Merlin - the TV Show

Who for fuck''s sake decided on Angel Coulby as Gweneviere?? Gwen is supposed to be the most important female character in that series (with Morgana) so one would think she''d be the most beautiful thing out there. But now she''s just so damn plain. She''s almost ugly. How are we supposed to believe both Arthur and Lancelot are in love with this woman??%0D\ %0D\ Why her????

• I like her, but maybe Lenora Chrichlow from Being Human would have been a better choice.

• Can anyone give me a reasonable, logical explanation for choosing a woman of color to play Guinevere? And where, in any written accounts of her character, was there ever any mention of her being a Moor?\ \ Not a race-bait troll, only asking a simple, honest question.

• That''s creative interpretation to set the show apart from other previous Merlin interpretations.\ \ Has the new season started in the UK?\ \ I''m kind of miffed that the Starz version was cancelled. Eva Green was imho amazing as Morgan.

• R5, well you realize that the Merlin of legend isn't supposed to be of the same age as Arthur, and didn't work as his manservant? And that Uther Pendragon didn't have a vendetta against magic? etc. - the show is full of "creative interpretations" that veer very far from Arthurian lore. That Guinevere (or any of the cast) is a person of color is frankly the least of the show's deviations.%0D %0D The show's really more of a re-imagining that takes characters and stories people are familiar with, and mixes up their roles and relationships to see what new stories and dynamics they can come up with, and I think that's more than fine. I actually like the concept of having Guinevere be a plucky servant girl instead of starting out as entitled royalty, and I'm also fine with her not being a legendary beauty, in that Arthur should fall in love with her strength of character rather than being dazzled by her looks.%0D %0D It's just that the show's execution has been a bit ham-handed as of late, and Gwen's character especially is either never on-screen, or else stuck in awful romance scenes where she acts like a sap instead of the more level-headed character she originally played. Also, the show really doesn't know what to do with the whole Lancelot thing, since Gwen vows her undying love for him one episode, then forgets him a few episodes later. The lack of coherence for the show's writing is unfortunate, since I do think the ideas behind the show are interesting, and for the most part the cast is likeable (and attractive).

• The powers that be made Merlin young and handsome to attract a youthful demographic. It''s the same thing that happened when they made King Henry VIII a hunk in "The Tudors."

• Accept or reject this show on it''s own terms, and don''t worry about the deviations from legend. Guinevere the name means The White Enchantress, or The White Ghost, and she is usually interpreted as a pale beauty. But if an actress of color works in the context of this telling, so what?\ \ And Merlin of legend actually engineered Arthur''s birth, by transforming Uther into the appearance of Gorlois, Duke of Cornwall and Ygraine''s first husband, so that Uther can deceive her into having sex with him, thus impregnating her with Arthur.

• Guinevere is a knock-out compared to the jug-eared stick insect in the title role.\ \ Arthur is hot.

• I have to agree with r10. It allways takes me two episodes of the new season to get used to the ugly dork style of Merlin. Out of the show the actor looks so much better (and his accent is just to die for).

• Oh get over yourself, OP. She looks fine and is a good actress. She doesn''t have to be a damn supermodel.

• I can't concentrate 100% because of Angel. Were they in trouble with financing? I love everything...but she is so not realistic for the role. Angel looks ok but Guinevere is not supposed to look just fine but fantastic. Whenever I watch the show, I should creat an imaginary attractive queen and hypnotize myself.

• Lol at all these people. Angel coulby is the ugliest woman on the planet. There is no part of her that is good looking. Her hair is horrible her eyes are ugly her skin color is ugly her big nose is ugly her weird lips are ugly her body figure is ugly. Merlin cute? Lol ugly stick figure whats he way 110? Arthur hot? Lol maybe in england. He has horrible crooked teeth a skinny pale body with no muscles and an ugly face.

• Guinevere in Merlin is extremelty disappointing on so many levels. She is not desirable to look at; therefore does not fit the part of romantic fantasy required for the storyline. Angel Coulby's presence is very forgettable and the acting is below rate. One must look past her to enjoy the show which is sad because the audience should be endeared to her.
