DL, please help me figure out a movie where a woman kills herself
Picture it. It's the 1990s and I see a movie on Lifetime (I think) where a melancholy woman eats breakfast by herself in her large house, goes upstairs, and then shoots herself with a large shotgun she got from the cabinet.
I've been trying to figure out what the title of this movie was for years. I've tried Reddit's Tip of My Tongue forum and they weren't much help either. I figured since it was probably a 90s chick flick, that someone on DL might actually know what it was.

Could it have been an episode of a show or something?

It's possible r1 but I remember it being either a feature film being aired or either a TV movie. However, it's been so long I don't want to say for certain.

The start of Desperate Housewives?

I remember vividly that she leans over the shotgun to shoot herself. As a kid, I didn't know one could shoot oneself in that manner.

r3 No, I've seen every episode of Desperate Housewives and that was 2004. This had to be 1996-2000.

“My Forgotten Love” starring Helen Lawson.

Do you remember any other details besides that one scene?
by Anonymous | reply 8 | May 4, 2024 12:37 AM

r8 that scene was the last scene before the credits I believe.
Also, this may have been another movie but I vaguely remember a scene where a woman tries to stab herself in a kitchen and her sister or friend rescues her.

The internet can be your friend, OP.
Take a look at this list and see if anything sound familiar. You can then click on each title to get detail descriptions.

IMDB also has a long list of Lifetime movies with lots of details about each movie.

It just had to be "The First Time I Died, The Last Time I Cried" starring Meredith Baxter, who shines in her powerful portrayal of a woman on the edge.

R13 I've already been through that list twice and couldn't find it.

A Dead Mom for Christmas. Starring Olivia Newton-John.

It was a commercial for Folger's Coffee:
"Peter the College Student Comes Home Early for Christmas Again, and this Time HE Gets the Surprise!"

Was it definitely the '90s or is there any chance it was the early aughts? Lifetime played a lot of content that originally aired elsewhere, which complicates the search if it was a TV movie.

Was it Vanessa Redgrave killing herself in Deep Impact?

Don’t worry, OP history always repeats itself. This will probably be the first scene of “Brittney Spears: Shattered Dreams Y’all” in 2027

I remember that movie. I believe the theme song went something like...

Are you sure the woman wasn’t a South Dakota Gov. dragging a wirehair pointer down to a gravel pit and shooting it with a shotgun? Because I know that scenario…

Don't leave us hanging, OP. Did you find the title?

I don’t think it’s this but Shattered Innocence with Melinda Dillon does have a shotgun suicide. It’s from 1988 but used to air regularly on Lifetime in the 90s but the rest of your details don’t match.

Are you sure it was on Lifetime, op?
There's a French film from the 70s, "Jeanne Dielman, 23 quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles", that ends with a 10+ minute static shot of the heroine sitting at her dining table. I was ready to shoot MYSELF after sitting through that.

r29 No, I never did find it. I've been through the IMDB lists for Lifetime movies countless times now and even pulled up the full movies on YouTube with something that sounded similar.
Thanks r30 but that's not it either. Looks interesting though.
I've just decided that I'll probably never find the title or see this film again along with a few other tv movies I saw way back when.

R34: i'm with you! The bathtub scene alone seemed to take two hours! I wonder how many viewers died while watching that movie. Seriously.
That being said, "Jeanne Dielman" is considered to be one of the greatest films ever made. Go figure.
Maybe it deserves a DL thread of its own.

Again from the 80s, there is a scene in Sidney Sheldon's If Tomorrow Comes where the mother kills herself with a handgun after being set up by a crime syndicate. There is no breakfast but it's a melancholic scene.

I watched a Joan Crawford film where her character’s catty cruelty provoked a mentally fragile woman to hang herself in the stables! When Joan discovers what she’s done, she smears her vanity mirror in cold cream!

Was it the Jennifer O'Neill story? She shot herself. I swear I saw a TV movie where she portrayed herself and the shooting incident but I can't find it now.

There was some cheery movie called Good night Mother, with Sissy Spacek. Did you know that Dr. Seuss’ first wife, killed herself after a long marriage. She is responsible for his success, became very ill, wrote this great letter of guilt, and killed herself. He then quickly marrried her best friend, much younger, and then lived happily ever after. The cat in the hat, my ass. Also, he was extremely prejudice against Japanese Americans.
Sorry for hijacking’s thread. Y’all probably know all this, but it was a surprise to me.

It’s interesting how my mind remembered that scene viewing the film as an 8 year old. I knew it was melancholy but not to the extent I remembered. Also, I swear she was eating porridge!

I may be messing up details but the two movies that come to mind are "Carrington" with Emma Thompson and "The Go Between" with Alan Bates and Julie Christie. Both involve people bending over shotguns. I think. But it's been a long time since I've seen either film.
