TV Characters Who Are/Were Unoffically Gay

Answers to this thread starts with the majority of the single men on [italic]The Andy Griffith Show[/italic].

Who else?

by Anonymousreply 310July 8, 2018 10:07 PM

My Two Dads.

by Anonymousreply 1October 18, 2011 11:24 PM

Niles the butler in The Nanny started off gay, but then I don't know what happened.

by Anonymousreply 2October 18, 2011 11:28 PM

Frasier and Niles Crane of course.

Uncle Arthur.

Dr. Bellowes, despite the presence of his wife (who seemed like a bossy faghag)

Jack Benny

Alexis Carrington Colby etc.... seemed much more like a bitchy man-obsessed gay man in drag than an actual woman

The Great Gazoo

Any character ever played by Harvey Korman or Bob Newhart

by Anonymousreply 3October 18, 2011 11:35 PM

Emily Hartley

by Anonymousreply 4October 18, 2011 11:35 PM

Nigel Batholomew Smythe

by Anonymousreply 5October 18, 2011 11:40 PM

Monroe on Too Close for Comfort

Floyd the barber

by Anonymousreply 6October 18, 2011 11:44 PM

Mr French

Miss Jane Hathaway

by Anonymousreply 7October 18, 2011 11:48 PM

The Professor on "Gilligan's Island"

There was a show called "He & She" and it had a gay character but because of the era it was only heavily alluded to. Jack Cassidy played the gay fellow. I am including a link.

Who was that woman on [italic]Green Acres[/italic], a carpenter maybe? She went by a man's name, as though in the 1960s a woman just wouldn't work in a building trade, kind of inconceivable.

I'm sorry to be so vague, but I haven't seen it since I was a kid. A friend and I were wondering whether she was supposed to be a lesbian, and whether adults at the time recognized her as such.

by Anonymousreply 9October 18, 2011 11:56 PM

Sheldon owns this thread, dudes.

by Anonymousreply 10October 18, 2011 11:58 PM

R9, wasn't she called Ralph?

by Anonymousreply 11October 19, 2011 12:00 AM

Gil Chesterton on ""Frasier", despite apparently being married to someone named "Deb".

"For your information, I happen to be a happily married man....She is Mrs. Gilbert Leslie Chesterton, a Sarah Lawrence graduate, and the owner of a very successful auto body repair shop. Honestly, the conclusions people make, just because a man dresses well and knows how to use a pastry bag!"

by Anonymousreply 12October 19, 2011 12:01 AM

Chandler Bing (Not so much Joey or Ross. They were just curious)

by Anonymousreply 13October 19, 2011 12:02 AM

Josephine the Lady Plumber.

Mrs. Olson.

Madge the Manicurist.

Cora the Maxwell House Coffee Lady.

by Anonymousreply 14October 19, 2011 12:03 AM

oh and Cliff Clevin.

And I always suspected the neighbor on Home Improvement.

by Anonymousreply 15October 19, 2011 12:03 AM

Monroe on 'Too Close for Comfort'

by Anonymousreply 16October 19, 2011 12:03 AM

Roger "Race" Bannon.

by Anonymousreply 17October 19, 2011 12:06 AM

Richard (Malcolm Gets) on "Caroline in the City"

Officer Pete Malloy (Martin Milner) on "Adam-12"

Gilligan (Bob Denver) on "Gilligan's Island"

by Anonymousreply 18October 19, 2011 12:06 AM

Kenny Bania.

by Anonymousreply 19October 19, 2011 12:07 AM

Ah, Jack Cassidy! So handsome. The kind of guy you'd drag your crippled body across the floor for.

by Anonymousreply 20October 19, 2011 12:07 AM

Definitely both guys on ROUTE 66. (In actuality, one of them was gay and was black listed as a result after that TV show finished its run).

by Anonymousreply 21October 19, 2011 12:08 AM

The bitchy artist on "Caroline in the City" before someone had the bright idea to have him and Caroline fall in love.

by Anonymousreply 22October 19, 2011 12:08 AM

Jo from The Facts of Life had a dykey thing going on, even though she was portrayed to be straight.

by Anonymousreply 23October 19, 2011 12:08 AM

Chandler from Friends.

by Anonymousreply 24October 19, 2011 12:09 AM

Wilma Flintstone's mother

by Anonymousreply 25October 19, 2011 12:12 AM

Darlene from "Roseanne"

by Anonymousreply 26October 19, 2011 12:12 AM

Definitely ALF and Willie had a thing going.

