Famous or respectable non-German Nazi sympathizers
Joe Kennedy, Christian Dior''s niece, who else?
The Bush''s funded the German military buildup, most of the tycoons of the ''30s, Lindbergh.
The House of Windsor.
No, R2, the OP asked for "respectable" non-German Nazi sympathizers.
Besides, the Windsors are German.\
R5, in fairness, I was making a joke at the expense of those tabloid-y Windsors.\
But in what way were they "German" in 1930? \
That would be like saying that the children of immigrants retained the nationality of their parents. Except, in this case, I don''t think there had been a native German since Prince Albert, who died in 1863. George V was Victoria and Albert''s grandson
US Military Intelligence, which renamed itself the Central Intelligence Agency. Big Nazi employer too.
Charles Lindbergh was one of the biggest.
Whoever was the head of F.A.O. Schwarz during the 1930s. Apparently, Carey Grant was invited into his private office and there was a picture of Adolf Hitler.
the toy tycoon? hadn''t heard that one
Most of America and Britain, including their Establishments, prior to 1939. \
People have forgotten, for example, the immense popularity of Douglas Reed''s books on Germany such as Insanity Fair, and its sequels.
R6, The Duke and Duchess of Windsor went to Hitler, and asked him to not bomb their French mansion and there priceless objects, he agreed. After the war, the Duke and Duchess lost many friends because of this.
Eva and Juan Peron. \
Supposedly Marlene Dietrich.
Marlene hated the Nazis.
Marlene Dietrich was a MAJOR anti-fascist. Everybody knows that.\
Salvador Dali was a Franco sympathizer, if that counts.\
Theodore Dreiser was a Nazi sympathizer, at least initially.
Was Errol Flynn a Nazi Sympathizer? There was a rumor many years ago that he was very pro Nazi, and in fact he found out his butler was Jewish, and he beat the guy to a pulp.
R17 is also so ignorant that he/she doesn''t realise Marlene was German.
Adolf Hitler, Austrian.
Louis Ferdinand Celine.
The CIA is its own separate evil entity, r9. And the 2 organizations that proceeded it were the OSS, and then briefly the CIG, as they were arguing over the creation of such an organization. People feared it would become Gestapo-like.
Don''t be silly R27.%0D\
The US film star (born in Norway) with huge Nazi sympathies was Sonja Henie. Somewhere there is a picture of her with Hitler, but I think it came from the 1936 Olympics.
Prince Albert -- husband of Queen Victoria and grandfather of the current monarch, Queen Elizabeth, was a German prince of the House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. \
His descendants therefore are German royalty. That means that his sons who ruled in the 30s were both members of the British royal family and German princes.
[quote]husband of Queen Victoria and grandfather of the current monarch, Queen Elizabeth\
make that, GREAT-Grandfather. or Great-great-granfather, wasn''t Edward her great-grandfather?
WWII obsessive, STOP IT!!!
John Foster Dulles, Allen Dulles, the Harrimans, the Morgans, the Koch family, and many others.
The Koch family got its start working with the Nazis (and Stalin), although they are of German descent, they might not count as an answer.
Essentially all the fortunes descending from the robber baron era did business with the Nazis. That's where a huge expanding economy was as Germany rearmed. The people that manage those fortunes don't have compunctions about morality, they want profits and they will put there money where they can get a return.
A good starting point to see how the robber barons, the financing of the Nazis and the cast of current political figures intertwine is to google these names: Harriman (railroad robber baron); Allen Dulles and John Foster Dulles, brothers and early supporters of Hitler and later major U.S. political leaders; Sullivan and Cromwell, an international law firm and the Dulles law firm; Brown Brothers Harriman & Co. -- the Bush law firm.
Name after name of Nazi sympathizers who used their business fortunes, banks, and industries to finance Nazi Germany pop up with interconnections going back before the Nazi's and continuing to the present. After World War II, the international legal community, particularly the U.S. stepped in to make sure these business deals with the Nazis, including busting the unions, were never revealed.
