There was a show called "He & She" and it had a gay character but because of the era it was only heavily alluded to. Jack Cassidy played the gay fellow. I am including a link.

Who was that woman on [italic]Green Acres[/italic], a carpenter maybe? She went by a man's name, as though in the 1960s a woman just wouldn't work in a building trade, kind of inconceivable.
I'm sorry to be so vague, but I haven't seen it since I was a kid. A friend and I were wondering whether she was supposed to be a lesbian, and whether adults at the time recognized her as such.

The father from THE HOGAN FAMILY. He was a hot hunky airplane pilot (we all know about the gay use of airport restrooms), but never showed any interest in women once his so-called wife Valerie walked off the show!
he lived with his sister (Sandy Duncan) and his 3sons. The oldest, Jasan Bateman, definitely showed gay tendencies. No straight teen is that cute, witty and sneaky.

I know Dr. Smith was mentioned, but he was such a pedophile - always chasing after young William - both in this skin tight clothes. He ignored hot and hunky major West and spent all his time panting after Will. I don't know if mom (June Lockheart) did a bed check. If she had, she probably would have found Dr. Smith and Will in the same bed!

R87, I didn't see how Ralph Furley couldn't be gay with those garish outfits he used to wear.
As for Chandler, wasn't it rumored that the only reason the producers of "Friends" manufactured the Chandler-Monica romance was because they were annoyed that a growing number of viewers felt Chandler and Joey, who already acted like a gay couple anyway, should actually come out as lovers on the show? Putting Chandler with Monica was just a convenient way of moving him out of that apartment with Joey.

r98, I think they originally created the character as gay but rewrote it when (they claim) Matthew Perry was cast because he just didn't seem gay. More likely, the network told them to change the character or drop him - there were no regular gay characters on TV at the time.
I think the Monica-Chandler romance developed because Courteney Cox wanted more to do on the show. She was sick of being the uptight, sexless neurotic so they gave her someone to have sex with.
I think they originally created the character as gay but rewrote it when (they claim) Matthew Perry was cast because he just didn't seem gay. More likely, the network told them to change the character or drop him - there were no regular gay characters on TV at the time.
I wouldn't doubt this is true. I remember when the producers of "Fame" chickened out (or were forced by NBC) and changed Montgomery, who was gay in the movie, into a straight character for the series. (This was, after all, the early '80s.)
In the last episode Roseanne revealed that Jackie was a lesbian. I wonder if She originally wanted her sister to be a lesbian on the show, like Roseanne's real sister and the networks wouldn't go for it, like Friends.
Don't know about that but do remember reading that Roseanne had wanted to reveal DJ to be gay in the show's final season but ABC said no bleepin' way.

Most of the posters on this thread seem to find it difficult to know the character from the actor. For example, Zelda Gilroy was most assuredly heterosexual, but the actor, known as Sheila James at that time, who played the part is homosexual. And I am not saying anything about Tom Selleck, but the character Thomas Magnum was a closeted homosexual, the boytoy of Robin Masters.

A third Tony Randall character: The one in Love, Sydney.
And I don't remember that Jackie was revealed to be gay in the last episode. I remember that Roseanne all along wanted either DJ or Darlene to be gay, and the studio said no way, Jose.

r149, the story was that Roseanne wanted to make DJ gay earlier in the run but when the actor heard, he went to her and begged her not to. Playing a giant geek was rough enough on him and he thought playing a gay geek would kill him.

R157in the TV movie pilot for Love, Sidney, Tony Randall's character was gay and there were discreet references to the fact. NBC also said the character was gay in the publicity material. By the time the series premiered, however, NBC and/or the producers had obviously had second thoughts and the fact that he was gay was never referred to in any way. Sidney became just a lonely old batchelor.

