She was escorted to some parade or event by f all people porn star Matthew Rush and 3 other porn stars; as I recall her comments about the event were rather delightful.
Why can''t Connie Francis be a gay icon? \
She has been active in AIDS charities, was a grand balladeer, and has a tragic past. I know I sound stereotypical, but she meet the criterion, eh?
Her autobiography "Who''s Sorry Now" is a camp classic.
And there is no exception to the rule: yes, everybody''s somebody''s fool.
She might be delightful and have endured a certain amount of tragedy ... but that doesn''t make my Mom or Connie Francis a gay icon.
YES! YES! She is a fabulous woman! As she said one time! "If it wasn''t for all my record sales in the 60''s MGM would have gone down the tubes" (not her excact words) and yes MGM did have a record label for many years. DIVA!
Loved her in Where The Boys Are. The Elbo Room lunch counter scene where she''s broke and orders a cup of hot water to use with her own teabag is hilarious.
I''ve never really heard about her being a gay icon. I don''t remember ever hearing her mentioned along with the main icons like Garland, Streisand, Cher, etc. \
She''s still amazing, though. I have her box set. The girl could really sing.
Here is a retrospective of "Where the Boys Are" with Connie Francis and Paula Prentiss. \
Connie Francis was very much ahead of her time with a thing or two according to this retrospective. \
WEHT Paula Prentiss? Anyone know? There really is not anyone else like her.
r15 Thanks for the brilliant contribution. Now, fuck off.
Paula Prentiss is interviewed on the extras section of Where The Boys Are DVD. She looks her age and wore little make-up. She looked like a West Virginia housewife. It was sort of sad to see her.
I hope Connie is gay accepting. It seemed like an inevitability that she would have to deal with a gay son. Her father would only approve of her dating homosexuals, Neil Sedaka got the green light while he put the brakes on her affair with Bobby Darin. She struggles with mental illness and says she has to go off her meds in order to perform. At any rate, anybody who recorded ''Where The Boys Are'' and ''I''ll Follow the Boys'' should be prepared for an avid gay fan base. Let''s face it, she could''ve gone all Anita Bryant on us, so I welcome her as an icon if she wants to claim the title.
For those who might be interested, Warner Archive has released ALL of Connie's movies (remastered) on DVD. That includes "Where the Boys Are", "Follow the Boys", "Looking for Love" and even "When the Boys Meet the Girls."
The DVD quality is excellent and they're in letterbox format.
And yes, I know that except for WTBA, the others are pretty awful. Still, for those of us who really liked her back in the 60's, it's nice to see these movies again - I didn't think they'd ever be out on DVD.
WEHT Connie's biopic starring Gloria Estefan?
i am gay and i adore connie and always have and always will she is indeed an icon to me and does she miss Marvin Rainwater who recorded a duet with her on MGM just before she became a major STAR
A CONNIE FAN FOREVER
I LURVE her.
Best voice in the business, can sing opera, show tunes, country, jazz-you name it. FABULOUS woman, I've met her, and she's a real doll.
Icon. Legend. Down-to earth sweetheart.
Love you Connie!
Let's just claim Connie as a gay icon and be done with it.
Her wonderful past recordings, corny film roles, and tragic back story- all lend themselves to gay icon status.
She sought international fame and got it before Babs or any other balladeer and she recorded in multiple languages to boot.
When it comes to sufferin' she's right up there with Elizabeth Taylor.
Anyone who leaves her motel room door ajar is aces with me!
Connie has Andrea Martin's "Connie Franklin" parody up on her Vimeo channel, so if nothing else she can laugh at herself.
I have always been amazed that she can sing so very well with her lockjaw mouth position! She barely opens her mouth and that great voice comes out - I wonder how she would have sounded if she had opened her mouth more, the way one is taught by coaches to let the sound out.
Why did she get a nosejob? It was unneeded and it damaged her looks.
I remember when I was a kid, my parents would play her greatest hits LP (that they ordered off the teevee) and I thought it was soooo lame.
Then when I got older and wiser, I rear her CAMPTASTIC autobiography and started listening to her old hits.
I like her a lot. Gay icon, for me.
Her live performances are packed with gay men. When she sings Where The Boys Are guys dance together in the aisles. Its a campfest.
Connie's manager is gay. I met her thru him in 2000. I got the impression that she's emotionally delicate, but very sweet. She loves her fans and signs memorabilia for hours after the show.
A bit bizarre she doesn't have a star on Hollywood Blvd. Never understood that or the snub by the RRHF.
the celebrity's handlers arrange for the star on the Walk of Fame. They pay for it, too.
The snubbing of her by the RRHF is abominable. Iggy and the Stooges are in, for god's sake.
Connie Francis was one of the first white women to sing in a rock mode...so she holds an important place in pop music history... but the truth is, she was a lousy singer.
She sounded like someone letting the air out of a balloon. Most of her songs were novelty numbers. She's very 1959-1961. None of her stuff has aged very well. I'd group Francis with Fabian and Bobby Rydell...by 1963, they were finished. The only female pop singer of that early 60's era whose work is still somewhat listenable is Brenda Lee.
Connie is no in the New Jersey Hall of Fame. She grew up in Newark, Belleville and Bloomfield, yet they inducted Tony Bennett. All he did was be born at Englewood Hospital. Soon after his family moved to Astoria, Queens and he's lived in Manhattan since his twenties.
I have both the LP and the CD of our little Connie singing her greatest hits in Japanese. It's plainly phonetic - her voice breaks on the same notes as in English - but it's sublime. Maybe sublimer than the original versions.
"Oh my God. I'm back. I'm home. All the time, it was... We finally really did it ... You Maniacs! You blew it up! Ah, damn you! God damn you all to hell!"
We are switching to the new platform for The DataLounge this weekend. All of our mobile users have been using it for over a week and all first time users have been using it for about a month - which adds up to well over one million users. So we're ready to end this phase of the testing and move everybody to the new site. (more)
And yes, we've changed the look and some of how it operates.
Yes, we know you just *hate* it in well in advance.
Yes, we know we suck.
Yes, we are the biggest suckers that ever sucked.
But it was time for a change and with the huge shift to mobile it was long overdue. We've taken this opportunity not only to update the look but also make major changes under the hood (or "bonnet" if you're either British or pretentious or both). And we have to prepare for 2016 - a presidential election year where we can normally expect to see a 60% jump in traffic (yes, we've seen 5 presidential elections so far…Christ we're old).
The site has a bunch - nay, plethora - of new features which will make the site more usable: better search, the ability to ignore posters and threads, see link previews, to pick up a thread where you left off, spam and malware filtering and more.
If you want you can go explore and see for yourself, Click here.
And while running the tests we've noticed two interesting reactions to the new system - people are spending more time on the site and more people that come stay around longer and look at more stuff. Both good things. Yay!
Possibly we've not slain all the dragons and there will be issues that come up during the switchover. There's a help button in the lower right hand corner of the page which you can use to send us bug reports.
Please include as much information about the hardware (PC, Mac, Tablet, Phone etc), operating system (Windows, Mac OS, Android, iOS etc) and browser (Chrome, Safari, Opera, Internet Explorer etc) that you are using as possible to help us replicate and fix the problem.
Please note that complaints about colors, fonts, icons and the like are not "bugs" - they are design choices that we've made and we expect one or two cases of world-class bitching. But they won't actually cause headaches, scurvy, heart attacks, Restless Leg Syndrome, Morgellon's Disease or the vapors (but have your smelling salts at hand just in case).
Talking to DataLounge servers. Please wait a moment...
