This idea started on the Internet after his death and now people just run with it. It’s like when Marilyn Monroe died and everyone suddenly began proclaiming that she was a comedic genius. Norm would get dead silence when he did Weekend Update on SNL because he was so unfunny. I’m not saying he never came up with a funny line, but people who keep spouting this nonsense never even saw him perform. It’s ridiculous. It’s like when people say, “People forget that Lindsay Lohan is actually a fantastic actress.” No she wasn’t. lol
Why does everyone act like Norm MacDonald was some great comedian now?
by Anonymous | reply 63 | May 5, 2024 4:51 AM |
OP, you don’t understand Norm. He did jokes HE liked and could care less what the audience thought. He was very intelligent, but revelled in playing dumb.
He was brilliant, in my opinion, but to each their own.

"could care less"
Oh, dear r1
by Anonymous | reply 2 | April 30, 2024 11:12 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 3 | April 30, 2024 11:13 PM |
Not funny.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | April 30, 2024 11:15 PM |
His last Netflix special actually made me laugh out loud, which is rare for me. I guess you have to be from a certain generation with a certain sense of humor.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | April 30, 2024 11:25 PM |
Love everything about this. But Norm is not “pop” comedy. He’s harder to understand for some audiences.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | April 30, 2024 11:27 PM |
His timing was perfection.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | April 30, 2024 11:28 PM |
I kinda feel your pain, OP. I guffawed at the "moth" joke above and I love Norm's deadpan fuck-you style of humor. But I think we all have some revered comic that just leaves us ice cold. For me: Bill Hicks. Nothing he ever said made me laugh and people treat him like some deep philosopher, but I've gotten more insights from fortune cookies.
Dying prematurely does raise a comic's stock in the public's mind, no doubt about it.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | April 30, 2024 11:39 PM |
I thought he had a lot of good punchlines on SNL but those audiences were duds. They’d laugh at Chris Farley screaming in the place of actual comedy but not at MacDonalld.

The more annoying thing is how people act like he wrote his stuff on Weekend Update, when actually it was written for him by Jim Downey
by Anonymous | reply 11 | April 30, 2024 11:57 PM |
I think today’s 11-14 year old boys think Norm was edgy

I remember finding MacDonald's "Weekend Update"s dreadful -- an improvement on predecessor Kevin Nealon (whose discomfort was painful), I guess, but not much of one. Then came Colin Quinn.
In other words, the decade or so between Dennis Miller's departure and the revitalizing provided by Tina Fey and Jimmy Fallon was grim. Or so it seemed to me at the time.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | May 1, 2024 1:44 AM |
He was grabby with waitresses and female comedians. He thought it was funny to stick his hands down their pants. Hilarious right?!
by Anonymous | reply 17 | May 1, 2024 1:49 AM |
I laughed but something about him made me uncomfortable .
by Anonymous | reply 19 | May 1, 2024 2:16 AM |
He was a handsome younger man.

by Anonymous | reply 22 | May 1, 2024 4:58 AM |
What do you mean by now? He was always widely considered the best Weekend Update host. He has been an iconic figure to other comedians for a long time, well before his death. You're just not aware of how he was actually perceived all along.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | May 1, 2024 5:09 AM |
I remember seeing a comedy special with him that I thought was hilarious.
Never watched him on SNL because I hate SNL with the intensity of a thousand suns.
His politics were evidently abhorrent.
He's dead, so I'm not that concerned.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | May 1, 2024 5:17 AM |
Never found him funny. Never understood why other people did.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | May 1, 2024 6:07 AM |
I'd no idea who he was but really liked him on The Middle.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | May 1, 2024 8:12 AM |
Fuck Norm MacDonald. Unfunny cunt.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | May 1, 2024 8:20 AM |
Sorry, OP, R23 is right. Norm was beloved well before his death -- especially by fellow comedians. I'm 44. I didn't really 'get' Norm when I was in my 20s and early 30s, but his incredibly dry, wicked sense of humor really clicked with me the older I got. Despite his very dry delivery, he was, reportedly, a lovely guy. His final Letterman appearance was surprisingly moving.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | May 1, 2024 8:52 AM |
Death is what happens to comedians who turn MAGA.
BYE, bitch. Have fun in hell.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | May 1, 2024 9:01 AM |
Norm was a Trump supporter?? Receipts, please.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | May 1, 2024 11:17 AM |
I don’t have any receipts but he definitely stood up for trump in some random interview not too long before he died. He was talking about the so-called “trump derangement syndrome.”
by Anonymous | reply 32 | May 1, 2024 12:21 PM |
He was never funny.
I'll never forget how badly his '98 movie, Dirty Work, bombed. That musta stung.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | May 1, 2024 12:31 PM |
Loved his voice work as Pigeon on Mike Tyson Mysteries.
He was a riot on an old Conan ep, with Courtney Thorne Smith, defending her co-star Carrot Top. Even Courtney burst out laughing at the absurdity of the plot of the film she did with CT.

