Philadelphia

I've been to Philly and have been surprised by certain things. I loved the place and had a great time, but...where are all the Italians? I had this perception of Philly from the Rocky movies, but it seems like the whole town is very black, Irish and waspy. Am I crazy?

• No - not crazy. You just didn't visit the right part of town. "South Philly" is Italian central.

• Do they ever leave the neighborhood? Also, is Philly very prejudiced. It seemed like people stuck to their own kind there. Not a flame war or troll, but just curious.

• I'm terrified by the stories of violent flash mobs in Philadelphia.

• "old school" South Philly italians do not leave the neighborhood and even stick w/in a few blocks. there are pockets of other neighborhoods -- like Port Richmond in lower NE Phila -- that also have Italian-Americans (and Rocky's house was in Port Richmond). Generally, different ethnic groups stick w/certain neighborhoods and you will not visit those sections unless you know a Philadelphian and they're from there, or know a really good bakery, etc. in those neighborhoods. So coming to Philadelphia as a visitor, you are not likely to go to these neighborhoods and will not get an accurate depiction on the existing ethnic groups.
