The Beach Boys

Do gay guys like them or it is just mostly straight dudes?

by Anonymousreply 38November 9, 2019 3:24 AM

They were really great at their prime--a lot of energy onstage that can't be faked.%0D %0D Gay interest: Dennis Wilson was about as handsome a man as I've ever seen.%0D %0D At the link, a live "I Get Around" from the T.A.M.I. Show. This doesn't sound stale at all, oddly enough.

Very childish and naive music. Can't imagine gays would be interested.

by Anonymousreply 2June 21, 2011 3:32 AM

Love them and their music. Brian was handsome and Dennis was hot.

Brian did not have the advantage of someone like John Lennon and George Martin around. Brian pretty much did most of it himself. Not to take away the others contributions...

He was the modern American Musical Genius.

Rubber Soul - Pet Sounds - Sgt. Pepper.

I always wondered what would have happened if "Smile" had been finished and properly released...

by Anonymousreply 3June 21, 2011 3:36 AM

Intelligent gays who know music are interested.

by Anonymousreply 4June 21, 2011 3:37 AM

The Beach Boys are musically amazing. Yeah, some of their early songs were kind of juvenile, but Brian Wilson was and still is a musical genius. I'm 32 years old, and I love watching old Beach Boys clips. Here's one of my favorites. Carl looks so cute (yes, I like smooshy guys). Al Jardine is already rocking the combover, and Mike Love looks like the Unabomber (and is likely stoned out of his mind in the clip). This song is just killer. Love it. It's not actually written by the Beach boys, but it's still a great recording of them.

Who?

by Anonymousreply 6June 21, 2011 3:53 AM

Love The Beach Boys. "In My Room" is classic pop music.

by Anonymousreply 7June 21, 2011 4:01 AM

you gotta separate "Pet Sounds" from anything else they did paticularly there earlier songs and surfer image.

by Anonymousreply 8June 21, 2011 4:07 AM

R2 is an idiot.

by Anonymousreply 9June 21, 2011 4:09 AM

Good Vibrations was one of the best songs of the 60s and still holds up. %0D %0D Surf's Up is a great album.

by Anonymousreply 10June 21, 2011 4:12 AM

Big crush on Dennis.

When I was in the third grade, my older brother and I got the idea to steal reflectors off of bikes - then sell them until we had enough money to go to CA to see The Beach Boys.

That's correct. Not exactly a couple of budding geniuses (or criminals, for that matter.)

We did have those groovy surfer shirts though. Big red & white stripes with a Henley collar.

by Anonymousreply 11June 21, 2011 4:12 AM

Back in the 80s, Doonesbury had a gay character, Andy. He developed AIDS, and Joanie looked after him. He'd been waiting for [italic]Pet Sounds[/italic] to come out on CD, and died while listening to the CD.

by Anonymousreply 12June 21, 2011 4:15 AM

"Feel Flows" is one of my favorite songs ever. Love. It. And on a gay note, I also love "The Monkey's Uncle" and the fact that they sing it with Annette Funicello.

by Anonymousreply 13June 21, 2011 4:16 AM

Love them. The greatest rock band in history. Better than Ringo and his friends. %0D %0D Pet Sounds is pretty much the shizzle.

by Anonymousreply 14June 21, 2011 4:17 AM

Dennis was the drummer, right?

by Anonymousreply 15June 21, 2011 4:18 AM

Brian Wilson, when inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame was described as a "songwriting genius." Paul McCartney has called Brian Wilson's song "God Only Knows" one of the finest, most skilled, tonally complex songs ever written. He is a great fan.

by Anonymousreply 16June 21, 2011 4:33 AM

Sargeant Pepper was inspired by Pet Sounds. Even Dame Paul said so.

by Anonymousreply 17June 21, 2011 4:38 AM

You really don't know anything about 20th century music, then. The Beach Boys were fire under the asses of the Beatles for several years. Their creative rivalry pushed both bands (and modern music) to new levels.