Prescott Bush had a very close call, though, as he almost was indicted for war crimes. (W's grandfather). Things got so tense for the ruling class that J.P. Morgan and his buddies kicked around an idea of a right-wing coup in which the leading families would throw out F.D.R. They probably figured they had enough control anyway, with getting the adverse publicity, not that there would have been much press left to complain.
If you want to move deeper into conspiracy theory, you can also google "Skull and Bones" and "Yale".
I don't get into conspiracy theory as an avocation because to me it is obvious from the start. Enormous fortunes perpetuate themselves however necessary. What is more interesting is to see how the fortunes are amassed and protected, because the same methods get used over and over.
The robber barons made their fortunes, as a general thing, by rigging the government in their favor and then stealing the public blind. One typical tactic was what the railroads did -- buy legislatures. The purchase of the Wisconsin legislature is nothing new, the Pennsylvania Railroad owned the Pennsylvania state government in the 19th century.
It makes me nauseated when the defenders of the super rich say that they deserve their fortunes because they were self-made. Right. They were self-made in that they stole so much no one could put them in prison. Somebody like Mark Cuban made his own, but not the super money that rules the international economy.
What the robber barons did in the 19th century was to buy their own state legislature and governor, arrange to have public resources sold off to themselves at bargain rates in the name of privatization. The railroads got enormous land grants which they sold at inflated prices to settlers, built bullshit railroads at with cheap equipment, slave labor, kept the land sale profits and ran.
Today, Wisconsin has legislated the same provisions -- ways to sell off state assets so rich capitalists can step in buy them for a song, manipulate the value upwards. If we are talking an essential service, like water, they will gouge as long as they can doing no maintenance and paying scab wages, then abandon it back to the government in terrible shape claiming bankruptcy. Let the government rebuild it at public expense, and then in the next cycle, do it again.
It is the same railroad gimmick. That's how they get control of the resources.
How do they control labor costs, then and now?
In the 30s,John Foster Dulles was an ardent Nazi supporter. He met with the Nazis and worked out a deal to provide support in return for the Nazi's smashing German unions which were interfering with the profits of Sullivan and Cromwell's.
That would make sense. I believe while the Allies blasted German cities to rubble, there was a deliberate effort to avoid blowing up the factories themselves......and the rail lines.
[quote]The Duke and Duchess of Windsor went to Hitler, and asked him to not bomb their French mansion and there priceless objects, he agreed. After the war, the Duke and Duchess lost many friends because of this%0D\
Provide cites to a reliable source for this claim, please.%0D\
R34 took too much Adderall this morning.
Maybe, I dunno. The current monarch -- her father was the guy in the King Speaks, her uncle was the Duke of Windsor, right? The family was German in the sense that the paternal line led back to a German prince, the husband of Queen Victoria. I really don't find that worthless bunch of oddballs interesting enough to look it up.
R35: Right, apparently rail lines that could have been bombed weren't, and of particular concern would be the lines that led to the camps. The Jews say it shows that FDR was anti-semitic, other people syY no, that he wanted to save industry of his backers. That takes you down into a real maze, which is why I don't spend time there.
The point is that an interlocking immensely rich sub-culture, the term of art is "ruling class," has had, perhaps complete control is too strong, but ultimate sway over this society since about 1850.
Riches and power of that sort self-perpetuate. The lieutenants that run the wealth don't care about results to society, they care about profits. If they make money working with Nazi's well, that's their job to make money, and if they don't the rich will find other bank presidents.
The sudden growth of social complexity that let this tiny group get incredibly wealthy also produced a society that is incredibly expensive in human needs. The simple example is that if you want to make a fortune from factories, what do you do with the aged who can no longer make money for you?
On the farm, the workers would die younger and near the end, when they no longer could work, they could live with their families off the crops the younger people raised.
But that won't work in modern society, so there has to be some other solution and it will alway be expensive. For one thing, the food has to be brought from the farm to the elderly, to be very simplistic about it.
