer Martha's "original" show from the late 90s--no chat with celebs or studio audience, just cooking and decorating demos.
Me too, R10. I should have said that in my post.
Her original show was very good, back when her guests had something to teach.
Why did she put that horrible "comedian" on her show as a regular? Joey I think his name is. He is not funny and has zero audience appeal. Who is he fucking to get and keep that job?
Martha and Oprah should have bought out Hallmark. Their respective demographic would have been just right there, man. I like Martha because I met her twice on two different occasions and she was quite the lovely conversationalist. Very, very liberal as well.
Dud Alexis have a breakdown? Remember when she and Jennifer had that book out? Alexis had a fit on some morning talk show and whatnot, cancelled all other interviews, and was basically never seen again.
Is Alexis in rehab or getting mental health treatment?
Damn. I lost that recipe for banana bread. And what will become of my centerpiece?
Her exec producers dispute the report, saying the show is fine through the current season and they'll re-evaluate, re-charge, whatever.
Anyone else agree that the move from syndication on local network affiliates to Hallmark was a stupid one?
I've never seen this "new" show, but agree about the one c. 2001-2 when watching it was like going to museum. I remember learning all about jade when she had some curator explaining the mineral and how it was used thousands of years ago in China, her going on a tour of a factory that makes plastic flowers and explaining their production, and there was always that queen bringing some fascinating animal or dog breed on that no one had ever heard of.
Maybe it's time she gives up having her own show. People want more drama and competition now, instead of happy lifestyle tips (see how HGTV and the Food Channel have changed).
If I were Martha, I'd renegotiate a bigger deal with the Today show or whichever morning show will pay to have me, maybe sign on to some cable specials. But I'd take time to enjoy my several fabulous homes, travel a lot, and continue to have the books and consumer products done in my name (which still carries a lot of weight)
She can't run her company due to being an ex-con. The show was all she had. She'll have to retire now, or write more books, but basically she's done.
I thought her show on Hallmark was "Paid Programing", I'm not being cynical, I watched it a couple of times and it was like watching a long ad with commercial breaks. She even showed home movies on one episode, it was obvious she was showing them so she could write her vacation off as a businesses expense. Martha, Oprah and Rosie are leftovers from a bygone era when we all had more money and leisure time to indulge their foolsihness.
I disagree, R27. I cook more now, and I do other things around the house to save money.
Oprah and Rosie don't fit into the same category, but MS taught useful skills.
Hate to see her show canceled. I tape it everyday and always get the best recipes.
I hope her other shows, like Martha Bakes and Mad Hungry with Lucinda Scala Quinn, will continue to air. Lucinda always has her hot sons cooking with her.
Wow. Got a New Year's email from someone who used to work on the show saying she'd left the show late last year for another job.
r26 There was only a short time where she was forbidden to head her company but it's lapsed and she's back in charge. I don't believe that no matter what position she was demoted to that she was ever not in charge.
I don't think she should have a studio audience either. She's so poor at relating to others and you can always see her practically seething at having to interact with the little people. I once saw a show where they had on the children of people who worked for her and she actually tried to get them to confess if their parents complained about having to work so hard. I'm always stunned at how nasty and condescending she is.
Cancellation? It's a good thing.
Hallmark Channel is one of the highest rated cable channels, believe it or not. Her show had to bring in more ratings than it ever did to stay on the Hallmark Channel.
That's interesting R33, I had no idea Hallmark was that big.
Good. She's a fucking cunt.
Martha's 70 this year - maybe she wants to slow down a bit?
What other shows does Hallmark even have? Every time I turn it on it's either Martha Stewart or Little House on the Prairie.
They need to do a reality show with the people who work for her — who are more interesting than she is and do most of the heavy lifting anyway.
They're paying the piper now for expanding past what the economy wants. Her organization has more to it than people are willing to buy.
But there's still a market there. Martha has found a new audience in young people who are entertaining at home, since it's become harder to spend the money to go out. Crafting is actually big again.
Paint line not included, her merchandising makes money. And her Living magazine is one of the top 40 in the country, with a monthly circ just over 2 million -- higher than Men's Health, Us Weekly and Entertainment Weekly.
She's got stuff to sell — they just need to cut the fat over there at MSLO.
R37, before MS, Hallmark airs two hours of the original Bob Newhart Show. In the evening, the perennial DL fave, The Golden Girls...
Martha had a good run.
Hallmark produces a lot of original "feel good" movies that the fraus adore. During the holidays, they air one Christmas movie after another.
I bet Martha will continue to produce specials for Hallmark. Her Thanksgiving and Christmas specials are always great.
Agree w/R30 - enjoyed the previous version of her shows much more. More interesting to learn from those shows. She REALLY does not seem to know how to interact w/people who don't own six houses filled with expensive antiques, etc.
The reason the show moved to Hallmark was it HAD to. When it was syndicated, the ratings were so low that most of the stations that aired it dropped it (I believe to pick up the new Dr Oz show?) so they had to go to a network, and Hallmark was the one that bit.
Turned out Martha's show got fewer viewers than the reruns of the Golden Girls that it replaced in the timeslot.
The old PBS show was the kind of show she should do—the one that teaches you something, or interacting with an expert on some topic. No one wants to see Martha uncomfortably interviewing random celebrities who know nothing about food, crafting or homekeeping.
I feel bad for all the people I know who work for the company (I used to) because it is sinking fast.
The production cost is ~$25 million per year. The rent on the Chelsea studio alone is $5 million. Martha also renovated the studio. The budget wasn't adjusted when she went from syndication to cable. In any event, Hallmark is not dropping Martha altogether; they have other things in development with her.
i will missed her show ,she is not very warm that the thruth ,but she is not with out talent.she is so rich that she should have a good time ,isFor Alexie her show was so insulting for her mother ,even degrading ,this show should never been air ,shame on you Alexie. Lucinda Scala is a wonderful cook ,but she is like a dictator ,she thinck that she is so perfect ,me... me..me ,
Martha is off to the the PBS Create channel.
R48 That's good. It where she should have stayed at to begin with.
