- I''ve always loved her work. "Three Women" (which I haven''t seen since it was first released) and naturally "Coal Miner''s Daughter" are both excellent movies if only because of her.\
\
Years ago, Pauline Kael said Spacek couldn''t get work in Hollywood because she had pissed someone off. Any idea what that was all about?
- I wouldn''t know.
M
- She''s brilliant in Coal Miner''s Daughter and Carrie but HATED In The Bedroom, the only good scene was when she slaps Marisa Tomei (it looked so real), but the rest of the movie was extremely boring.
- Has one of the worst nose jobs in Hollywood.
- Spacek didn''t conform to the typical Hollywood leading lady looks, so her star status was never on solid ground. Never heard that she had pissed off anyone in particular, but you never know.\
\
Regardless, she''s a wonderful actress. I went to see the indie film GET LOW last summer in large part due to her being in it, despite my general resistance to watching the right-winger Robert Duvall.
- Marisa Tomei said the slap was real.
- Thanks, r6...didn''t know that.
- They''re called breasts, momma.
Dirty Pillows
- How can you not like "In the Bedroom"? It''s beautifully acted. You must have hated Affliction.
- R1, 3 WOMEN doesn''t really age well. I saw it on Fox Movie Channel, and other than the brilliant performances from her and Shelley Duvall (who excels partly because she is so perfectly cast) the film is the expression of an idea that wasn''t fully baked. \
\
I got the feeling that Altman wasn''t really sure what he wanted to say and thought it would come to him in the process of making the film. It didn''t.\
\
McCABE & MRS. MILLER had the same problem. The first hour of that film is really dull, other than Julie Christie. Beatty is actually very irritating in the film.
- Good actress, definitely, if a bit hard to cast. A performance she didn''t get sufficient credit for--Night Mother. Yes, it''s pretty much just the play, filmed, and Anne Bancroft can be a bit much in it (though at other times she''s just right). But Ms. Sissy is absolutely riveting in it--some of her very best work.
- [quote]Spacek didn''t conform to the typical Hollywood leading lady looks, so her star status was never on solid ground. Never heard that she had pissed off anyone in particular, but you never know.\
\
Actually at her peak in the late 70''s and early/mid 80''s, most of the top actresses weren''t stunning beauties or all that glamorous. I don''t think she cared too much about Hollywood and focused on her family. Both of her kids were born when she was at the peak of her career and her and her husband live full time in Virginia.
- David Cronenberg wanted her for the lead in "Rabid" but was overruled by the powers that be. Instead the talentless porn star Marilyn Chambers got the role. I would have loved to have seen Spacek in that movie; she would have done so much more with the character.%0D\
%0D\
Spacek was also to have played "Sissy" in "Urban Cowboy", but somehow that fell through. I would have also loved to have seen her in that movie. It would have been much more interesting.
- who?
anyone under 40
- I think she is brilliant. Below is from Badlands. Such a genius movie.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iBZkP3H7Td4
- She''s a good actress, but she chooses the most boring roles.
- All my favorite actresses were the slightly under the radar types like Spacek, Margot Kidder. They''re sort of trapped between Leading Lady and Character Actress.
- %0D\
Is she coming back to Big Love? I loved her character on there. She stole every scene she was in.
- She is great in Three Women, Carrie and in Badlands.
- She was also pretty good in a 1970s TV movie called Katherine.
- Great actress, consumate artist, managed to avoid making a bunch of shit movies and helped create a number of major and minor classics.%0D\

- Sissy Spacek writing memoir, ''Barefoot Stories''\
\
NEW YORK (AP) - Take off your shoes and relax: Oscar winner Sissy Spacek has a few stories to tell.\
\
Hyperion announced Friday that it''s publishing her memoir, which is tentatively called "Barefoot Stories." The book is scheduled to come out next year.\
\
The 61-year-old actress won an Academy Award in 1981 for "Coal Miner''s Daughter," in which she played country singer Loretta Lynn. She also starred in the horror classic "Carrie." She was seen last year in "Get Low," with Robert Duvall and Bill Murray.

