After seeing Blue Valentine, I finally ''get'' him. I never really thought he was particularly handsome, and never saw his movies other than The Notebook, which I hated.\ \ But he absolutely blew me away in Blue Valentine. He was dirty, sexy, vulnerable, and had LOADS of charisma, even when his character was fat, ugly and balding. Definitely somebody that lights up more on screen than he does in photographs.\ \ He''s also exudes a raw sex appeal and a manliness than a lot of popular leading men in Hollywood right now (think Taylor Lautner, Justin Timberlake, Robert Pattinson, Andrew Garfield) lack.\ \ God damn, the man is sexy and talented. And with the buzz building for BV, I think he could be a dark horse against Firth.

• Saw Blue Valentine yesterday and feel exactly the same as OP. I never followed Gosling''s career but he is a fantastic actor - same for Michelle Williams. Both seem more interested in doing challenging and interesting roles in smaller films instead of becoming movie stars.

• How funny...true story here not long ago I was a a deli and I actually found myself staring at this incredibly sexy guy who turned out to be Ryan Gosling. He was so nice to everyone in the cast and crew. He would take the time to chat and joke around with crew members in between takes. He's very down to earth.

• I sympathized with Michelle's character. Dean was a lazy, alcoholic man child. Even with Ryan Gosling's face, I would have asked for a divorce too. He was a part time painter, full time drunk and thought raising their daughter meant laying around and playing games with food. He wasn't contributing anything, he didn't want to change, he didn't want to grow up. At a certain point you have to give up on a person like that.

• He's not a bad actor by any means, but he's not as good as his hype. He's just a pretty good actor, not great. His movies tend to get very overhyped by critics. • I saw "Blue Valentine". It's a good movie, but very depressing and intense. There's only one "hot" sex scene in it that I remember: Gosling's character is undressing William's character and ends up eating her out. That's at the beginning of their relationship. After six years of marriage they go to a tacky "theme" hotel in an effort to rekindle their long gone passion, and it's a disaster. The sex scenes there are excruciating to watch: he trying to pleasure her and it's obvious she has no sexual attraction to him at all anymore. There's also a scene near the beginning of the movie where William's incredible jerk of a boyfriend (this is before she takes up with Gosling) is fucking her from behind. That too, is excruciating to watch: no love, no feeling, nothing but a cock going in and out.

• "Blue Valentine" is one of the best movies about the beginning and end of a relationship. It's so REAL. You totally understand why they fell in love and you totally understand why their relationship goes to hell. The sex scenes in the hotel are excruciating but hyou can't look away; he's doing his best to pleasure her but her sexual feelings for him are completely dead. I thought both Williams and Gosling should have been nominated for Oscars for it.
