The Help is not at all a "White people are all evil" movie. About 5 of the white characters are heroic in their support of the black characters. And other white characters,like Leslie Jordan's character, are also not portrayed as overtly racist.

I grew up in Atlanta in the 50's, and I never witnessed the vile, hateful treatment of maids as depicted in The Help. But the story was in Mississippi, which was widely regarded as worse than Atlanta for blacks. And the movie did capture the feeling of hopelessness that blacks had to feel at that time. It seemed impossible to change the racist system. Even some of us white folks felt it seemed hopeless. My father (white) feared losing his job for being an "N-lover." And rednecks drove by our home shooting bullets at us for expressing pro-black opinions. So I can only imagine what blacks experienced. It seemed like a prison from which none of us could escape. And when you visited the North, you heard even more racist comments than you did in the South. Those were horrible times.