A few have already been mentioned, but still:
Faith - Her crush on Buffy was so obvious it hurt lol.
Lenny and Carl in The Simpsons - They've kind of joked about it a few times, but I don't think they've ever said it.
The daughter in American Dad who's name is escaping me right now - IIRC it's been implied she's bi at least.
The title characters in Scott and Bailey, although Rachel more than Janet - what is it with police dramas featuring two women always being super lesbian seeming? See also Rizzoli and Isles, and Cagney and Lacey as has already been mentioned.
Sgt. Hathaway from Lewis - He's certainly curious, based on a couple of episodes.
Velma from Scooby Doo - Should go without saying i think. I get the feeling that the reason she was paired with Shaggy was to shut people up about it lol.
Fred from Scooby Doo - Daphne's a beard.
Pretty much anyone in Torchwood - IIRC it's been claimed that everyone is bisexual. I think only Gwen hasn't had an on screen same sex romance.
Amy Pond from Dr Who - probably bi anyway, flirts with a clone of herself at one point.
Ace from Dr Who - was written as a lesbian by at least one of the writers.
Luke from Sarah Jane Adventures - Apparently had the series not had to finish because Elizabeth Sladen died it was intended for him to come out as gay. IIRC Sarah Jane was implied to be bi as well.
Ashley Spinelli from Recess - you just know she's growing up to be an Ellen Page type lesbian.
Margery Tryell from Game of Thrones is implied to be bi.
And not on TV: I always assumed that Sunny Smiles and Trudy from the game Fallout: New Vegas were intended to be a couple (The run a bar together and share a house, and don't have any other love interests). What's odd though is that there are some other lesbians / bi women in the game (Veronica, Betsy, etc).
Lara Croft from the 2013 Tomb Raider reboot - basically confirmed by the writer.

R246 doesn't understand any of our deep insight into these fictional charaters! We're not just naming any old maids or aging bachelors, we're naming characters who display disinterest in the opposite sex, gender non-conforming characteristics, or some kind of deep attachment to someone of the same sex.
Like Mr. Spock, who blew off his hot fiancee to devote himself to Captain Kirk. Or the Skipper and Gilligan, who lived as life partners and who never once looked at Ginger Grand's cleavage. Or Doctor Smith of "Lost In Space", who flamed brighter than the Jupiter II.

Once, on the defunct TWOP message boards, I remember someone posting that Dr. Quest and Race Bannon were a gay couple on the old Jonny Quest cartoon show. There's no way in hell it was intended in a 1960s children's show, but I never forgot that post because it made so much sense. Dr Quest and Race were always sharing a room. Race was supposed to be Jonny's bodyguard, but seeing as how he was kidnapped in literally every episode, Race clearly wasn't being kept around for his guarding skills. Even Hadji the Indian kid seemed kinda gay.

Ralph of "Ralph and Alph" on Green Acres was definitely a lesbian. Why do you think she was always walking in on the glamorous Lisa Douglas in her boudoir and eyeing Lisa in her sensual marabou lingerie?
All that talk Alf did about men was just her effort to fit in - there was no LGBT scene in Hootersville!
"Now Dahlin', I don't vant to de-dyke you. I had many lesbian friends back in Budapest, I just vant to do something lovely vit your hair, so you can meet a nice girl."

I agree, R278, I always thought that shower scene that Lucy and Viv did on the Lucy Show was very sappho-erotic in a "My Personal Best" kind of way....
You know, as much as it could be in the 1960s on TV....
Just two gals, living together, trying to make ends meet...if you know what I mean.

I see what you mean about Lucy and Viv.
Now, I wonder if Rob Petrie was the only one who appreciated how Laura's Capri Pants cupped her tight little ass?
Millie was very butch, now that I think of it.

The Adam 12 guys were definitely sleeping together.
I always believed at the end of the series, Officer Pete Malloy got Officer Jim Reed to move into an apartment in West Hollywood with him.

Johnny Quest was the gayest cartoon ever. I don't think I ever saw an episode with a woman in it. Even Bandit the dog was "exuberant".

The Baldwin sisters. Once they started on Papa's Recipe, you wouldn't believe what went on in that house! Ashley Longworth, Miss Emily's long-lost beau? A smokescreen! And Corabeth and Ike Godsey were beards for each other.

Ralph Monroe the carpenter was ANYTHING BUT gay. She was all over all the men including Oliver.

Jeremy Lloyd who created Are You Being Served said Mr Humphries was never intended to be gay, he was written to be a mama's boy and the first series definitely shows this. After that Lloyd said, they just played the gay thing for laughs whenever a joke was good and that pretty much says it all, as most of the Humphries jokes were "is he or isn't he" type of jokes.

Yeah, I was going to say this too. Ralph was totally man crazy, that's like saying Miss Jane was gay. Nancy Kulp was but her character Miss Jane was definitely straight.
Howard Sprague and Goober Pyle.
Howard reeked of being gay but Goober never did. He was just simple and he always was chasing skirts. Howard was a big nancy, momma's boy.
I think they originally created the character as gay but rewrote it when (they claim) Matthew Perry was cast because he just didn't seem gay. More likely, the network told them to change the character or drop him - there were no regular gay characters on TV at the time.
Craig Bierko originally got the part and turned it down. I doubt it was supposed to be gay because Craig doesn't give off any gay vibes, while Perry does. Makes no sense.
That "L" monogram Laverne always wore on her shirts didn't stand for "Laverne," if you know what I mean.