Then there is everything else, electricity, water, sewage, transportation, that the new economy has to have.
The very rich say, "Not out of our pockets, thank you very much. You want sewers, it comes out of tax dollars, as long as you don't tax us. We need that money for more investments to make more money."
Or they say, sell us your electrical plants for a dime on the dollar and we will run them for you as long as we don't have to pay the workers anything.
So you can't vote these bastards out of office, that's never been done. They sure don't have the concern of the people of the world in mind -- witness Hitler. What you can do is what Cairo did and what is starting in Wisconsin.
Or deal with another capitalist-sponsored ogre of the Hitler ilk sooner or later.
Franco a sympathizer? Collaborator more like.
Phillip Johnson, arguably the most influential architect of the late half of the 20th Century (see: AT&T Building, most of the skyline of Atlanta and Houston) was an ardent Nazi in his youth. He repented, and many later benefactors and supporters were Jewish, but his architecture, and much of postmodernism, often alludes to a fascistic aesthetic.
George Patton and the entire city of San Marino, Ca thought we were attacking the wrong enemy in WW2.
R28, There is a picture of Sonja Henie meeting Hitler with a large smile on her face in her biography. Apparently she couldn''t care less one way or another about what Hitler stood for or didn''t stood for. She didn''t care about the war one way or another either. She was totally career driven ,and her career was her life and focus. Hitler wanted her to ice skate for him, and so she went and skated for him with no hesitation. She just didn''t care. She was totally self centered. \
R36, that information came from the biography by Charles Higham with shows both the Duke and Duchess smiling and meeting with Hitler. Also, Higham indicated they made that request from Hitler. Also, documents that have been declassified fairly recently by the British government indicate this fact. These declassified files were shown on TV. I think it was on the History Channel.
On the contrary R41, there is nothing the least bit fascistic about post-modernism, other than its hate for modernism. Speer was no post-modernist.%0D
And Philip Johnson lived in a modern house.
R44 you''ve got to be fucking kidding me.
[quote]The US film star (born in Norway) with huge Nazi sympathies was Sonja Henie. Somewhere there is a picture of her with Hitler, but I think it came from the 1936 Olympics.\
Sonja didn''t have any strong sympathies toward any political movement. She was all about Sonja.
The Duke and Duchess of Windsor spent their honeymoon in Germany as Hitler's guests and were photographed smiling with him.
The photos are reproduced in virtually every biography of either of them or of the Royal Family (Queen Elizabeth, King George V or VI, etc.) or history of England during the war years.
Henry Ford was much admired by Hitler. This certainly wasn't his fault. However, he went to Nazi Germany twice after the State Department personally asked him not to go to accept medals from Hitler personally. No wonder the family of this father of the anti-Semitic press in the US had him committed after WWII.
Oil bearing factories, airplane manufacturing plants, and gasoline depots - all were targeted. As well as they could. They weren't anywhere near as precise as todays bombing.
Every time you use your Krups coffeemaker, remember that they're the ones who provided the gas ovens to the concentration camps.
"Hmmmm...Fuhrer wants ovens large enough to stand up in. Must be baking a lot of bread!"
Charles Higham biographies are a source for NOTHING.
Thomas Watson, IBM
Father Charles Coughlin
Thomas Alva Edison
George Herbert Walker
Walter Brennan, Ginger Rogers
Abraham Vereide, antilabor agitator, and founder of the U.S. National Prayer Breakfast
Karl Heinz Roverer...aka Carl Rove, grandfather of Karl Rove. Lest we crow too hard, Louis Rove, Karl's dad, was a gay man.
Careful R56, you might have to expose the deal the Jews made with Hitler, putting the interests of Israel ahead of those 6 million European Jews who were killed.
If you have evidence of such a deal, r57, put up or shut up.
