- I live on Long Island and all of us who were around at the time were so saddened and horrified by Harry Chapin's accident. He was in the left lane and tried to steer off to the side of the road when his car failed, but just couldn't get off in time.

This is totally wrong. He was having car trouble and his car gave out. He tried to steer off the roadway but was hit and killed by a truck before he could get off the road.

August 30, 1991: Country singer Dottie West (58 years old) was killed as a result of riding with her 81-year-old neighbor George Thackston. Trying to make up for lost time on their way to a Grand Ole Opry performance, George sped at 55 mph on an Opryland exit ramp (with a posted speed of 25 mph). George lost control of the car, which left the roadway, went airborne for 165 feet, and struck an embankment. George was severely injured, but Dottie died five days later (September 4) on the operating table. Her liver and spleen had sustained too much damage.
God, forgive me but it was also a bit funny that Dottie demanded from a 81-year-old man to speed up.

- Don't overlook FW Murnau, who -- according to Kenneth Anger, a less impeachable source than Darwin Porter -- died in a car wreck with his chauffeur's severed penis in his mouth, killed because his chauffeur involuntarily stepped harder on the gas during orgasm.
- Worth mentioning, perhaps (because I never get tired of talking about F. W. Murnau), that he reportedly cast only gay and lesbian actors in the films he directed. This does not seem to be refuted by his frequent casting of Janet Gaynor -- what of her frequent co-star in his films, Charlie Farrell (who was later cast as Vern Albright, father of My Little Margie, and went on to become mayor of Palm Springs, a post later held by Sonny Bono)?
I think I have too much time on my hands. But who here can cast the first stone?

[quote]According to a CNN interview with Angela Rockwood Nguyen in 2005, Trang died on September 3, 2001, near San Francisco, California after a car accident. She was 27 years old. Trang and former actress/model Angela Rockwood-Nguyen, to whom Trang was to be a bridesmaid to in her then upcoming marriage to Dustin Nguyen, were passengers in a car traveling on Interstate 5 between San Francisco and Los Angeles. They were returning late at night from visiting Rockwood-Nguyen's planned maid of honor when the driver (another of the bridesmaids) of the vehicle she was riding in lost control. The car swerved violently across the road before hitting the roadside rock face and flipping several times before hitting the safety rail and plunging over the bank. Rockwood-Nguyen, who has claimed that she was not wearing a seat belt in different interviews, survived after being thrown out of the vehicle through a window before its final impact; she is now paraplegic. It is thus not known whether Trang or the driver were wearing seatbelts. The driver survived the accident; however, Trang died before reaching the hospital, due to the injuries she had sustained. Trang was cremated a week later on September 10, and her ashes are interred at Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier, California. Her Power Rangers co-stars Amy Jo Johnson and David Yost attended the funeral and memorial service to pay respect to their fallen co-star. The episode "Circuit Unsure" of Power Rangers Time Force was dedicated to Trang's memory.

Having drunk a considerable amount of vodka, Horton was driving on the Queen Elizabeth Way from Toronto to Buffalo in his De Tomaso Pantera sports car when he failed to make a curve, lost control, and hit a cement culvert. - EY Yip Harburg, the great songwriter and lyricist of "The Wizard of Oz" and "Finian's Rainbow," died in a car crash. But they determined he had had a heart attack and that's why he crashed.
- Harry Chapin actually died of a heart attack. He had the heart attack while driving on the Long Island Expressway, a truck hit his car and then burst into flames, but two people were able to pull him from the wreckage. He died of cardiac arrest on the way to the hospital. He would've died that day even if he had not been driving.
- Tuesday Weld isn't dead, idiot at r79.
- [quote] Billy Martin, creepy Yankees manager
Hey. That is uncalled for. We love you, Billy!
- People rewrite history on the Internet. Chapin's accident was witnessed by many people. It was midday on the LIE. His car had a failed and he tried to steer the car from the left lane to the center lane to the right lane and off the road. He'd put his flashers on and was signaling with his arm that his car was in trouble. The traffic was too fast and couldn't stop in time and his small car was destroyed by a truck that went over the car at a high rate of speed. It is doubtful he would have "died of a heart attack" that same day in the car or out of it.
Chapin was a careless driver. His license had been revoked. Believe me, it is a lot easier to get your license revoked nowadays than it was back then. His wife shouldn't have gotten a huge settlement from the trucking firm. It was in no way the fault of the truck driver that he could not stop in time. It is no doubt his family who are claiming he would have died of a heart attack if he'd been sitting at home. It was pretty common to list cardiac arrest as a cause of death back in those days if there wasn't one injury the coroner could definitively cite as cause of death.
Multiple people saw him signaling that his car was in trouble. You don't put on your blinkers, put your arm out the window of your car and then slam on the brake when you are dying of a heart attack. This whole "he died of a heart attack while driving" bullshit is a recent story pushed by his grown kids. Chapin has been glorified to near-saint status so his foundation can be kept going. He has a little bit of a Gilda's Club thing going on -- young people don't really know him or care about him.
He wasn't at all a bad person, but he was negligent about cars and driving. It sounds better to make up a story about how "nobody knows if he had a heart attack before or after the accident. He led such a hectic life because he cared so much about his music, his fans and his charity! His caring too much ultimately killed him!" I'd probably do the same thing if I was one of his kids. I wouldn't want young people to know my father was so negligent that his license had been revoked for a shitload of unpaid fines and violations and that whoops, dad drove crazily, didn't take care of his cars, didn't obey traffic laws and then died in a car accident.
I know there was an urban legend claiming he was decapitated, but that was never recounted by actual eyewitnesses to the accident.
