Will our Glenn be lucky on her ninth try and nab that little gold man?
...uh huh.

I would be surprised if this happens now. With all of the excitement around the Nicole Scherzinger revival coming to Broadway (I wasn't crazy about it in London) and ALW throwing everything at it in terms of publicity, a proshot of that seems more likely

by Anonymous | reply 4 | May 3, 2024 1:06 AM |
Norma is only 50 years old. Glenn is at least twice that.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | May 3, 2024 1:08 AM |
Oh Glenn. You are 77. Lay off the reefer. No one is green lighting this project.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | May 3, 2024 1:09 AM |
She's way too old to play the part now.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | May 3, 2024 1:10 AM |
Damn, 77 and still jockeying for a pointless statue.

by Anonymous | reply 10 | May 3, 2024 1:13 AM |
Having an actress this old playing Norma makes no sense!
Norma's tragedy is that she's been put out to pasture while still relatively young! She's been out of movies for some years when we meet her at age fifty. That is the poignancy of her dilemma.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | May 3, 2024 1:14 AM |
I wonder if ALW is humoring her in hopes she will die and her contract for exclusive movie rights will be over.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | May 3, 2024 1:15 AM |
Um, really? Bless her heart ♥
by Anonymous | reply 13 | May 3, 2024 1:16 AM |
She’ll be the first actress that actually appeared in silent pictures.
For double fun, they can have a theater playing one of her silent movies and they do a closeup on the organist and it’s the Phantom of the Opera.

David Fincher should direct.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | May 3, 2024 2:51 AM |
I don't think Glenn is too old. Norma was 50 in the 1950 movie. They would need to adjust that age for modern audiences to buy that she's completely washed-up and forgotten. 77 is a good age for that character. I hope it works out.

R26 you're forgetting Glenn came *this close* to an Oscar for The Wife just a few years ago, where she gets finger-banged in the opening 5 minutes!
by Anonymous | reply 35 | May 4, 2024 8:08 AM |
She is too old. Norma is 50. 50 in 1950 is not 80 in 2024. 50 year old women in 1950 such as Norma were in shape and sexually viable. Also they are often going through menopause, which is a shading to Norma's situation and her sexual and emotional gambits around romantic love.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | May 4, 2024 8:15 AM |
Wait, Norma looked ancient in the film. Anyone can play that character at any age as long as they’re over 50.

by Anonymous | reply 42 | May 4, 2024 2:07 PM |
"A 50-year old women in 1950 such as Norma were in shape and sexually viable."
Wrong. 50 in 1950 meant white hair, wrinkles and sitting on a park bench feeding the pigeons. Your life was over.

Do they give out Oscars to [bold]basic[/bold]cable actresses?
by Anonymous | reply 44 | May 4, 2024 3:19 PM |
I thought they had a director a few years ago ? It was some guy who was known for directing a Broadway musical (and everyone questioned what he knew about directing a big-screen movie musical).
What everyone seems to forget is that with today's cinematography and technological advancements, an 80 year old Close can look 50 on screen. AI can do the trick. (Same for Barbra and "Gypsy").
by Anonymous | reply 45 | May 4, 2024 3:28 PM |
Who are they going to hire to sweeten Glenn’s vocals?

That reminds me of when fiftysomething Glenn CLose played twentysomething Nellie Forbush in the TV remake of SOUTH PACIFIC in the early 2000s.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | May 4, 2024 3:54 PM |
If 41 year old Streisand could play a 20-something year old male in 'Yentl' back in 1983, then nothing's impossible.
Wait, Norma looked ancient in the film. Anyone can play that character at any age as long as they’re over 50.
Have you guys seen the movie? Norma did not look ancient.
Throughout her life, Gloria took very good care of herself, ate well and avoided the sun and such, so her face is line-free in SB.
One of the complaints about the film is that 50-year-old Gloria Swanson looks younger than her age, while 31-year-old William Holden, a drunkard, looks older than his age, so they look around the same age instead of a cougar/gigolo situation.
One of the complaints about the film is that 50-year-old Gloria Swanson looks younger than her age
I've been a fan of this movie forever, and not once have I ever heard such a complaint. I've heard Holden looked older than early 30s, but never Swanson looking younger than 50.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | May 4, 2024 4:11 PM |
Poor Glennie, can’t take on a project without being compared to Hollywood legend Gloria Swanson.
Gloria didn’t look her age because she was taking all that Kennedy cock.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | May 4, 2024 4:17 PM |
The story is mildewed and corny. It won't work unless the setting remains in 1950. To be a popular box office hit they'd have to hire some popular young actors who can sing.
The oldest Millennials are already 44.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | May 4, 2024 4:24 PM |
This will go one of two ways: 1) Glenn will get the "Mame" treatment and get filtered and CGI'ed to appropriate age, or 2) she'll get the "Cheri" treatment and be told she's too old for this and be asked to step down in exchange for an Exective Producer credit.
by Anonymous | reply 56 | May 4, 2024 4:26 PM |
Glenn will lose the role to Melissa McCarthy (now that she has lost all that weight thanks to Ozempic), just like Barbra lost 'Gypsy' to McCarthy (though Amy Sherman Palladino hasn't moved forward, yet).
by Anonymous | reply 57 | May 4, 2024 4:30 PM |
R53 you don't know what you're talking about.
by Anonymous | reply 58 | May 4, 2024 5:10 PM |
I think it’s rich that Glenn is still making movies while Meryl is doing a second rate supporting role on a Steve Martin sitcom.

Adele *is* Norma Desmond.
by Anonymous | reply 62 | May 4, 2024 7:51 PM |
The main point of casting for the Norma role should be that the actress can run up and down stairs without getting winded. They can’t go through millions of feet of film and erase all that gasping. If they hire Glenn, they’ll have to equip Norma with a silver inhaler and pretend she’s asthmatic.
No more wars to fight (hits the inhaler)
White flags fly (hits the inhaler) tonight

by Anonymous | reply 65 | May 5, 2024 7:31 AM |
R59, Meryl is one of the most successful actresses of all time -- she has 3 Oscars and a record number of nominations. Unlike Glenn, she can choose to do whatever she wants because she has already made it big. Glenn is the one who is desperate.

Fuck Glenn Close and fuck Judy Holliday, too!
by Anonymous | reply 67 | May 5, 2024 9:18 AM |
I just don't think Gloria was robbed in 1950. Maybe it's because her performance has been imitated and parodied in the years since, but she is quite campy at times as Norma. And that voice!
Bette definitely should have won IMO for playing the iconic Margo Channing.
by Anonymous | reply 69 | May 5, 2024 1:05 PM |
Gloria did indeed look beyond ancient. 50 year olds back then looked like 60+ do now.
by Anonymous | reply 70 | May 5, 2024 1:17 PM |
R69, I think the campy aspect is meant to be part of Norma's character. She's supposed to be an overly-dramatic washed-up star from the silent film days. Gloria brought exactly the right quality to the role and that's why it's so famous. She should have won the Oscar for it instead of Judy Holliday, the latter of whom is forgotten today.