I heard that the actor who portrayed Willie on this innocent 80's sitcom was into heavy meth use and pulling homeless men into some cheap hotel for gay sex - there was actually film of it at one time.

by Anonymousreply 27October 19, 2011 12:12 AM

Howard Sprague and Goober Pyle.

by Anonymousreply 28October 19, 2011 12:15 AM

R17 Dr. Quest and Race Bannon were totally a couple. No mention of a mom ever, they always shared a room and were always too busy offscreen to notice the kids getting kidnapped by natives AGAIN.

by Anonymousreply 29October 19, 2011 12:16 AM

Sheriff Matt Dillon (even Miss Kitty couldn't pry his pants open. That joy was left only to Chester, his deputy sheriff)

Maverick Great with a "gun" but always dressed for dinner.

Roudy Yates from RAWHIDE (Clint Eastwood for that one brief flowering moment when he was beautiful).

Paladin (dressed in all black, have gun will travel).

The Rifleman (even though he had a kid, he wore his jeans just a bit too tight around the ass for any self-respecting straight dude in the wild west).

by Anonymousreply 30October 19, 2011 12:17 AM

Stewie on FAMILY GUY and Roger on AMERICAN DAD.

by Anonymousreply 31October 19, 2011 12:19 AM

The mysterious oldest brother on BONANZA who always wore black and left home suddenly.

by Anonymousreply 32October 19, 2011 12:21 AM

Captain Ovanava (spelling?) on Babylon 5.

by Anonymousreply 33October 19, 2011 12:22 AM

R20, my parents thought this actor was very handsome too. I thought he was ugly. Is this a generational thing? Are you (gasp) an elder gay?

by Anonymousreply 34October 19, 2011 12:23 AM

Ahem

by Anonymousreply 35October 19, 2011 12:25 AM

The bleach blonde detective who worked for PERRY MASON.

by Anonymousreply 36October 19, 2011 12:26 AM

Definitely Mr Whipple who could not free himself from the addiction to squeeze the Charmin bathroom tissue while being used by a male customer.

by Anonymousreply 37October 19, 2011 12:28 AM

Obviously, Batman and Robin (60's show with Adam West hamming it up). Adam West was so gay his costume should have turned pink.

by Anonymousreply 38October 19, 2011 12:31 AM

Half the boy dancers on American Bandstand.

by Anonymousreply 39October 19, 2011 12:33 AM

Definitely the Lion on the WIZARD OF OZ (He even got a pretty bow in his fur after going to the beauty shop in the Emerald City). I apologize for bringing in a movie reference.

by Anonymousreply 40October 19, 2011 12:35 AM

Slater from "Saved By The Bell"

by Anonymousreply 41October 19, 2011 12:36 AM

Christine Cagney.

by Anonymousreply 42October 19, 2011 12:37 AM

Thanks, R11, I think it was Ralph.
Dr. Quest and Race Bannon were totally a couple

In one jungle episode, Race's old girlfriend Jade turns up. Total beard.

by Anonymousreply 43October 19, 2011 12:38 AM

Fred Mertz - he was always putting down his wife Ethel physically and showing remorse over their ill-timed marriage! (the ultimate eldergay).

by Anonymousreply 44October 19, 2011 12:39 AM

Howie Dickerson on "The Paul Lynde Show" - played by hunky blond John Calvin.

Richie Cunningham's older brother, Chuck, who went upstairs in one "Happy Days" episode and never came down again.

Alfred Prinzmetal, played by Marvin Kaplan, on "Meet Millie."

Tony Randall as Harvey Weskitt on "Mr. Peepers"

Steve Valentine as Dr. Nigel Townsend on "Crossing Jordan."