Most of Canada admired Hitler in the 1930's, my hometown in Nova Sacotia flew Swatikas and had a huge welcome parade for a U Boat that came in for emergency repairs in 1936.
The ENTIRE Canadian Olympic Team at the Berlin Games proudly gave Hitler the Nazi Salute during the Opening Ceremonies
R50, I simply adore my Krups Convection Oven, it seats 8.
R2, R3, and R5, don't be such glib idiots, at least when it comes to the Windsors and Hitler and WWII.
"The House of Windsor" hardly contained a contingent of Nazi sympathizers. Philip's sisters who married German military people weren't even invited to his wedding years later.
The family is not "German." Albert's being German and Victoria's daughter Vicky briefly being the wife of the Kaiser and - alas for her - being the mother of Wilhelm didn't leave a German imprint on the family - perhaps you forgot that Germany fought the U.K. in WWI. The family was intermarried with Denmark, Spain, Rumania, Russia - every house was mingled, as the Family plan over generations was carried out.
Mary of Teck famously loathed Germany and Germans, and instilled a bias in her children that was easy to support once Hitler took over. David's (Edward's) games with the Nazis were an indication both of his and Wallis' stupidity and capacity for being played. But they were isolated and perverse - hardly representative of what the WIndsors were about as Buckingham Palace was being bombed.
But, of course, it's R57 who needs to be F&Fd and booted - your foolishness is nothing compared to such viciousness.
R50, stop spreading vicious rumors. Krups did not make crematoria for the concentration camps.
For heaven's sake, R53, Ginger Rogers may have been a whacked-out Christian Scientist and lifelong Republican, but she was neither a Nazi sympathizer nor anti-Semitic. She saved her passion for her anti-Communist crusades.
I blame her crazy, controlling mother, anyway.
Hugo Boss....designed the SS and Gestapo uniforms too
In the months running up to Pearl Harbor, our local paper ran several stories of local boys who went to join the Canadians and British Armies, as well as those who went to join the Germany Army...
Links are forthcoming. Admittedly they were in a no-win position. Still, it should have been handled differently.
Essentially they broke the boycott of Germany in return for a mere 60,000 emigrants. You can say, well, that's 60,000 who wouldn't have been alive otherwise, but maybe if the boycott had been more effective it wouldn't have gone so far. Probably not, perhaps Hitler could never have been stopped short of war. It was a difficult and wrenching moral choice. Nonetheless, to claim I should be "banned" because history isn't what you think it is, is outrageous.
Adolf invited Hattie McDaniel and Louise Beavers to Wolf's Lair for an orgy.
r68 should be banned. He's posting links from the most prominent Holocaust denial site in the world.
by the way, the Koch brothers are of Dutch ancestry, not German.
Datalounge is really going downhill fast.
Un-fucking-believable. Someone linked to a Holocaust denial site? We've had our fill of Jew-bashing posts here, but it's been years since I saw anyone try this crap.
Get the fuck off Datalounge now.
Joseph P. Kennedy. So outspoken in favor of Hitler, Roosevelt had to recall him from the Ambassadorship in Britain.
R34, JP Morgan died before WW I in 1913. What are you talking about?
Barack Hussein Obama
Why the hell was this bumped up? It's full of misinformation and mindless gossip.
Maurice Chevalier was not a Nazi sympathizer. He and Edith Piaf visited German POW camps to entertain French POWs. Chevalier was asked to perform on germany and he refused, instead performing at the same German POW camp he was imprisoned in during WWI and was able to get some French prisoners out in exchange. He was tried for collaborating after the war but he was acquitted and exonerated. There were just as many accusations against Piaf but a lot of work was done for the resistance and the underground by people who were able to use their positions to access the Nazis and thereby help the French resistance.
Coco Chanel was a Nazi collaborator. She actually worked for the Abwehr (German Military Intelligence) and turned in Jews who were hiding in Paris. She was also having an affair with a high ranking Nazi. She was loathesome. She had to use every powerful contact she had to escape being tried as a traitor and collaborator. She fled to Switzerland for a while after the war until she managed to fix things for herself so she could return to France.
