The word "eldergay"

Does it wound?

• Elder in many communities is a term of respect. If you're disrespect age, it doesn't come from the word. Two cliche's come to mind: it beats the alternative and sooner or later, with good fortune, all of you will be an elder.

• We just had a thread on this. Nonetheless, I like the term and I like R1's response: if don't respect age you're not going to like the term. Lesbian culture embraces the wisdom of the elders, once you get through the hot and heavy hormonal years, and women are seen as viable partners well into their older years. Trust me, I know. Sadly, gay male culture doesn't share this view, although I'm sure many of my fellow DLers are exceptions to this rule. Not putting down the guys, just an observation.

• I think it's meant to hurt. The kind of gays here on DL are terrified of getting old and also fear lack of acceptance. I think a lot of gays feel ugly inside so they have a HUGE obsession about other people's looks (too fat, too ugly etc.) & tell themselves that this generation (whatever that is- 20? 25? 35?) is different and that all their problems will disappear in time. Especially when elders gay & straight die. But the attitudes are often backward, narrow minded thinking.

• There must be a 90 day time limit on banned threads because, I believe, that this thread was given the "no longer exists" treatment but it has been successfully resurrected. I like the term and find not only no offense but it represents the graying of the gay population. Contrary to much crap put out that the unhealthy gay "lifestyle" leads to early death, plenty of us are marching into older age quite well.

• It doesn't bother me, and as a term I find it somewhat respectful and endearing. It's often used on DL to be nasty, but in that context, it just sounds ridiculous and makes the person using it look like an asshole.

• I'm 48, and thought the elder gay thing was amusing and harmless, and it seemed to be embraced by many of us oldies. Not sure why the webbie felt he needed to ban its use.