Zasu Pitts as Elvira "Nugey" Nugent on "Oh, Susanna" aka "The Gale Storm Show."

by Anonymousreply 45October 19, 2011 12:40 AM

Onslow from the BBC's KEEPING UP APPEARANCES. He had no sexual interest in his wife, but was strangely interested in Hyacinth's husband.

by Anonymousreply 46October 19, 2011 12:41 AM

Heath Barkley.

by Anonymousreply 47October 19, 2011 12:42 AM

Mr. Wilson from Dennis the Menace

by Anonymousreply 48October 19, 2011 12:42 AM

R45 Woe! You are hitting some extremely ancient territory! When was all this stuff on TV, in the late 40s?

by Anonymousreply 49October 19, 2011 12:44 AM

Adam Carrington.

by Anonymousreply 50October 19, 2011 12:44 AM

This thread is all about James West.

by Anonymousreply 51October 19, 2011 12:46 AM

R21, I used to fantasize about the Route 66 guys doing each other

by Anonymousreply 52October 19, 2011 12:47 AM

Murray, the witty copy writer on the MARY TYLOR MOORE show in the 70's.

by Anonymousreply 53October 19, 2011 12:48 AM

Has anyone mentioned Alice, the Brady Bunch housekeeper, yet? Definitely a lezzy. Forget about Sam the butcher - he was just a beard.

by Anonymousreply 54October 19, 2011 12:48 AM

Fred Flinstone and Barney Rubble.

by Anonymousreply 55October 19, 2011 12:50 AM

Bigger beards: Irene and Frank Lorenzo.

by Anonymousreply 56October 19, 2011 12:51 AM

Ed Norton

by Anonymousreply 57October 19, 2011 12:52 AM

R52 Who didn't?

by Anonymousreply 58October 19, 2011 12:52 AM

R57 Ed Norton? ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww. He was definitely Trixie's bitch.

by Anonymousreply 59October 19, 2011 12:54 AM

Laverne and Shirley (hasbian)

by Anonymousreply 60October 19, 2011 12:56 AM

Murphy Brown

by Anonymousreply 61October 19, 2011 12:56 AM

Blanket statement: Every good looking designer or contractor or realtor on HGTV - so gay.

by Anonymousreply 62October 19, 2011 12:56 AM

Dr. Smith from Lost in Space.

by Anonymousreply 63October 19, 2011 12:57 AM

Dr. Bellows on Bewitched

by Anonymousreply 64October 19, 2011 12:58 AM

Uncle Martin (from MY FAVORITE MARTIAN)

by Anonymousreply 65October 19, 2011 12:58 AM

That "L" monogram Laverne always wore on her shirts didn't stand for "Laverne," if you know what I mean.

by Anonymousreply 66October 19, 2011 12:59 AM

Anthony (Meshach Taylor) on 'Designing Women' was the biggest queen on 80s TV. I can't believe they expected audiences to think he was straight.

by Anonymousreply 67October 19, 2011 1:01 AM

Bugs Bunny - no straight rabbit enjoys doing drag the way Bugs did.

by Anonymousreply 68October 19, 2011 1:03 AM

Emmet, the always-anxious nelly neighbor on the BBC sitcom KEEPING UP APPEARANCES.

by Anonymousreply 69October 19, 2011 1:06 AM

Mrs. Trumble: what never came out in the series was that she, too, was an American expat in Paris after the Great War and had had a torrid lesbian menage a trois with Gertrude and Alice. The babysitting gig at the Ricardos was cover for the May December romance she was carrying on with Lucy.

by Anonymousreply 70October 19, 2011 1:06 AM

Here's a real oldy and moldy: Bachelor Father!

by Anonymousreply 71October 19, 2011 1:07 AM

The Vicar in TO THE MANOR BORN.

by Anonymousreply 72October 19, 2011 1:08 AM

Mr. Merryweather, you are such a card! I hope the astrological signs are OK for you to be gossiping with us right now. God Bless Tilly!

by Anonymousreply 73October 19, 2011 1:10 AM

Mr. Belvedere: Total kid-diddler who only took the job so he could get into little Wesley's Underoos.

by Anonymousreply 74October 19, 2011 1:10 AM

The father from THE HOGAN FAMILY. He was a hot hunky airplane pilot (we all know about the gay use of airport restrooms), but never showed any interest in women once his so-called wife Valerie walked off the show!

he lived with his sister (Sandy Duncan) and his 3sons. The oldest, Jasan Bateman, definitely showed gay tendencies. No straight teen is that cute, witty and sneaky.