- I love her in everything she''s in, even though usually she''s better than the movie. I loved her in "Crimes of the Heart".
- Coal Miner''s Daughter, my ass. Sissy stole my Best Actress Oscar for Ordinary People.
Mary Tyler Moore
- I''ve always gone out of my way to see Spacek''s movies. She''s one of very few actors whom I enjoy that much.
- She was terrifyingly real in "''night, Mother." (Anne Bancroft, too!)
- I''m glad that she wasn''t in Urban Cowboy. Urban Cowboy is one of the worst movies ever made.
- Sorry, MTM/R24. Sissy won every major award that year for her performance. People thought you were just playing yourself.
- What happened to that taken free daughter she tried to foist on us a few years back? She was prettier than Mamie Gumer, though.
- Katherine is a great TV movie and she is fantastic in it. It''s kind of disappeared, which is too bad, but the subject matter would be very dicey in this day and age.\
\
And you know who else gives a great performance in it? Henry Winkler, of all people, very much not the Fonz.
- MTM/R24 perhaps you should''ve lobbied for Supporting Actress. That was the rightful category for you, since you had less screen time than me and I was clearly leading.
Timothy "worked for me"Hutton
- OMG, I wish they had the entire movie. Is that Art Carney??%0D\
%0D\
Was that loud music in the movie or did whoever posted the clip add it? I could hardly hear what the actors were saying.%0D\
%0D\
If only young people had still were willing to fight for others and for what''s right. Now most won''t even fight for themselves. %0D

- 3 Women is a great movie and I wouldn''t say it is boring by any means. Apparently, Altman had a vivid dream, wrote it down the next morning and turned it into a script without trying to make sense of everything. The performances in it, particularly by Spacek and Duvall, are amazing. Badlands is an overlooked masterpiece.
- I love 3 Women. Where was it shot?
- It was shot in Desert Hot Springs and Palm Springs, CA. %0D\
%0D
- Missing coming up next on TCM.
- Altman said he dreamed all of 3 Women - the story, the cast, the locations. Love that movie.
- Is it me or did Spacek give herself a Michael Jackson nose? I think she''s lovely but that nose is off.
- Both she and her husband Jack are great people, incredibly down-to-earth. Jack was the production designer for "There Will Be Blood."
- Isn''t she divorced from Jack Fisk? Little known fact: she and her husband were crew on Eraserhead.
- Love her but she has shown up in some shit over the years. She wisely stayed away from the "Carrie" sequel in the 90s but then played a supporting part in "The Ring 2." What?? And she probably did "Trading Mom" for her kids but it''s pretty awful, a low-budget non-charming fantasy. But her success rate is impressive.\
\
About her nose - if you can find her old high school yearbook picture you can see her original, bulbous nose. She must have been one of the last actresses to get an Old Hollywood nosejob. She has that same carved-down "pixie" nose that Ann Miller, Nanette Fabray, Gale Storm, and many other actresses from that era had. Actually, Michelle Pfeiffer has the same nose but it works better on her.
- Sissy Spacek''s old schnoz!
http://www.texasmonthly.com/cms/dispImage.php?id=2765
- Thanks, r42! That''s the exact picture I was looking for but couldn''t find. I figured SS had them scrubbed from google somehow.
r41
- Isn''t she related to Rip Torn? Though I''m not certain of the exact nature of the relationship.
- That cannot be Sissy in that link.%0D\
%0D
- That homecoming mum at r42 is pure-d Texas!
- Rip Torn is her first cousin, I believe.\
\
R40, I hadn''t heard they''d divorced, so can''t verify. Haven''t seen either one of them in the past year, but the last time I did, they seemed very happy.\
\
David Lynch and Jack Fisk have been best friends since they were kids. I believe that Lynch was married to Jack''s sister. I was told by our local "yuppie trashman" that when they split up, she threw a ton of Lynch''s stuff in the trash. (This is an area of country estates, not the city, and so you have to hire a private contractor to haul trash away.) The trash guy, who was a real film fiend and Lynch fan, said that the cans were overflowing with tapes, memorabilia, etc, which he naturally kept.
- I saw TV film with her and David Strathairn (can''t recall the title) where he''s a Vietnam Vet in jail for killing a cop and she''s his old high school GF who''s now married.%0D\
%0D\
It''s sounds treacly, and there''s some unbelieveable stuff near the end, but those two actors are wonderful together.
- Both Spacek and Walken tried to rescue "Blast From the Past." While promoting the film she said Walken was an old friend of hers and she took the role because she wanted to work with him.%0D\
%0D\
I love the scene in CMD when the old clothes washer on the porch stops and, while picking at her guitar , she gets up, kicks it, and it starts again.