Lindbergh went to Germany at the request of the US govt. Because of his stature and popularity as a pioneer aviator he was given access to see their military and air power. He became convinced that they were so advanced in their preparation that we could not win a war against them. Obviously he was proven wrong but his belief made him an outspoken advocate of staying out of another European war - an attitude that was held by the majority of Americans pretty much up to Pearl Harbor.
Joseph Kennedy was despicable and such a defeatist that he was detested by the British. His replacement as Ambassador was Gil Winant (John Gilbert Winant) who became beloved by the British people and Churchill himself as he walked the street of London during the bombing offering assistance. Winant had been a remarkable progressive politician who had been a real threat to FDR as a potential presidential opponent. FDR in his clever way coopted Winant by giving him positions that removed him from the immediate political scene. In the end it is Winant who stands tall as one of the few Americans who, as the Brits put it, "stood with Britain in its finest, darkest hour." Meaning during the blitz and when England stood alone against Hitler.
Winant was a fascinating figure who has long been forgotten by most but who was very admired and beloved at the time. There are some good books about the Americans who were in London at the time and who helped get America into the war (Winant, Averell Harriman, Edward R. Murrow).
[quote]Lindbergh went to Germany
And had a a German medal draped around his neck. His wife would refer to it as "The Albatross."
try to cry out in the heat of the moment possessed by a fury that burns from inside
Yes, R79, that was a serious "faux pas" to say the least. He hadn't known they were giving him a medal and he diplomatically accepted it. Obviously in hindsight it looked terrible and Anne Morrow told him so. It doesn't change what he went to Germany for - essentially to spy on them for the US govt - nor does it make him a Nazi sympathizer. He did enough for the war effort - both with personal risk to his own life and in invaluable technical assistance for the USAAF that saved the lives of many airmen - that his loyalties shouldn't be questioned.
R81 -- Lindbergh did have trouble coming to terms with Nazi atrocities, though. Shown some death camps, he stood there sputtering and finally blurted, "well, well, look what we did to the Japs!"
Not -- look what the Japanese did to the Filipinos or Chinese or Burmese or Malaysians, but...
But Gore Vidal warned us about the oddness of aviators, starting with his own father.
I don't disagree with you, R82.
Arletty. Mireille Balin. Nora Gregor. Danielle Darrieux.
All adored Third Reich schwanz!
Austen Chamberlain was a violent anti-semite whose views were cited as proof by the burgeoning antisemite movement in Munich before Hitler's time. He was half-brother of Neville Chamberlain, the latter of course being the PM who appeased Hitler.
[R:14]. Not true.
I can't speak for the US, although I suspect it was the same as in the UK - where fascism and nazism were widely despised long before the war.
A very small contingent of indigenous fascists, known as the 'Black Shirts' operated in the East End of London, an area that was traditionally poor with a large demographic of recent immigrants. The local British working class fought off the Black Shirts when they targeted this immigrant population, at that point, heavily Jewish...as they wanted no part of such racism. Literally fought off - there were pitched street battles in the defence of Jewish businesses etc.
So to, when US servicemen were stationed in the UK through the war, locals were shocked at the prevalent discrimination of black servicemen by their own white comrades. There are many well documented examples of British pub / shop owners etc insisting - by force where necessary - that black soldiers were treated equally.
There were exceptions in the landed Establishment, of course (they were the ones who'd driven and were still clinging onto the Empire after all) and there are a-holes everywhere... But for the overwhelming majority of the ordinary UK - nazism ran counter to basic British sensibilities of fair play and moderate politics. I'm sure that was the same for most Americans too.
Emil Nolde -- until they banned his work.
And I gather that there was some issue with Picasso -- would anyone here have any details?
Pity about Nolde. Among my favorite painters.
Actually, the posting stipulates that they have to be non-German, so I guess Nolde shouldn't have been listed.