by Anonymousreply 75October 19, 2011 1:14 AM

I know Dr. Smith was mentioned, but he was such a pedophile - always chasing after young William - both in this skin tight clothes. He ignored hot and hunky major West and spent all his time panting after Will. I don't know if mom (June Lockheart) did a bed check. If she had, she probably would have found Dr. Smith and Will in the same bed!

by Anonymousreply 76October 19, 2011 1:19 AM

R64, Dr Bombay, bewitched....wasn't Dr Bellows on I Dream of Jeannie?

by Anonymousreply 77October 19, 2011 1:19 AM

Not really R34. I was just making a snarky reference to a rather infamous Cole Porter/Jack Cassidy story I heard once.

I'm 45. Does that qualify for eldergay? I used to fantasize about Cassidy's sons when I was a kid.

by Anonymousreply 78October 19, 2011 1:21 AM

Lyle Wagner from the Carol Burnett Show. Woof!

by Anonymousreply 79October 19, 2011 1:21 AM

I still think Jason Bateman is gay.

by Anonymousreply 80October 19, 2011 1:22 AM

Squiggy had a thing for Lenny's obvious trouser snake.

Stoooopid.

by Anonymousreply 81October 19, 2011 1:24 AM

R78, around DL, being 22 is eldergay. They keep lowering the age so everyone out of kindergarden will be an eldergay. Being in your 40's (gasp! I have to breath deeply! Get some control back....) is definitely eldergay.

by Anonymousreply 82October 19, 2011 1:25 AM

Mr. Rogers

by Anonymousreply 83October 19, 2011 1:27 AM

Wally Cleaver was very hot as the older brother on LEAVE IT TO BEAVER. I always fantasized about Ward Cleaver (a rather handsome dad for the 50's) and Eddie Haskell getting together in the tool shed for some recreational sodomy, while Wally secretly watched and jacked off.

Meanwhile, Beaver was in the kitchen with Mrs. Cleaver creating little crucifix cookies.

by Anonymousreply 84October 19, 2011 1:29 AM

Balkie

by Anonymousreply 85October 19, 2011 1:34 AM

Ponch and Jon. I wanted to see Jon sucking on Ponch's uncut cock.

by Anonymousreply 86October 19, 2011 1:38 AM

Yes, Chandler Bing was sooooo gay.

I add Mr. Stanley Roper to the list. Never wanted to sleep with his wife, and his homophobia revealed more than he realized.

by Anonymousreply 87October 19, 2011 1:42 AM

Race Bannon and Dr. Quest on "Johnny Quest". This was parodied on "Harvey Birdman"

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 88October 19, 2011 1:43 AM

Michael on "Good Times"

by Anonymousreply 89October 19, 2011 1:45 AM

R87, I didn't see how Ralph Furley couldn't be gay with those garish outfits he used to wear.

As for Chandler, wasn't it rumored that the only reason the producers of "Friends" manufactured the Chandler-Monica romance was because they were annoyed that a growing number of viewers felt Chandler and Joey, who already acted like a gay couple anyway, should actually come out as lovers on the show? Putting Chandler with Monica was just a convenient way of moving him out of that apartment with Joey.

by Anonymousreply 90October 19, 2011 1:57 AM

Bill Bixby, may he rest in peace, on every show he was ever in.

Tim O'Hara on My Favorite Martian, Tom Corbett on The Courtship of Eddie's Father and Dr. David Banner on The Incredible Hulk.

I had a major crush on him when I was a very young boy and he was on My Favorite Martian.

by Anonymousreply 91October 19, 2011 2:08 AM

I can't believe Fred McMurray and William Demerest were really getting it on in My Three Sons, but they were certainly both gay.

At least until Fred took Beverly Garland as a beard.

by Anonymousreply 92October 19, 2011 2:10 AM

Gilligan and the Skipper.

by Anonymousreply 93October 19, 2011 2:15 AM

George Michael on Arrested Development.

by Anonymousreply 94October 19, 2011 2:20 AM

Elmer Fudd and Bugs Bunny.

by Anonymousreply 95October 19, 2011 2:22 AM

What? No love for Bert & Ernie?

by Anonymousreply 96October 19, 2011 2:27 AM

"Bill Bixby, may he rest in peace, on every show he was ever in."