He absolutely was not.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | May 1, 2024 12:53 PM |
He was a rightwing cunt, chose to be fired instead of stopping the biased jokes against OJ Simpson; said that he was glad that Me Too was toned down and discredited and said that Trump was not such a bad guy.
Fuck him and the bunch of male whites praising him. Typical boomer.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | May 1, 2024 1:14 PM |
Got to go with OP. Norm MacDonald had nothing. He was a humorless evil prick and bully
by Anonymous | reply 37 | May 1, 2024 1:24 PM |
I thought he was hilarious as Burt Reynolds on Celebrity Jeopardy.
Can't remember who played Sean Connery.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | May 1, 2024 1:41 PM |
His OJ jokes were very funny. The head of NBC at the time was a friend of OJ's and that's why Norm got fired.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | May 1, 2024 2:14 PM |
R38, Darrell Hammond.

R36 Link or STFU
by Anonymous | reply 41 | May 1, 2024 3:37 PM |
R36 Biased jokes about OJ? What a fucking misogynistic, murder loving piece of shit.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | May 1, 2024 5:52 PM |

[quote]After the announcement that Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie Presley planned to divorce, Macdonald joked about their irreconcilable differences on Weekend Update. "According to friends, the two were never a good match. She's more of a stay-at-home type, and he's more of a homosexual pedophile."
😂

They are all over Reddit clucking that old Norm was ahead of his time. They’re so sad they wereb5 alive during his heyday but they watch him on YouTube and decry boomers who didn’t get him because they are lead poisoned.

r51 11-14yo boys aren't on Reddit.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | May 1, 2024 10:38 PM |
He's a brilliant comedian because he died. Though I will admit I laughed at the moth joke.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | May 1, 2024 10:44 PM |
Norm was complicated. He had right wing boomer politics, apparently his son is gay, and his jokes were often uniquely focused on mocking homophobia. He was an intelligent person, most likely on the autistic spectrum with an obsession with the mathematics of gambling. He lost a lot of money gambling, as well as developing a Xanax dependency. Also very interesting how he refused to tell anyone about his cancer. That is a fascinating response to a terminal illness
by Anonymous | reply 54 | May 1, 2024 10:58 PM |
He was not the least bit intelligent. Stop it R54.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | May 2, 2024 5:29 AM |
He called out Michael Jackson for being a kid fucker and OJ Simpson for being a murderer. Good for him. That old NBC Chairman fuck who is probably dead now fired him for that. Awful.

Not terribly fascinating darling. That's how it's done in Canada and the Norhteast

R43 It’s pretty common for people to defend their friends; less common when you know you’ll be vilified for it.

Wow. It took 54 posts to suggest that he was autistic.

He and Darrell Hammond are rightwing pricks. SNL produces a lot of rightwing assholes - Victoria Jackson, Dennis Miller, Rob Schneider, Jim Breuer, Colin Quinn, Jim Downey, Joe Piscopo.
by Anonymous | reply 60 | May 5, 2024 1:05 AM |
Ugh Victoria Jackson. She was terrible on the show and is now an even bigger idiot.
Plus, f Joe Piscopo. Phil Hartman did a better Sinatra…and was better looking.