- Sissy Spacek is a great actress. Totally earned that 1980 Oscar for [italic]Coal Miner''s Daughter[/italic]. Wanted her to win for 2001''s [italic]In the Bedroom[/italic]. %0D\
%0D\
%0D\
Spacek has had six Oscar nominations over a 25-year period (all in best actress): 1976''s [italic]Carrie[/italic]; 1980; 1982''s [italic]Missing[/italic]; 1984''s [italic]The River[/italic]; 1986''s [italic]Crimes of the Heart[/italic]; 2001.%0D\
%0D\
I also loved her pure performances in 1973''s [italic]Badlands[/italic] and 1977''s [italic]3 Women[/italic] -- two others that had the potential for nominations.%0D\
%0D\
A good voice too: In her singing as Loretta Lynn; in her speaking voice (check her out in the 2007 Hallmark Hall of Fame [italic]Pictures of Hollis Woods[/italic]).%0D\

- When is Barefoot Stories coming out? I have been waiting for six months!
Carol Goeser
- Sissy and her husband are still married
- Went to her NY book signing. The book is now called "My Extraordinary Ordinary Life". She is still married and her daughter Schuyler Fisk was there. She seemed genuinely surprised so many people showed up.
- Cool picture:

- Should have played the daughter in The Glass Menagerie in her youth.
- "That cannot be Sissy in that link."
That's her, alright. Her nosejob made her completely unrecognizable, but not in a good way. It was a terrible nosejob.
She's a very good actress, has had a long and successful marriage and career and has never gotten any bad publicity that I know of. She seems very well-adjusted and down to earth. She's one of the few actresses I know like that. She's very un-Hollywood.
- [quote]Should have played the daughter in The Glass Menagerie in her youth.
Oh, yes. Wouldn't Sissy have been a marvelous Laura Wingfield?
- R1, I worked for her manager for awhile in the 90s. Spacek caused many problems for film productions by deciding last minute she wasn't interested after all - even after costume fittings, etc. After you pull that crap a few times, people stop calling.
- [quote]That's her, alright. Her nosejob made her completely unrecognizable, but not in a good way. It was a terrible nosejob.
You're an idiot, she was and is absolutely lovely.

- [quote]You're an idiot, she was and is absolutely lovely.
No dear, you're the idiot. You would have to be blind not to think that her nose job wasn't terrible.
- Sissy would be an excellent Amanda Wingfield.
- How was her book? Anyone read it?
- I love her presence.
- Emmylou Harris has the same nose job. Does anyone have a photo of her original nose?
- Scandalous Sissy!
http://www.youtube.com/watch%3Fv%3DbRfiS2Eymmc
- She is grace
- My dad used to call her "Sissy Spaceship", LOL.
Here's one of Sissy's first singing attempts:
http://www.youtube.com/watch%3Fv%3DsfeQ3wuvXn0
- She was great in Carrie, Badlands, and 3 Women!
- 'In The Bedroom' too! Nice slap!
http://www.youtube.com/watch%3Fv%3DbZq6Gv7rP0w
- She was also superb in 'The Straight Story', 'Nine Lives', 'The Grass Harp', 'Crimes of The Heart','Missing', 'The Long Walk Home', 'Affliction','A Home at The End of the World'
Her presence gave beauty and potential to the movies she played in.
I still like seeing her in movies. She is excellent, really!
- I always thought she was limited by her southern accent, like Holly Hunter. Did she ever attempt anything that wasn't so...folksy?
- Fantastic actress and great person.
But skip her biography. It is BORING.
Biographies usually have juicy, scandalous details.
But she is such a normal, nice person, the bio is boring.
- You can understand how beautiful is Sissy just from a photo. You must see her in her movies and in person to see how beautiful she is in and out.
She is really distinctive. I love her!
- *you can't

- A true actress, a true woman, a devoted wife, a humble person, and i suspect a deep heart and soul.

- She is so giving in her performances, even when she plays a supporting role, you feel so good watching her. She fills the screen with her energy.
- Sissy you are a rare diamond!