I Remember Bill in a 1970's show called "The Magician". Does that make me an eldergay?

by Anonymousreply 97October 19, 2011 2:31 AM

I thought Chandler was suppose to be a gay character but the creators change their minds in the last min?

by Anonymousreply 98October 19, 2011 2:32 AM

Eddie Haskell. You always knew he was up to something perverted.

by Anonymousreply 99October 19, 2011 2:52 AM

Nick and Cody on Riptide. They shared a bedroom on a yacht!!

by Anonymousreply 100October 19, 2011 4:27 AM

R99, I do not consider being gay "perverted". In fact, I consider it an insult to everyone else who had to read that on DL.

by Anonymousreply 101October 19, 2011 4:32 AM

Captain Kangaroo

by Anonymousreply 102October 19, 2011 4:38 AM

R100 gives me a boner - Perry King and Joe Penny sleeping together!

by Anonymousreply 103October 19, 2011 10:05 AM

-The Fonz. (Why else would the bathroom be his "office"?) -Velma from Scooby Doo. -Mr. Peanut -Higgins from Magnum P.I.

by Anonymousreply 104October 19, 2011 10:06 AM

r98, I think they originally created the character as gay but rewrote it when (they claim) Matthew Perry was cast because he just didn't seem gay. More likely, the network told them to change the character or drop him - there were no regular gay characters on TV at the time.

I think the Monica-Chandler romance developed because Courteney Cox wanted more to do on the show. She was sick of being the uptight, sexless neurotic so they gave her someone to have sex with.

by Anonymousreply 105October 19, 2011 10:23 AM

Felix Unger

by Anonymousreply 106October 19, 2011 10:44 AM

"The Adventures of Tugboat Annie"

by Anonymousreply 107October 19, 2011 10:45 AM

Nigel, Asa Buchanan's butler on "One Life to Live."

by Anonymousreply 108October 19, 2011 11:29 AM

The Niles and Frasier Crane Award is given each year to the most obviously gay character who isn't gay on a television series.

Are there any nominees on this year's new shows?

by Anonymousreply 109October 19, 2011 11:33 AM

Snagglepuss was pink and had gay voice.

Velma from Scooby Doo was clearly a lesbian.

Mr. Peabody the little dog was gay.

by Anonymousreply 110October 19, 2011 11:51 AM

The neighbor kid on "Suburgatory" who moves like a gay stripper.

Bert and Ernie on Sesame Street

Barney

by Anonymousreply 113October 19, 2011 1:53 PM
Almost every character on "The Drew Carey Show"

Wasn't Drew's brother on the show a transvestite or possibly a transexual?

by Anonymousreply 115October 19, 2011 2:35 PM

Steve McGarrett and Danny "Dano" Williams from the new "Hawaii 5-O". The ex-wife and all the girlfriends are bears.

by Anonymousreply 116October 19, 2011 2:50 PM

Darlene from "Roseanne"

And Jackie too. In the last episode Roseanne revealed that Jackie was a lesbian. I wonder if She originally wanted her sister to be a lesbian on the show, like Roseanne's real sister and the networks wouldn't go for it, like Friends.

by Anonymousreply 117October 19, 2011 3:38 PM

Claymore Gregg, on "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir."

by Anonymousreply 118October 19, 2011 3:40 PM

by Anonymousreply 125October 19, 2011 6:29 PM

by Anonymousreply 126October 19, 2011 8:39 PM

R126, what is your tv character contribution?

by Anonymousreply 127October 19, 2011 8:49 PM

by Anonymousreply 139October 19, 2011 9:23 PM

Uncle Charley on "My Three Sons". Always in the kitchen wearing an apron and bitching about kids tracking up his clean floor! What an old queen! Also, Mr. Mooney on "The Lucy Show". Pretty much any character that Gale Gordon played was gay.
I think they originally created the character as gay but rewrote it when (they claim) Matthew Perry was cast because he just didn't seem gay. More likely, the network told them to change the character or drop him - there were no regular gay characters on TV at the time.