As for "Smile", it was actually completed in 2004--at least as complete as it can get more than 3 decades later. The documentary on it, "Beautiful Dreamer", really gives one a good glimpse at Brian's real genius and his shaky mental health. His reactions to "Mrs. O'Leary's Cow" are pretty hard to watch at times.

by Anonymousreply 18June 21, 2011 4:42 AM

Someone once unkindly but accurately said that late-era Brian Wilson sounds like Bill Murray in Caddyshack. I felt mean but couldn't stop laughing.%0D %0D But I'm only posting here because I love some of their songs.

by Anonymousreply 19June 21, 2011 11:42 AM
Gay interest: Dennis Wilson was about as handsome a man as I've ever seen.

God, yes. Even scruffy and bearded, he was a gorgeous man.

Brian is on tour now, I believe, doing Gershwin.

by Anonymousreply 21June 21, 2011 11:58 AM

I would have liked to hear the early, raw tapes of Smile before he spend three decades screwing with them.

by Anonymousreply 22June 21, 2011 12:44 PM

Dennis was the only one in the group who could actually surf.

by Anonymousreply 23June 21, 2011 3:35 PM

R2 here. Your absurd claims for those boys crack me up.

Unlike the Beatles and the Stones, the Beach Boys never assimilated any black or Latin influences. The Beach Boys' music is very cozy, soft, does not rock much, and is extremely white. It lacks sophistication and its cultural references are limited. It's not very sexy.

Pet Sounds has held up as well as most psychedelia has -- that is to say, not especially well. The fact that they did it before the Beatles does not mean much.

Finally the Beach Boys stuck around too long doing dreck like that "Bahama, ooh-ah purty mama" and concerts where they were clearly out of it.

By the way, Dennis barely played drums on their records.

by Anonymousreply 24June 21, 2011 4:53 PM

That's like saying classical music doesn't assimilate any black or Latin influences.

r2 is a complete and utter music moron. (obvious Lady Gaga fanfag)

The Beatles and the Beach Boys were in an intense music rivalry. Obsessing over the other's latest release and trying to top it. They inspired each other.

Rubber Soul inspired Pet Sounds which inspired Sgt. Pepper which inspired Good Vibrations before a complete mental meltdown by Brian Wilson.

Wow, they sang with Annette Funicello! Too bad they didn't team up for "Doggy in the Window" too.

by Anonymousreply 27June 24, 2011 5:11 AM

I don't know how to post links here. However, if you go on youtube and search Annette Funicello Beach Boys, the Monkey's Uncle video comes up. Check it out when Annette bumps into Brian early into the video and he sort of makes a face and is not pleased. Very funny.

by Anonymousreply 28April 22, 2014 11:54 PM

Love 'em!

by Anonymousreply 29April 23, 2014 12:48 AM

Another gay guy who grew up listening to, and loving, the Beach Boys, especially exquisitely handsome drummer Dennis Wilson.

I remember reading an Anna Quindlen column in which she reminisced about the music of the 1960s, in particular the Beatles. Her first sentence was "I was a Paul girl," writing about Paul McCartney. In that moment, I knew "I was a Denny boy."

by Anonymousreply 30April 23, 2014 12:53 AM
I don't know how to post links here

Why? Are you fucking retarded?

You don't understand how to copy a link and paste it into the box that says "Url:"

For real? You can't do that very simple thing?

by Anonymousreply 31April 23, 2014 2:01 AM

'Surf's Up' is a great song.

Post rejected: said buddy Gerry died of aids listening to Holland. that's all.

by Anonymousreply 33April 23, 2014 2:49 AM

Translation, R33?

by Anonymousreply 34April 23, 2014 3:04 AM
Your absurd claims for those boys crack me up.

Then it certainly was worth it to have a nutcase like R2 cracked up.

by Anonymousreply 35April 23, 2014 5:29 PM

Help me Rhonda!

by Anonymousreply 36April 26, 2014 3:28 AM

I recently got into them. Any other fans?

by Anonymousreply 37November 9, 2019 2:24 AM

Deaf people love them.
