Back in the mid-80s, PLAYGIRL tried to change their concept by photographing men in their underwear - no nudes. They claimed that their female readers were turned off by male nudity and erections, and found men more sexy when they are covered up. They couldn't have been more wrong.

What they were most wrong with was believing that women made up their audience. They ignored the fact that it was gay men who were subscribing and buying OTC. We gay men were turned off by the 'covered up' models, and wanted to see erect dicks. Their 'experiment' cost them money - gay men canceled their subscriptions and left the magazine on the shelves. Their revenue dropped considerably. I believe in 12 months they scrapped their plans and brought back the nudity.

If they're trying this same experiment now, this magazine will fold within months. Gay guys don't want this.

I think recruiting reality stars would be more effective to getting full-frontal shoots. Those guys like being recognized, they tend to be shirtless a lot, and they don't shy away from the risque. I remember Dr. Mick Trimming losing weight on Survivor, and they pixelated his bush, which was present above his waistband for the last weeks of the season. He didn't seem to mind it was visible.

I think of former contestants on Survivor, the Amazing Race, Big Brother, the Challenge, American Ninja Warrior, Love Island and other shows and I believe they could have several full-frontal features in the magazine.

I've heard Playgirl is a shadow of its former self. It seems that way. I have no investment in this, because I stopped watching "Days" in the 1990s.

But as a casual observer not actually expecting to see any part of these guys: I love the Hanes product placement. Calvin Klein as the standard for these shoots was boring twenty years ago. I'm more of a Hanes man. It's a small difference that makes a big difference. Like...more nudity would've improved this shoot.