I wouldn't doubt this is true. I remember when the producers of "Fame" chickened out (or were forced by NBC) and changed Montgomery, who was gay in the movie, into a straight character for the series. (This was, after all, the early '80s.)
In the last episode Roseanne revealed that Jackie was a lesbian. I wonder if She originally wanted her sister to be a lesbian on the show, like Roseanne's real sister and the networks wouldn't go for it, like Friends.

Don't know about that but do remember reading that Roseanne had wanted to reveal DJ to be gay in the show's final season but ABC said no bleepin' way.

by Anonymousreply 154October 20, 2011 11:33 AM

R152, gee, I wonder why Emmett is divorced? Of course, we all know that no man who gets married is gay, is he? (Rolling my eyes)

This guy plays the role in such a nelly way that he would be one of the most strange straight men in England.

by Anonymousreply 155October 20, 2011 6:26 PM

Most of the posters on this thread seem to find it difficult to know the character from the actor. For example, Zelda Gilroy was most assuredly heterosexual, but the actor, known as Sheila James at that time, who played the part is homosexual. And I am not saying anything about Tom Selleck, but the character Thomas Magnum was a closeted homosexual, the boytoy of Robin Masters.

by Anonymousreply 156January 3, 2013 7:35 PM

A third Tony Randall character: The one in Love, Sydney.

And I don't remember that Jackie was revealed to be gay in the last episode. I remember that Roseanne all along wanted either DJ or Darlene to be gay, and the studio said no way, Jose.

by Anonymousreply 157January 3, 2013 10:01 PM

r149, the story was that Roseanne wanted to make DJ gay earlier in the run but when the actor heard, he went to her and begged her not to. Playing a giant geek was rough enough on him and he thought playing a gay geek would kill him.

R157in the TV movie pilot for Love, Sidney, Tony Randall's character was gay and there were discreet references to the fact. NBC also said the character was gay in the publicity material. By the time the series premiered, however, NBC and/or the producers had obviously had second thoughts and the fact that he was gay was never referred to in any way. Sidney became just a lonely old batchelor.

by Anonymousreply 202March 6, 2015 12:32 AM

R8, actually the Professor of Gilligan's Island had a son who died of AIDS early into the history of the disease. I recall him being interviewed about it years later on TV, and he had to wipe away the tears from his eyes. It was heartbreaking.

R204, you and I need to take this to another thread (and not hijack this one) but I couldn't agree more -- Dr. Smith completely RUINED that show and I never even realized it until I watched it as an adult.

by Anonymousreply 206March 6, 2015 1:59 AM

Dr. Smith was originally intended to be a minor character and the other adults who were hired to be the stars were very angry and upset when his audience response prompted the producers to feature him at their expense.

by Anonymousreply 226March 6, 2015 8:45 AM

A few have already been mentioned, but still:

Faith - Her crush on Buffy was so obvious it hurt lol.

Lenny and Carl in The Simpsons - They've kind of joked about it a few times, but I don't think they've ever said it.

The daughter in American Dad who's name is escaping me right now - IIRC it's been implied she's bi at least.

The title characters in Scott and Bailey, although Rachel more than Janet - what is it with police dramas featuring two women always being super lesbian seeming? See also Rizzoli and Isles, and Cagney and Lacey as has already been mentioned.

Sgt. Hathaway from Lewis - He's certainly curious, based on a couple of episodes.

Velma from Scooby Doo - Should go without saying i think. I get the feeling that the reason she was paired with Shaggy was to shut people up about it lol.

Fred from Scooby Doo - Daphne's a beard.

Pretty much anyone in Torchwood - IIRC it's been claimed that everyone is bisexual. I think only Gwen hasn't had an on screen same sex romance.

Amy Pond from Dr Who - probably bi anyway, flirts with a clone of herself at one point.

Ace from Dr Who - was written as a lesbian by at least one of the writers.

Luke from Sarah Jane Adventures - Apparently had the series not had to finish because Elizabeth Sladen died it was intended for him to come out as gay. IIRC Sarah Jane was implied to be bi as well.

Ashley Spinelli from Recess - you just know she's growing up to be an Ellen Page type lesbian.

Margery Tryell from Game of Thrones is implied to be bi.

