Celebrities For Nixon (& other little known facts)

I thought this was an interesting read. Lots of little known right wing celebs are talked about here including John Ritter's father country singer Tex Ritter & basketball star Wilt Chamberlain.

I heard so many times that the religious right had started in the 70s but it seems like rev. Billy Graham ushered it in with endorsing Nixon for Prez in the late 60s (I always thought he was neutral when it came to political endorsements).

Connie Francis has now endorsed both Nixon & Trump for the White House during her lifetime due to being concerned about America's image in the 1960s & "moral order".

Has she ever distanced herself from either of these two losers?

Discuss.

R1 Are you saying Mary Tyler Moore supported Nixon at one point?

This might have been the beginning of the descent for Charlton Heston. He had marched for civil rights. Then he became a Democrat for Nixon.

Connie stated that she regretted backing Nixon and doing his campaign song for the reason that he did not end the war quickly as he promised. She had a falling out with Reagan due to his lack of concern over the AIDS epidemic, and also because he placed her at the head of the Victims Rights and he did hardly anything. She had to pair up with a police commission in Florida (Broward Co.) to get the job done, investing her own money. to pass The Victims Rights Laws. She has never backed Trump, and she previously backed Obama, although she later stated that she was disappointed with him at the end. As a result of all of this, she now stays out of politics. She has never spoken a word about Trump. He did engage her for his casinos in AC and LV in the 1990s , and I was present when he and Marla were in the audience at Ballys Grand for her performance.

Bennett Cerf was a celebrity for Nixon

R6 Thanks for posting that. I can't make out too many of the celebs as the quality is poor & they cut away so much. I see Glen C. & MYT & Nixon, wifey & Agnew.

Can someone name some of the celebs there4 at certain time stamps? I see a black couple & an Asian woman but don't know who they are.

Who is the drag queen at 6:55 for instance?

I never knew Olivia N-J was a repub let alone a Nixon one. Was she there at this party? I didn't see her.

Ed Asner always said in recent era interviews that we (the left) lost MYM to the right wing but based on this video/endorsement she was a card carrying repub long before any Fox News era switcheroo. I recall she once said that women shouldn't work outside the home while having kids (being critical of 60s/70s feminism) & now it makes sense since she is a repub ala Phyllis S. (was the Phyllis character on MYM named after the Eagle Forum gal?).

I read the accompanying article and this thread an I've lost a bit of respect for these celebrities, finding out that they were Republicans.

R7 as much as I adore Bennett Cerf, he was so wealthy and had no idea who or what the average American was in 1968. Of course, he'd vote for Nixon.

Isn't Olivia NJ an Aussie? What was she doing endorsing a candidate from another nation?
