Still about 40% too high.

Wait until that guilty verdict comes down, that'll do wonders for his standing. I read today that the trial should wrap up much sooner than anticipated.

As you stare into the vacuum of his eyes
And ask him do you want to make a deal?

R21, Trump is despised by most of the Western world and by most of America's allies, as R22 just stated. Not only is he disliked in the UK (well-documented in polls that show Obama is preferred by Brits over Trump), but he is also hated in Canada. 70% of Canadians said they prefer Biden to Trump in a recent Nanos poll.

What a load of absolute fucking garbage R21. Dump is loathed planetwide except by people like Putin/Russia and other desperate dictators.
We hate him in Australia too R23. Dump's presidency did a lot of damage to our relationship with the US. Another Dump presidency will be disastrous and allies will move forward with plans to strengthen ties and cooperation with allies other than the US. Australia will cancel the AUKUS partnership and move in a different direction of strengthening relationships in the pacific and Oceania area. Another Dump presidency will signal the proper beginning of the end for a waning power.
Basically Australians think that with Dump's first presidency - Americans didn't know what he would be like so we'll give you the benefit of the doubt. But if he gets re-elected again this year when you know what he's like and what he will do, well, then that's who Americans really are and what America really wants and this time we'll believe you. Immeasurable damage.

Regarding the swing state polls @R5: I think you have to bear in mind that Trump's constituents are motivated and die-hard; their numbers don't change. There's an angry faction (of mostly old white Christian straight men who feel that "their" country is slipping away) that truly and honestly believe that Trump is going to somehow save them from the future. Arizona is the best example of this phenomenon. They truly don't care that he's a mafia don of essentially a crime family. They don't care that he crashed the worldwide economy when he did nothing to mitigate Covid. What they care about is that the US is becoming more progressive and accepting, which they interpret as turning away from white supremacy (although they don't call it that).
But then you have to look at Biden's voters who are less committed to him because, as usual, the media has beat him up relentlessly since he saved the world from Covid's ravages. He's old. He's feeble, He has verbal ticks and stutters. And, of course, we now have the chlldren running their mouths over a people that no one wants on a strip of land that they couldn't have placed on a map 8 months ago (odd how they were calling it an open air prison when one side was contained by an Arab state that won't let them in even in these direst of circumstances, and a sea on one side that you'd think if the Palestinian were welcome anywhere in the Arab world would not be difficult to sail up a few ocean liners and begin evacuations, but that's just me).
The good news is that, as the OP posits, the trials are having an effect, and poll after poll has shown that the people who are going to decide this race say that they will not vote for a convicted felon. What OP points out is that this is already having an effect as the media is forced to cover his trial and expose Trump's tantrums for even his supporters to see. It's not a great look. Falling asleep in the middle of this trial is what I think has caught swing voters' attention. You'd think he would be wired from the gravitas of the proceeding, if not the Adderall and whatever other stims he's taking. And it's not like we're talking about long stretches of arcane testimony; they seem to take a break about every hour and a half and the substance of the proceedings is riveting.
Now, where it gets really interesting is when you look at the swing states, the GOP's apparatus is in a shambles and the state parties are broke. They're fighting with each other and still putting up the most extreme candidates they can find. They have no ground game anywhere. And when you think that the national party apparatus will swoop in, it is spending all of the donations they are collecting on Trump's legal fees, they dumped all of the experienced (and in particular, the GOTV specialists) organizers, and moved the party HQ to Maga-Lardo to be staffed by partisan flunkies and lead by the wife of the stupid(er) son.
We're six months out and there's a lot that can happen. I am not counting my chickens here; it is still very possible that Trump can win. But most people are not paying attention to the race (and are frankly burnt out on the whole thing; look at the numbers who say "this is the best we can do? Two old men?"). The polling has been unreliable, underscored by the fact that Democrats have won every special election and outperformed the Republicans in the midterms even though the polling showed it much differently, due in large part to the SCOTUS taking away women's right to control their own bodies. And this polling showing Biden up and Trump down now that the numbers are beginning to take shape as the country realizes the stakes in this election is a good sign.

Hey geniuses- the pills are showing Joe's favorability among "Likely Voters" ( I e. Those that actually drag themselves to voting sites and not just lighting up another bong). Totally different set of criteria.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | May 7, 2024 7:41 PM |
In the past three presidential elections, Pew Research Center surveys conducted in September and October found little difference between election estimates based on all registered voters and those we identified as most likely to vote. On the eve of the election, the surveys found a much wider difference. This pattern suggests that determining who is a likely voter gets more accurate as Election Day nears.