And not on TV: I always assumed that Sunny Smiles and Trudy from the game Fallout: New Vegas were intended to be a couple (The run a bar together and share a house, and don't have any other love interests). What's odd though is that there are some other lesbians / bi women in the game (Veronica, Betsy, etc).

Lara Croft from the 2013 Tomb Raider reboot - basically confirmed by the writer.

4. no females other than his sisters and mother to date

Ming Na's character was a lez on Stargate Universe.

Even though Commander Tucker was a pussy hound on Star Trek Enterprise, I think he and Captain Archer had something going. I can see Commander Reed joining the fun too.

Aeryn Sun from Farscape was bi. Toward the end of the series we meet an ex girlfriend.

There is another thread about the difference between US and European gays.

The main difference is that in the US, older single people are automatically under 'suspicions."

Unmarried = Gay in the US.

Same sex relations = Gay in Europe.

by Anonymousreply 246March 7, 2015 2:26 PM

R246 doesn't understand any of our deep insight into these fictional charaters! We're not just naming any old maids or aging bachelors, we're naming characters who display disinterest in the opposite sex, gender non-conforming characteristics, or some kind of deep attachment to someone of the same sex.

Like Mr. Spock, who blew off his hot fiancee to devote himself to Captain Kirk. Or the Skipper and Gilligan, who lived as life partners and who never once looked at Ginger Grand's cleavage. Or Doctor Smith of "Lost In Space", who flamed brighter than the Jupiter II.

Once, on the defunct TWOP message boards, I remember someone posting that Dr. Quest and Race Bannon were a gay couple on the old Jonny Quest cartoon show. There's no way in hell it was intended in a 1960s children's show, but I never forgot that post because it made so much sense. Dr Quest and Race were always sharing a room. Race was supposed to be Jonny's bodyguard, but seeing as how he was kidnapped in literally every episode, Race clearly wasn't being kept around for his guarding skills. Even Hadji the Indian kid seemed kinda gay.

You know, as much as it could be in the 1960s on TV....

Just two gals, living together, trying to make ends meet...if you know what I mean.

I see what you mean about Lucy and Viv.

Now, I wonder if Rob Petrie was the only one who appreciated how Laura's Capri Pants cupped her tight little ass?

Millie was very butch, now that I think of it.

The Adam 12 guys were definitely sleeping together.

I always believed at the end of the series, Officer Pete Malloy got Officer Jim Reed to move into an apartment in West Hollywood with him.
there was no LGBT scene in Hootersville!

I'm willing to bet there was at least one adult bookstore in Pixley.

Johnny Quest was the gayest cartoon ever. I don't think I ever saw an episode with a woman in it. Even Bandit the dog was "exuberant".

The Baldwin sisters. Once they started on Papa's Recipe, you wouldn't believe what went on in that house! Ashley Longworth, Miss Emily's long-lost beau? A smokescreen! And Corabeth and Ike Godsey were beards for each other.

Ralph Monroe the carpenter was ANYTHING BUT gay. She was all over all the men including Oliver.

by Anonymousreply 301February 14, 2018 3:45 PM

Jeremy Lloyd who created Are You Being Served said Mr Humphries was never intended to be gay, he was written to be a mama's boy and the first series definitely shows this. After that Lloyd said, they just played the gay thing for laughs whenever a joke was good and that pretty much says it all, as most of the Humphries jokes were "is he or isn't he" type of jokes.

Yeah, I was going to say this too. Ralph was totally man crazy, that's like saying Miss Jane was gay. Nancy Kulp was but her character Miss Jane was definitely straight.
Howard Sprague and Goober Pyle.

Howard reeked of being gay but Goober never did. He was just simple and he always was chasing skirts. Howard was a big nancy, momma's boy.
I think they originally created the character as gay but rewrote it when (they claim) Matthew Perry was cast because he just didn't seem gay. More likely, the network told them to change the character or drop him - there were no regular gay characters on TV at the time.

Craig Bierko originally got the part and turned it down. I doubt it was supposed to be gay because Craig doesn't give off any gay vibes, while Perry does. Makes no sense.
That "L" monogram Laverne always wore on her shirts didn't stand for "Laverne," if you know what I mean.

I'm gonna rip the L right off her chest (Rosie Greenbaum before she was Rosie)
