- He wasn''t the first, but the massive popularity (and penis) of MC Hammer fueled much of the enthusiasm for dance at that time.

There was a brief time in my life when I didn''t pay much attention to music, and that was the early 1990s. I much prefered the Euro-dance music of the early 2000s, like "Groovejet" by Spiller.
- I can''t believe I forgot "Screamadelica" by Primal Scream, which was released in 1991 and has just been repackaged and re-released as a "20th Anniversary Edition." Bobby Gillespie needs the money.

The KLF, uh-huh uh-huh uh-huh uh-huh
- Cathy Dennis had a bunch of hits from her "Move To This" album in that era, 1990-1991.
- I love "Fascinated." PWL ripped it off for a Bananarama single:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lPbXWyKIP_w
- I always thought that Cathy Dennis was highly underrated in the US.
- I LOVED Lisa Stansfield! Too bad she didn''t have a longer career.
- God, I wish I could have been old enough to go clubbing back in this era. People actually DANCED and had a good fucking time. No cheesy bottle service places...people from all walks of life gathering together and just dancing their asses off and getting wild. Ugh, I hate being a new millennium kid. \

Although their popularity was broader in Europe, 2 Brothers on the 4th Floor had a moderate U.S. dance floor hit in 1990 with "Can''t Help Myself." I used to love when that song would come on at my favorite gay bar.%0D\
%0D\
Their sound is what I think of as most indicative of the early ''90s dance music. Several of their singles are good even though they all sound roughly the same. %0D\

"Everybody, Everybody" - "Strike It Up" - "Ride On Time" - and my favorite, "I Don''t Know Anybody Else" - they were fantastic. Seems like everyone remembers C&C Music Factory, but not Black Box. They may have been as fake as Milli Vanilli, but their singles were great.

I think hardcore dance music people consider most of the Stock Aitken Waterman catalog pop music, but it certainly was good to dance to.%0D\
%0D\
The U.S. was deprived of the bulk of the hottest singles they produced. I worked at Sam Goody in 1990 and I remember my frustration at telling a customer that I knew the song he was looking for, but unfortunately it was an import only and he''d have to special order from a shop that handled non-domestic releases. Thank God for Amazon now so that that''s not an issue any longer.%0D\

The song that customer wanted is a real favorite of mine and I think it is one of the best of the PWL legacy as well as an appropriate reply to this DL posting. %0D\

Anyway, "Gonna Catch You" was such a great song. Something is wrong with the sync on the video I''ve attached, but it''s the best version of the song I can find.

- A good example of a dance floor staple from Stock Aitken Waterman is Pat and Mick''s 1990 remake of "Use It Up, Wear It Out."%0D\
%0D\
This type of music really died off when grunge took over the decade.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_0tDlp78pGg
- Long story short: acid house, rave & Madchester in the UK. House, freestyle and hip-house in the US. Other countries were doing house and rave, most notably the Netherlands, Germany and Italy. Proto-eurodance was appearing in those countries, but it was not yet stylistically complete (Snap, 2 Unlimited, the KLF, Cappella and Captain Hollywood were all releasing records that''d later be considered the bones of the genre).
- Rick Astley was another Stock-Aitken-Waterman production, and he had several great dance songs in the late 80's. Although by 1990-1991, he was going in a more "Adult" direction with songs like "Cry For Help". %0D
%0D
I think Donna Summer's 1989 hit, "This Time I Know It's For Real" was also produced by them, as well. I still have the cassette single of it. The 12" version is really good, too. %0D

My brother''s a few years older than me and went to a couple of raves. But even he was too young for that scene.\

Back II Reality
- Every now and then I think back to this thread when I play something out of my library.
The previously mentioned KLF had an album with several big dance singles in 1990/1991. I loved the whole thing, but my favorite song to turn up loud is "Last Train to Trancentral."
http://www.youtube.com/watch%3Fv%3D6ifNTb1Xx_I
- In general I wasn't a big fan of the Miami Freestyle-type music that got popular in the later 80s, but I love this song and I'm pretty sure it falls under that classification.
One of the last to chart (1991) before the Miami fad went back underground, Corina with "Temptation."
http://www.youtube.com/watch%3Fv%3DtE-E76qLjnY
- PWL did indeed produce "This Time I Know It's For Real" for Donna Summer, plus an entire album which just sparkles--she should have done another album with them.
- Not to hijack the thread, but does anyone have any gossip on Cathy Dennis? I always loved her music (for the one or two years she was actually played here) and recently heard she was a lesbo.
- R111, it was actually Stock Waterman Aiken who produced This Time I Know It's for Real for Donna Summer, and the entire album Another Place in Time.
R112, Cathy's mostly a songwriter now, and she co-wrote Katy Perry's I Kissed a Girl. I had no idea she was a lesbo nowadays. She also co-wrote this gem from Janet's "Damita Jo" album...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AhueIHLieGA
- What? A lesbo? Really? I'd never heard that, but I haven't heard anything about Dennis since 1992.
I shouldn't say that because I know she's a songwriter and has written for some recent pop act that I can't think of right now.
- I think there is a misunderstanding about SAW vs. PWL, at least here on DL. Anything that SAW wrote/produced is a PWL product. So R111 is correct, as is R113.
They aren't exactly interchangeable, but anything that the 3 guys collaborated on was a product of Pete Waterman's company, so saying that a record was SAW means it was a PWL record.
- Cathy wrote "Toxic" as well.
- I was just as shocked when I heard that about her, too. But I've never heard even a whisper she might be gay.
- SAW were awesome--what about Princess "Say I'm Your Number One" ?
- Always loved this Kylie SAW track:

- Siouxsie and the Banshees released Kiss Them For Me around the time. Also Björk released Debut with dance songs like Big Time Sensuality and Violently Happy and some of the Human Behaviour remixes still hold up well.
- Utah Saints, "What Can You Do For Me"
They had other songs that I like much more than this one, but it looks like their first full album was released in '92, so this single is the only thing that qualifies for the purposes of this thread.

Jody Watley (she is an original artist, but you can best believe her debut solo album was made possible due to the massive success of "Control". Record companies saw the niche market that Janet was making for the dance/pop divas of color, and quickly signed Jody on the dotted line).
And yes, Janet owned 1986-1991. The end.
- 90-91 is too narrow a window. This thread should be about house music starting in the late 80s with Jody Watley and others, and then continuing into the early 90s until grudge halted its popularity. House music was the 2nd comeback of disco, the first was synth-pop '80-'84 which was essentially synthesized disco. Disco can't make a comeback because it never died, they just changed the name to dance music and house.
Donna Summer's 1989 SAW album was brought up and people wondered why she didn't record a 2nd one with them. There was one planned, but they couldn't come to terms on it. They had already written a song for her likely to be the lead single (Happenin' All Over Again.) It was eventually given to Lonnie Gordon, who made #3 on the UK pop chart with it in 1990. Donna would've gotten it into the US Top 10 as well. Here is the 1993 remix that topped the US dance chart:

- Nirvana's influence on 1990's top 40 radio is so overexagerated. Mariah Cary, Whitney Houston, Boyz 2 Men, etc. How were any of these performers transformed by Nirvana?
- Oh. Ahem. Nirvana.
Try Sonic Youth for the real deal at that time.
Try Underground Resistance for decent music to dance to in the early 90's.
